Andy4608 comments on Mar 23, 2019:
btw, the link only led to a subscription page, so I was unable to access the article. Is there a way to open the article? I am by no means an expert but the Restitution Law was passed in 1957 and matters were meant to be settled (in the BRD) by 1963. I don't know how that shaped up in reality. A family friend who escaped in 1938 had his estates (in Mecklenburg iirc) confiscated by the Nazis, post war they were taken over by the government of the DDR. After reunification the principal house and a portion of the land was restored to the family.

The only French pastry I have ever made was French bread.
Andy4608 comments on Mar 21, 2019:
My knowledge of the art of the boulanger is largely from the consumption side. We used to have a French baker near us. He baked for local restaurants, though, if you knew, he would sell you a bag of baguettes or batons for a few bucks. Croissants were only available occasionally and only in the cooler months as he said the heat made the butter too soft work with. He also that it was hard to get a commercial oven that was hot enough to create the classic crust. Props to you for giving it a go.

Andy4608 comments on Mar 19, 2019:
Not the best article I have read on the subject. Conflating the idea of the pre-eminent nations of the two periods deliberately allowing starvation in the interests of protecting commerce. An interesting thought, though I think the tariff approach might have made more notice and maintained the parallel with today. The effects of the mono-culture potato crop failure were exacerbated by the Corn Laws which placed a tariff on imported grain, thus keeping prices high. Grain was available as has been mentioned. The Corn Laws were a left over from feudal times and represented a clash between the landed and industrial groups. The latter were opposed to them as higher prices of staples led to wage demands and there had been civil unrest in the early part of the 19th century over high bread prices. The Corn Laws were repealed in 1846 allowing the distribution of grain, by which time the damage had been done. Sloppy of the article not to mention them. Not our finest hour.

The best perception of the 2016 election is that a considerable number of people did not pause to consider what they were voting for. They were so determined not to vote for Hillary Clinton that any consideration of the consequences was passed up (similar happenings in the UK with the Brexit referendum). Maybe the the benefit of this (hopefully short) return to the dark ages will be that more voters will remember what a wiser man said: "elections have consequences".

As someone with a detached interest,it would appear that the folks voting to leave had no idea what they were voting for. It is easy to stir up opinion against an institution, which while largely being a force for good, has probably upset the vast majority of the population in some small way. The politicians favouring Brexit seemed to be careful to avoid details and played heavily on emotion (see above) and downright falsehoods. I am not a fan of May (or her predecessor) but she was dealt a weak hand.

The Green New Deal proposes elimination of nuclear power in 5 years.
Andy4608 comments on Feb 23, 2019:
Firstly, I think we need to look at the Green New Deal as a discussion point. The discussion has started and when the hysteria dies away some progress will be made. All power generation has a price; as a society we have to decide and accept how we are going to pay. The sources of electricity need to be diversified and a commitment made to eliminating the use of coal. European countries have made a start on this. Nuclear power is not the easy panacea that the article gives. Construction is massive, location is defined by the need for cooling water (as are all thermal generators),the waste is long lasting (to put it mildly), in this day and age security is a concern. I believe its use in Europe is contracting, the French were always the greatest proponents.

Andy4608 comments on Jan 28, 2019:
In a similar situation, I have an interest but not an input in both (really need to talk with someone about this whole taxation without representation thing). I think in both elections there was a failure to consider what they were voting FOR. It was easy to leap on to the "not" bandwagon and ignore the potential consequences. There were many reasons for this, including misrepresentation by the interested parties and a desire on the part of a number of voters to make a point to the establishment. The victors in both promised over simplified solutions to complex issues and used a fast-moving (and largely untrue) narrative to keep the establishment on the back foot. To answer the original question, I am not sure. The republic is showing considerable resilience with a clawback taking place at state and congressional levels. The UK is bending and may be suffering for its relatively informal though complex constitution. I have hope for both.
