Welcome, fellow survivor! For me, lupus was easy compared to a family and community that expected me to be fundies just as they were. Four types of cancer seems small by comparison to many but you have come to a virtual "island of broken toys" in various degrees of self and community repair! Glad you made it...so far AND here!
So at first I was worried about what you guys would think of me but I have decided that I don't care...

PREACH IT!!! Shallow is as shallow does...and it doesn't come more shallow than calling someone shallow! Don't sweat it...I came here expecting more too. The difference may be I'd already discovered unbelievers can be @$$holes too. I'll say publicly you've been absolutely open, honest and delightful. I adore you already and certainly look forward to getting to know you better!

DangerDave comments on Feb 1, 2018:
Wow...I'm glad those I worked in and attended were more secular. Any religious input was from the individual and they were warned if they went into it much beyond "my HP, whom I choose to call god". That worked out well for me in that I became a counselor (and wouldn't have if it were as you described)...then many years later sought recovery myself (ditto). It wasn't surprising in the Atlanta institution I worked at and the South Carolina center where I got sober, but even the AA meetings usually held in fundie churches observed those basic rules. I feel for you...its a shame such organizations as you work for are even allowed to use such...misinformation. It can be very counterproductive.
Those who saw the last jedi.....what do you think they're gonna do for leia in the next movie?
DangerDave comments on Feb 1, 2018:
I've heard from a reliable source if they haven't found her already they'll probably CGI her. One of the first models I worked with in Vegas was a near perfect Leia lookalike, so much so my Disney contact was ecstatic, but she was told by her bosses they aren't even looking. That's all the details they'd share, or let her share, but that's not surprising. Disney is very secretive, even in a very secretive industry.
Sativa? or Indica?
DangerDave comments on Feb 1, 2018:
Sativa for creativity and "partying", indica for relaxing and pain management. I'm an old school smoker. My favorite pipe is older than my last date. I'm curious about the edibles but weed easily has more "bang" for the buck. I'm experimenting with sativa strong hybrids for the best of both worlds. Its great living in a recreational legal state!

Perhaps more Americans will chime in but last year I moved to a "buffer zone" of the US, the midwest and specifically Las Vegas, that has been relatively normal...for now. Around the rest of the country though...wow...three devastating hurricanes; the western wildfires; droughts, flooding, freezing, and tornadoes of increased frequency, intensity and occurring in areas you normally wouldn't expect them... Becoming a counselor for Atlanta street kids. I took the job to get to the biggest entertainment mecca close to home, determined to be a "rock star". (Still am, btw!) I got the job because of the "education" part of my brand new orchestral music ed degree. Let's just say I was really educated! The reasons they ran away, their adventures before and after...wow. While I wasn't previously a complete hedonist the sudden shift to being a humanitarian was the most profound "instant adjustment" I've ever experienced.

DangerDave comments on Feb 1, 2018:
What bull did I not buy? Fundie southern baptism. I'm pleased to have been born into such a fundie family, though. Trying to sing "jehebus loves me" while the walls were shaking from the preachers' voices on an overpowered sound system just one thin wall away, telling our parents we'd ALL be going to "hey y'all"...I'm just wondering how I was the only three year old to pick up on the fact it was all BS.

DangerDave comments on Feb 1, 2018:
If you're understanding the buybull as a brutal mythology mixed with occasional words of "generic wisdom" I can agree, to a very limited degree. If you're proselytizing or even presenting it as a "nice" religion you have really chosen the wrong forum. Either way, which verses are you cherry picking? There can't be many and there are certainly many more who present yawnway as the cruel, weak, petty, jealous and, yes, inherently evil god he is. I certainly hope none of these are included in your nice stories: http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/cruelty/long.html

Thoughts? Neil deGrasse Tyson asked if he believes in god: [facebook.com]
DangerDave comments on Jan 31, 2018:
Agnostically speaking show me evidence *against*, as he did with the "good vs omnipotent" dichotomy. The theist will bring arguments against this, of course, and in my opinion there are far too many other arguments against such clearly man made religions. Such arguments can cross over into other god theories however and there exists those where god is "amoral", unconcerned of inherently "evil" by our moral standards. Still, when debunking abrahamic religions he definitely brought up some of their primary fallacies.
Every time I see the word "skeptic" I misread it as "septic" :/

Favorite early SF/Fantasy Book
DangerDave comments on Jan 31, 2018:
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle was the first sci-fi/fantasy book that captured my imagination though the rest of the series was disappointing. I was also unimpressed by the 1983 movie not only for the omissions but I had visualized it much differently. Let's see if Disney does any better in the 2018 remake.
Death Cult Christianity

