Jean Stapleton, concerned that she would be typecast, called Norman Lear a few years into 'All in the Family' with her desire to leave the show. She suggested to Norman that he have Edith die off. Norman was dumbstruck. "But Norman, she's only fiction."
There was a long pause on the phone, a sniffle and then Norman spoke. "Not to me she isn't."

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.Looking at the overall character of the show I'd have to say that once the interplay between Archie and Edith began, any turn the show took away from that foundation would have ruined it. The tone created by the two of them was the entire show. Lear is one of the best in the industry and All in the Family was one of the best social commentary sitcoms ever made that touched on everything in the human repertoire. I have never been a TV person, but that was one show I could always find time for.
