Healthcare is a right.100% fullstop. I am occasionally given abuse and encounter people who misuse their bodies to the point that they require extensive treatment, but they are treated nevertheless. We do not pick and choose, we do not judge, a prince gets the same treatment as a pauper. I have treated paedophiles, rapists, murderers. I have cared for an alcoholic who nightly broke windows so he could be arrested and have a good night's sleep. He would seizure on withdrawal so always ended up on A&E. I have treated a local celebrity who was so manic he was after giving away his millions to all the nursing staff and asked us all to marry him, when he recovered, his money was where he left it and he was single. I believe in a merit society, somethings we pay for because of the good of all, education, decent housing, good transport links and healthcare being those things. As a healthcare professional and an academic who teaches healthcare, we know that ultimately treating, even the least deserving of us is the mark of a decent society. #proudtoworkfortheNHS

Its scary but doable. I did virtually the same. Just breathe, throw everything to the universe and take each moment as it comes. I am 52 too and I feel completely different. Everything has changed for me. But with it has come a new found confidence. I don't have to rely on my hubby or children to stand behind, I am a person in my own right. You know for all my married life I lived believing my entire self worth was wrapped around him. Because he was sucessful then I was judged sucessful, because my children are all sucessful then so am I. The thing is, I am a sucess. I was a senior clinical practitioner now (changed jobs at 46), I am a university lecturer and doing a Phd. My current partner is a junior school teacher, he earns less than me and really hasn't got prospects. Thats alright though ya know...because I don't just have to be a teacher's gf...I can be 52 year old me. I don't have to be 'still sexy'...I am newly found 52 year old sexy. Its better...so much better. I am relishing every minute of my new existence because IT'S MINE. Please be happy and send a pm if you fancy a chat.

I only watch BBC news (no adverts) and the odd thing on Netflix. Its easily affordable here. When I was growing up we didn't have a TV for years as my Dad hated its influence. We were encouraged to read and read newspapers which he felt was more edifying. Obviously when I was a fulltime nurse working 13 hour shifts, there was no time for TV and most of what I watched was the bbc children's channels. Cbeebies...I still remember the songs. Later the kids watched Kerrang (rock music) and I was studying. Nowadays I watch news. I just never got the TV habit, prefering silence or ocassionally music. I would not pay for it as it isn't worth it.

I am interested in this but it appears to be culturally bound. So there is something about a religious experience not a particular religion. From studies I have read, some people's brains are equally ignited by other similarly strong emotional responses. I read an article about racism that suggested the areas of the brain of those most likely to experience strong racist views or strong non-racist views were the same. So the brain's of EDL (in UK) are the same as antifa. In way this makes sense. We are, in the end a product of our biology and our environment.

Funnily enough my son asked me this, he had just bought me a book. I said books are like cake to me, except they don't get you fat. My children make happy, in odd ways. They are adults but its such a joy to hear them sensibly discuss politics, philosophy etc. My job and working with students makes me happy, seeing them develop from entitled middle class brats to hard working professionals. Cooking and crafting make me happy. I suppose apart the children, my greatest joy comes from seeing an ex-patient in the supermarket, who maybe at one point was fighting for their life, not even recognise me. Just knowing I helped them have that moment is very special.

I would agree a TENS machine may help and to be honest simple paracetamol is adequate for all but the most serious pain. IV paracetamol particularly. (Hmmmm thats tylenol). I wouldn't be prescribing opiods post surgery for many reasons, not least of all sedation as you will need to be moving around as soon as possible. However I would not worry to greatly as regards addiction if your px is time limited. Maybe for one week. Work with your prescriber to find the best for you.
