The cover image thing is significant. I found a couple of artworks that I thought would be perfect for my first novel. But copyright was an issue. So, I found a solution - I go to old cemeteries and take photos of stone angels. I own that image (noting that I never capture the name of the grave).
I need to mount more of a publicity campaign for my writing, so I share your dilemma. Hang in there.

@Lysistrata A friend of mine did some colouring; and, seriously, that angel is taller than me and I'm six foot. I had to sit down to get the shot.
I think the problem may lie not with your ads themselves, but with the fact that social media is so saturated with promotions for self-published material. I've belonged to a writers' group that began on AOL in the mid-90s, and I don't even click or comment on ads for their self-published work anymore. I do click through to read ads from publishing companies if the book they are advertising sounds interesting, but not on the majority of self-published things. Hope this helps give some perspective, maybe, although I have to admit I don't have a remedy to suggest off the top of my head.

Social media campaigns can be brutal. Just remember that the loudest voice is not often the most truthful.

@pixiedust After I posted this, a reader wrote me to tell me my new ad sickened him. 
@Lysistrata Oh dear. Well, I liked it better than I liked the purple one. It was the hammer bit I truly enjoyed and the model's hair.

@Lysistrata Nothing wrong at all with the purple one. Today I prefer the other one. Another day, the purple one might appeal more to my mood. My appreciation of art is very much influenced by mood and circumstance.
What are your expectations?

@Lysistrata -- Perhaps you're looking at the wrong people for these particular works. All creative endeavors are appreciated subjectively and what one group likes another will loathe. Spread out your reach to include more people.
