Good for you and thanks for supporting artists. It's usually other artists that support the arts. I have a very large painting everyone is always wanting to buy, the most I've been offered wouldn't cover the cost of the blank canvas. People are shocked when I tell them a price. It's very rare for anyone to actually be willing to pay the artist for their time. I would have to work for a dollar an hour or less to really sell any volume of work. Traditionally it's the gallery owners that make the money off of fine art.
@JesseBoren the way it works, but the gallery should be doing marketing and helping to get it to the people who can appreciate it.
@dalefvictor oh I know the argument, most artists don't buy into it so they are very resentful that they have to go through these middlemen to ever be seen. the internet is changing it some by giving some a way around it. I have never tried to sell my art like that so I'm not speaking for myself, just repeating what I hear. I remember how Chuck Connley was destroyed by the gallery owners because of his demands for a fair percentage. He is famous for screwing himself at every opportunity he was given so maybe he isn't such a good example but he has been very vocal about it.
@JesseBoren Galleries basically get about half. For that they are supposed to be successful enough to bring in customers who will buy what it is they have in their gallery. The other thing galleries do is make the price for what you do go up. Since you are (in a way) selling the item to the gallery for them to sell at a higher price this makes your work worth that price gotten in the gallery. After all why would you undercut yourself. If your not smart then one has to cut their piece so the selling price in the gallery is what you would charge a normal customer - this is not the way it is supposed to work. Being a artist is not easy, their is a saying about artists, "What do you call an artist without a girlfriend?" Homeless.
I tell people anyone can draw like I do, you just need 15,000 hours of practice first

@gigihein it didn't come easily so who knows you might be able to in half the time.
