A miniature blanket chest that I made a few years ago. The box is cherry, the lid birdseye maple and the feet are curly maple. I like to recreate antique pieces often using traditional handtools. I have made a few of these over the years.

Thank you. This is actually only about 14" wide. Blanket chests were common in America in the 18th and 19th centuries. During the same period miniature blanket chests similar to this one were made but far less common.

A very pretty piece!

Thank You. It is the only one I have made so far with mixed and contrasting wood.

I got to see my Dad do that type of detailing it takes some skill. It's a nice piece.

Those must be great memories. It does take some practice and patience. I taught myself by reading books about how to dovetail and other skills that were common before electricity. Do you know how your father learned his skills?

@wonderandlisten His Dad was a Master Carpenter - so he would have learned many of the skills from him - later he learned some skills from books as well. He really enjoyed woodworking his entire life - it was a real joy for him.

@wonderandlisten Oh and PBS - "This Old House" etc. back in the day... I imagine those shows are probably still running in some format or other. As there are plenty of folks interested.

@RavenCT The Woodwright's Shop was my favorite.
