Is time a real concept?
DangerDave comments on Mar 11, 2018:
If time is "real" it is far beyond humans' capacity to understand, not merely in its immensity but more so in its complexity. We measure time based on movements of heavenly bodies which have, over eons, established our perfect biological rhythms with them. In this though we have lost the concepts of the expanses of time, its possibilities but mostly the limitations of having so little of it. We see it as linear instead of as the mutable "dimension" it is. In measuring time in the simplistic ways we have we as an egocentric speices feel we have mastered time when we in fact have made ourselves slaves of it.

We are at least centuries away from separating ideology from reality. If we are to survive those centuries we must separate, and end, the damages caused by ideologies. These people represent among the MOST harmful aspects of their ideologies: those which deny any damage is casued by them.

DangerDave comments on Mar 10, 2018:
Absolutely. Even in the most benign of governments you have the "big brother" message of "we provide for you, we protect you...you'd be helpless without us." I've seen the US move from the relatively benign social democracy of the 60s ("relatively", because we were in Vietnam "protecting ourselves" from commies and brown people, etc, etc) to the oligarchic police state we live in today. And, as our media promotes the "trivial" fears of local to world politics we are blinded to those things for which we should be concerned as these leaders rob us, cater to special interests who poison us and our planet, war profiteers, etc, etc

DangerDave comments on Mar 10, 2018:
@jlbriney I want to thank you for bringing up the term "skeptic"...it finally brought to my attention the perfect antonym of "dogmatic" and the attached post and article. I have yet to hear a valid argument that an atheist who is not also a skeptic is not, by definition, dogmatic. Like a theist you are speaking of a *belief* in something, as self evident as it may seem, of which you cannot possibly have conclusive evidence. Arguing that as you may, is the very definition of being an atheist is to have a closed mind? As ludicrous as that may sound that's the only conclusion any such arguments tend to lead. Any readers of this post who further reads the short link I just found are welcome to respond. https://agnostic.com/discussion/35069/dogmatism-vs-skepticism-the-skeptical-zone

Given I did (as an agnostic) at a very young age I can say it was going to happen and caused the friction that alientated me from most of my family by my teens. Still, I prefer that to living the lie. I'd worked it out with my mother at about 8 to no longer have to go to church at 12 and complained loudly and often those 4 years. By then the damage had been done. One sister and later two nephews are the only family I have now...but the rest were never really "family" anyway.

DangerDave comments on Mar 9, 2018:
This analysis was above my pay grade as a counselor, and that was twenty years ago as an addiction counselor. (Since I've worn many hats in primarily entertainment fields, counselor among them.) From that training I'd at least *appear to him* to believe and await the blood test results. The immediate needs of the client is paramont. "Are you ok? Everything is going to be just fine." Short Answer: There are too many triggers for panic attacks, even among those with no acute mental illness. The most obvious would be how he was 'brought in' and what he'd experienced immediately before. "Why are you here today? What can we do for you?" I'm coming from the point of view of a residentiual counselor. The clients I worked with had already been screened, tested and evaluated. Still, with regular training and staff meetings with an exceptional intake and psychiatric team I'm sure I'm not far off base.

Evolution of the mind
DangerDave comments on Mar 8, 2018:
Maturing definitely...I may be at the end of my 'intellectual evolution" though. I'm no longer the guy who'll pour over text books and retain large portions of them. I amazed myself after recieving a liberal arts degree to be able to easily understand highly technical programming and web design manuals years after my unrelated math and sciences courses. Afterwards, I could go to work on related projects with very little references to tables or other highly specific information in those manuals. I gave up any hopes of "proving" atheism or any theistic theories early on in high school, having already concluded there is much more to any such answers than any person could possibly know with any certainty. Today, I have absolutely no desire to program or involve myself in any such "information overload". I don't have the retention of days past and I've found it very frustrating to try. While all the technical information and research of days past are lost and archaic now anyway, I'm perfectly at peace. If something is interesting and I can find the approriate "cliff notes", I'll check it out. If I am still evolving, it is in now wisdom and creativity over merely gathering information.

