What's your opinion of assisted suicide?
Amisja comments on Apr 29, 2018:
This can be very difficult as there are so many variables. Could I watch a loved one suffer? Probably not but then would I be like Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights and prefer a suffering Catherine to no Catherine? Analgesia and new technologies mean that even people in agony can find some relief. Technologies are meaning locked in people are on the verge of being able to communicate and I think within the next decade will be able to return to being actively involved in their life. The other issue is that despite every safeguard we can never be sure that granny isn't being ever so slightly influenced because the grandchild is financially over burdened and care of granny just adds to that. It is a slippery slope so I say I am against assisting someone to end their life. As a mental health nurse in practice, I encountered suicidal people all the time. I have no thoughts on people ending their own life, that is their choice.

Issues with incest in the Bible
Amisja comments on Apr 26, 2018:
Prof Christina Hayes talks about this at length. Basically what she says is the OT is a set of books with a group of stories about flawed, damaged and basically normal for the time. Incest was not unknown (still isn't). Depends how close but certainly first cousins marry in UK. This isn't a particular problem until you get inter-generational first cousin partnerships over several generations. The point of the OT is that it is veiwed as a morality lesson which it isn't. If you see it as what it is, a group of stories about a group of rather tawdry people, it makes a lot more sense. As for Lot's daughters. If you review the story, the daughters believed they were never going to see anyone again ever. They believed they were locked in with their father as the only possible sperm donor. Its very yuck, lets be honest but so is a lot of historical literature.

Hi Ian, I feel utterly distraught for his parents. They have fought so desperately hard for their little man, their love for him is palpable but they need to let go. I look at my three and feel so lucky they are all grown up. I know though, I have no idea how I would have reacted. They both should be massively proud of themselves.
Would AI be helpful to find real truth about nature?
Amisja comments on Apr 25, 2018:
Nobody steal my idea ok? So I have this idea of making a virtual world, you use AI to inform its creation. Artificial reproduced circumstances identical to those of the big bang (or our nearest guess). Then sit back and literally watch the fireworks. Maybe speed up the proceding 13.4 billion years. I think we could learn a lot.

Amisja comments on Apr 25, 2018:
Its so hard, I stood in front of 600 students and I nearly wet myself! I had a serious derealisation experience and I am mental health nurse! Then I remembered Shakespeare. He said stick your courage to the sticking place. (Or words to that affect). As in you are going to have all those nasty anxious feelings, just do it anyway. Or in the words that have carried me through every single major decision in my life...one...two...three..f**k it!

I am British but I still hold a US greencard, my boys are American as is my ex. I will never live in USA again. On the whole, most Americans I met were the hardest working most generous people I have met anywhere. I say this even of the religious types. The vast majority were sensible and pragmatic. I don't know what happened, but bloody hell you deserve much much better than this. Seriously this man is a privileged entitled creep, but for his money, he would likely be in prison. The way he treats people, women particularly, is utterly shameful. I don't believe he even believes half the stuff he says himself, he says it fot his own engrandisement. I simply do not understand how that utterly despicable creature got into power. I do understand that he won on the belief that he would take away power from who people believed were a priviledged class. What he actually did was take power away from a group of highly experienced knowledgeable people and gave it to a supremely priviledged class. He has people believing that all the organisations providing checks and balances against any corrupt power (erm him) are corrupt themselves. He claims all of Obama's successes as his own all the while trying to destroy his legacy. Please please please vote him out, impeach him, imprison him. You are worth so much better than that.

If time travel were possible, when would you go?
Amisja comments on Apr 24, 2018:
According to clever types is time travel is possible then you can only travel within your own experience....so your own sentinent life. I would go and tell my friend to stop working so hard, stop smoking and eat food. I would tell my Mum to check herself for CA. I think there is a chance we could if we make super clever PC models oh the past and recreate him.

Amisja comments on Apr 24, 2018:
What is this thing? It isn't a thing. Its not even about evidence or making sense. It doesn't even get that much of a response. To me its like saying what would you do if you met a fairy godmother, it ain't happening, there isn't one so there is absolutely no point. As for all the shite its all just random chance. A baby dies a horrible death or a complete gobshite wins the lottery. There is no rhyme or reason, just enjoy that we have each other and we have today.

Why do we fall in love?
Amisja comments on Apr 23, 2018:
We fall in love because we need each other. People are so frail alone and will (and do) literally die of loneliness. Finding someone who completely enhances your life, who thinks like you, you shares your life goals and who you fancy is wonderful. Staying in love...well I am clearly the wrong person to ask about that.

I am so boringly traditional. Men and manliness do it for me. Hardworking decency, kindness and strength. Money is a turn off but someone willing to work with me to build something is an ideal. Physically I like men but of course appreciate how lovely some women look. As someone who looks rather alien to the female ideal I always slightly awkward with very beautiful women. Just a Lancashire lass, built for hardwork the ability to feed a family of 5 on a quid and a loving man by my side.

