This is not meant as a plug just a curiosity inquiry. So...I have been penning and posting a story for several months now in serial format using myself/ my own character as the protagonist. We learn in those early days of story creation to build characters we can relate to. In my story I found using myself as the main character I don't have to create anyone. Its all right there, my perception of myself. I wonder why I do not see this in other works. Just thinking out loud....
First Person POV is quite effective, but it doesn't hang in there all that well for anything but short stories and a few novellas. I enjoy the immediacy of the First Person and it lends itself to mind games and thought sequences that are sometimes a little weighty in Third and Second Person.
As for it being rare, I don't think that's the case. Quite often, authors will use First Person because it is the easiest or the best approach. It is much more common than you suggest.
I'm not sure why you haven't seen "this" in other works. I think I prefer first person narration. I've only had short stories, poetry and some literary critiques published, besides my column, "Writer's Block". But for my masters thesis I wrote and published a book using first person narration. If that's your style, that's your style. It's easy to get lost (lost in the best way possible!) in one's own story, fiction or not. Therefore, it feels more natural than being a neutral observer. I often found myself having good belly laughs, sometimes quiet little chuckles as the story took on it's own pace and meanings. So go with your gut and just do it! I would love to read it. PM me if you want to share it privately. Or give us weekly readings.