Why do atheists exist? - Quora
DangerDave comments on Mar 8, 2018:
*So, in a sense, most of us are **atheistic** about the possibility of getting murdered, not because it doens't happen, but because the chances are so slim that it does not affect your daily routine.* Here the writer should be saying ***agnostic*** because you do admit a possibility, no matter how slim any of these may be. As you can see from some of your responses, there are what this writer refers to as *gnostic atheists* but I feel they can better be described as *dogmatic atheists*, who can be quite sectarian in their presentations of the various beliefs they present as facts. The only common consensus they all seem to have is if it cannot be empirically proven (by today's standards, with today's information, in a way they can understand, etc) it cannot possibly exist. https://agnostic.com/discussion/34186/dogmatic-atheism-and-scientific-ignorance

One of the same. Then one needs to ask.. which so called godhead are you actually praying to.. what...
DangerDave comments on Mar 8, 2018:
I'm unabashedly agnostic so I'll go out on a limb on this one. If there were actually a godhead...and let's just define 'It' as a "god of all gods"...I'd crawl out that further branch to say said the godhead would be omniscient. Right beside that is the twig which would be dangling the assertion the lesser gods would translate..or have angelic secretaries who could. A beauty of being agnostic: I can consider stupid shctuff like this. No, I have no empirical proof but when you have empirical proof against...I still won't care!
Can you provide a label for my belief system?
DangerDave comments on Mar 8, 2018:
Being I'm agnostic (I consider the possibilities of several god theories) and you are clearly an atheist I'd approach some atheists to help you decide which other labels are applicable...IF such labels are that important to you. I will add as a spiritual humanist you don't have to believe in ghosts to consider yourself a spiritual atheist. See the link below and discuss it with some atheists who so identify. In my opinion, 'freethinker' **cannot** apply to an atheist or anyone who will claim knowledge of or say they *beleive* anything about what they cannot possibly know with 100% certainty. That is the very antithesis of freethinking. But that's just me. https://thoughtcatalog.com/ben-atwood/2012/04/5-ways-atheism-can-be-spiritual/

The Lovely Comments Republican Atheists Receives from Left Leaning Atheists - YouTube
DangerDave comments on Mar 8, 2018:
I'm sorry but after two minutes in her total lack of continuity became too much for me. It would seem any group which wanted to be taken seriously would chose a speaker capable of...speaking. I can understand being atheist and conservative but modern republicans as a vast majority are hardly either. What I'm getting from those two minutes is someone (representative of a group???) who pathologically clings to a persecution complex.
Tough question here! Why are so many people absolutely certain the bible has NO truth in it if they ...

I've studied the buybull as an individual, in several religious institutions and in detail (on cherry picked sections, of course) in a southern baptist college. I came away with the conclusion I would not "buy bull" with just a few of the inconsitencies, absurdities and formost the "holy attrocities" of which there is a more complete listing in the Skeptics Annotated Bible. (link) The OT represents a very rare "history" written by the losers to unify wandering, usually landless, nomadic tribes vilified by their "neighbors". The NT is a complete work of fiction that's actually a compilation of various then popular religions, created to unify a dying empire which was very effective at creating the world power we know today as the catholic church. Though the buybull is replete with some universal truths it is more so filled with hateful, devisive rhetoric in that any group who wants to choose a few absurd verses to declare universal truth while disregarding any which may conflict with those so chosen, they then have license to destroy any who would disagree. They are themselves at that point "gawd's chosen", after all. The very existence of Jesus is questionable but the vast majority of "biblical history" is not: it just didn't happen and the very phrase "biblical history" is a contradiction in terms. http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/
How are you handling your Facebook page?
DangerDave comments on Mar 8, 2018:
Hasn't changed since Myspace. Working with very diverse, but rarely divisive, personalities in various entertainment fields I just flow with those rare "rant posts" about theism, atheism and everything in between. Now over two decades later I'll sometimes rant as well and be equally "iggied". Rants in my social media circles are more often about social injustice, a deal gone bad or a terrible restaurant experience. For instance, we're almost in 100% agreement the NRA is a terrorist organization. Still, the posts are rare and the responses are likewise typical: see post, like post, move on.
Thalasophilia.

Did you mean: Thalassophilia (???) I love memes that make me look up stuff...spelling nazi practice is just an added bonus!

The religious would find a way as they have with centuries of new discoveries that repudiate their "holie" writings. Nevermind they are chock full of contradictions in and of themselves. Indoctrination is a powerful thing, especially in the hands of those who profit from it.

DangerDave comments on Mar 7, 2018:
@HippieChick58 and @ArashL brought up a good point: did you mean romanticist, romantic or perhaps something else? Some of us have a few years but not so many we could be considered romanticists...look it up! Or maybe you were alluding to the arbitrary nature of labels? Yeah...I'd go with that! ;)

DangerDave comments on Mar 7, 2018:
For me humanitarian spiritual humanist apatheist is enough labels...many others apply but...why? With the undeniable label "human" I'm subject ot change so I'll use whatever identifiers apply at the time. Others will too but that's more indicative of who they are as a person.