Have u ever convinced a religious person that what they believe is all myth and does not make sense?
Amisja comments on Apr 21, 2018:
Yes and I felt a bit guilty afterwards. It was an African guy from Nigeria I think. He told me his father had type 2 diabetes so I piped up oh in that case you must have had white ancestory. Well this got us on to talking about Neanderthals and how it was they who carried the T2D gene and as there were none in Africa, its likely he had a European ancestor, so we talked about genes, hereditory and evolution. I remember him looking at me and saying, 'this means there isn't a god'. He looked so crestfallen I felt dreadful...hope he moved on.

You know here in UK people really don't care and if they do, they'd consider it a bit rude to say anything. She said, "Oh Jayne yer an Atheist...but yer so lovelee" ( I tried to type that in a Southern Irish accent). I kinda feel sorry for you guys, it seems that Americans can be very judgey sometimes

Am I the only atheist that doesn’t smoke pot?
Amisja comments on Apr 21, 2018:
I don't have any vices. I see a lot of young lads (it almost always seems to be males) who developed psychosis as a result of smoking skunk (The GM version of cannabis). I know the arguements in regards to pre-morbidity and self medication but the risks are too high. Although I totally support decriminalisation, I think use should be regulated like alcohol or tobacco.
Wow.
Amisja comments on Apr 21, 2018:
Hi
In China and India, men outnumber women on a massive scale.
Amisja comments on Apr 21, 2018:
I never ever worry about any population crises like these. They have popped up throughout my life. Populations will naturally even out, especially when women have education, decent healthcare and access to birth control. Skews in population have happened from time to time but ultimately if a woman choses to have only a couple of children then things will settle down. When I lived in China, there were tons of places where the one child one family was more or less ignored and there were plenty of girl babies. I'd say education and healthcare are the key. In fact in future, I predict we might see massive drops in global population when health care is more widespread and fertility decreases. Look at places like NZ and Italy for example.

Why did USA become so incredibly entrenced in religion and EU escaped?
Amisja comments on Apr 20, 2018:
I read an academic paper meant to inform policy about deradicalising fundamentalist beliefs. Of course it was focussed on Islam but included concerns regarding people from West Africa entrenched in beliefs about witch craft etc, in addition to focussing on potential risks from so called, pro-life groups etc. Basically the UK and Western EU are focussed on 'defundamentalising' (is that even a word) all religious groups. It struck me that this wouldn't even be constitutional (if I understand correctly). We have happily made laws restricting religious freedom throughout history (especially if they were going to ban mince pies!)Just recently a town in UK has banned pro-life protests...well done I say. Maybe people need to be given the excuse to not think religiously?

Amisja comments on Apr 19, 2018:
As a mental health nurse, my colleagues would often let off steam (tough job) by drinking. When I went into academia, I expected it to be different. Its not. Brits drink. Every celebration is greeted with tons of booze, we 'wet babies'heads' with a drink and drink to send our dearly departed on their way. I really don't know anyone who would be unkind about someone with substance issues, but there again a lot of people with MH problems have comorbid substance issues. I always challenge hypocrisy when I see it...either that n block em ;)

North America is such a weird place on the one hand (especially in USA) you fly flags everywhere, but then on the next deny that culture as being your own. Its like me saying I'm a viking. Yeah probably a 1000 years ago my ancestors where. Now I am English. I talk like an English woman, I do English stuff. Be proud of your culture and if you aren't...change it

Amisja comments on Apr 18, 2018:
Where I live I am sandwiched between traveller camps and to be honest, they are ok. Their tradition tells them that if a thing is not being used, it should be free to use by them. Kinda makes sense except we generally consider it theft! I once took a young lass home from the launderette, my washer had broken and she'd helped me with those huge machines. She had her families' washing and 4 little uns running about. She couldn't have been older than 25yrs old. She couldn't read or write and told me she'd been married at 14 but she was bright as a button. Trust goes both ways of course and her fella gave her a right ear bashing for getting in my car. Mental illnesses is endemic in the gypsy community and poorly understood, its rare they read or write, leave school about 12 and marry very young. It is something I have considered further research for my doctorate. Closed communities often have lots of problems and it appears that restricting access to education is the way they maintain the structure. They aren't the only ones of course, the Brethern and the Frumm Jewish communities have similar issues but Travellers do live more closely to use 'settled' types...interesting

Amisja comments on Apr 17, 2018:
I would never consider any other person beneath me. Neither would I post an arbituary figure based on whether or not you are good at working out sequences. Intelligence for me is far more complex. Some people on the ASD score highly on formal IQ tests but are unable to match their socks. Intelligence is about subtle awareness of the environment, of other people, of other creatures. It considers the past and the future and see each living thing as vital to our existence. Intelligence understands the complexities of human endeavour and conflict and respects all. There are vastly intelligent people who have never picked up a book. Respect all and always look for the best in everyone...you'll find it
