What do you write about? I'm not talking genre. Positivity? Perseverance? Courage? Or weakness? Darkness? Submission?

I'm dark. I've always been dark and disturbed. I seem to get more so with time.

I have written almost everything that can be written. My short stories are O. Henry - ish. I love twisted and/or surprise endings. Dark? Sometimes. Upbeat? Sometimes. Humorous? Much of the time. I like strong, well rounded protagonists and antagonists. Pretty even handed in role sharing between male and female.

My novels tend to be complex and heroic in character.

It's interesting that your novels are always heroic Sometimes I can't tell the good guys from the bad guys in my own writing. And I'm always aiming for a surprise ending.

@Lysistrata -- That's a mite tough to explain. Heroic novels don't necessarily mean folks riding in on white stallions to save the day by defeating the wicked landlord. It's more a grandiose character throughout wherein it's hard to tell the difference between the good and bad. Everybody has their pluses and minuses.

The early stuff I wrote was about my friendship with a 'father' figure (since the genuine thing was at the bar getting drunk) - and that wound up being a novella covering four long years in my life. It was through this that I idenitified the stuff that interested me - kitchen sink dramas with humor - the British are good at this sort of stuff - Mike Leigh and Ken Loach in particular spring to mind in cinema. Like my life - a lot of darkness but there's always humor and a profoundly gentle strength under it all.

I think most dark authors can trace their roots to traumatic or neglected childhoods. I'm not familiar with either of the authors you mentioned, but I'll definitely look them up. Thanks!

@Lysistrata They are film makers sorry - Mike Leighs is well known in the UK for his films - David Thewlis as Johnny in Leigh's cult classic Naked (1993) is well worth watching - Bleak but pricelessly well written (the dialogue is outstanding) with standout acting. Loach is a left wing filmmaker also known for his humor and compassion - The Angels Share is very funny - If you in the US some of these film will come with subtitles due to the heavy accents.

Interesting. I don't watch a lot of video, but if you recommend a title, I'll look for it.

Darkness mostly. My wife's death is just starting to come out in poetry. I also write about travel, which can often be somewhat more upbeat. But not always.

Is the poetry helping?

@Lysistrata It's hard to say.

Wow... there are some sweet writers here. That's awesome. Do you share with the world or is it for your own private collection?

Positivity and perseverance, courage as well.

That's great! Do you write mostly poetry?

No. I have written an autobiographic novelette. You know the old “this is my story” up until 2013.

@MyLiege Have you published it, or are you planning to?

@Lysistrata I have not published it. I have to first answer the question as to whether it would be useful on the market, like what will my story bring to the table? Besides only a few close people have read it. No one “professional” to critique it.