How old were you when you first watched porn?
DangerDave comments on Jan 30, 2018:
You naughty girl you...oh...and define "porn". I saw my first Playboy (or similar) at about 5 sneaking around searching my uncle's stuff. Those days I'd describe Playboy (et al) as artistic nudes. Today, especially with Penthouse and Hustler, erotic nudes are those that are suggestive but no real "acts" are occurring. If you need a definition of "acts" visit me in Vegas. I'll be glad to demonstrate on...for you...as a pubic...errrr...public service, of course. (I know, I'm such a great guy!) DangerDave comments on Jan 29, 2018:
Not really. Being a jerk is being a jerk, regardless of faith or lack thereof. Honey, not vinegar...or, as they say in other "recovery programs", attraction not promotion. We have been given a unique opportunity here to show theists there is a "better way". It really brings me great pain that so many who come here seeking truth are beset by those who will ridicule an belittle them, then seek to "convert" them in the same way many theists would. Still, when we get the evangelical theists on this page I'm the first to jump on the ridicule bandwagon. There are those of both extremes so indoctrinated that it would take an extreme "revelation", a moment of irreconcilable truth that would overcome the cognitive dissonance, that could possibly change their beliefs. *Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. Is God something we either need to accept or reject?
DangerDave comments on Jan 29, 2018:
As an agnostic, no. I don't accept or reject any "god theories" but some I consider interesting possibilities. Any actuality of the abrahamic god, especially in its contradictory writings and the resultant actions of the believers, in no way speaks of any reality of the loving, benign god their "profits" try to sell us. When someone is murdered by a theist because of their beliefs, in that sense I see an "act of (their) god", however.

The greatest respect are from pagans, new agers and other nonabrahamics. DangerDave comments on Jan 29, 2018:
Hate, no. Fear...let's just say I have a healthy respect and give a safe distance to the religious. Fanatics abound and too many have "righteous" reasons to kill me. I can't fathom what you consider "grand and wonderful" about iron age social engineering where the judaic "chosen" (as are many tribal mythologies) has been reinterpreted to thousands of thought control systems which create the fanatics bent on destroying all others. And "intertwined through history"? You're definitely not talking about the historical validity of the buybull itself...that is too often incorrect and self contradictory. It does speak clearly of the historical inhumanities of each of these mythologies, however.

Nutrition. Do you trust the experts? What do you believe to be true about health & nutrition?

How much do brand names matter?
DangerDave comments on Jan 26, 2018:
Guitars, (other instruments,) cars, (and other big ticket items) usually its a big thing. Still, I'll take a chance sometime. My "B" brand bigscreen had just the features I'd have paid much more for in a Sony but, after two years' faithful service under fire and over bumpy roads, I'm still well pleased. Food. clothes, toiletries...not so much. I have stepped up from Banquet to Marie Colander's (heh) bachelor food and usually go for an appropriate variety of shredded cheese over sliced. Dawn is tough on grease, gentle on the wallet; I've been nursing gift bottles of colognes for decades; if its not "costume" its likely bargain bin... So a lot, and not at all. Even with guitars, where I'm most picky, can you guess which is the "real deal" and which I consider to be an acceptable knock-off?

Ultimately it is all of us for allowing this to happen...and get worse. Trump, McConnell, their supportive GOP, the actual "fake news", Fox...and the masses who support them are complicit. DangerDave comments on Jan 25, 2018:
My first degree and three jobs as a music director. I was a heavy drinker then so it didn't much matter ethically. I'd send church members to their respective clergy for religious matters and openly discuss other topics, usually music but often philosophy, politics,... I "came out" to the third pastor well before he came to me about the job while I was still dating his daughter, my soon to be fiance. I might do it again that way but it'd have to be an artistically and spiritually progressive church such as the unitarians, if not some agnostic ones. No shame. And no more southern baptist churches for me. Though it was fun to watch them head bang waving goat horns (they mean "I love you" too, y'know!) but NOT...NOT dancing!

Now ask yourself...would you want the "heaven" of a god who would encourage its believers to kill each other because they're sure their way is best? I'm agnostic and consider many "god theories" but jehovah ranks very low of any possibilities. In addition to the insane effects of these beliefs, they have absolutely no foundation in reality. http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/

Hi Serenity! Just make yourself at home and click if it looks interesting!
Do we have writers here? Let me know about your published work.
DangerDave comments on Jan 24, 2018:
Define published. I've owned a few websites, wrote a wide variety of content for several others and done some "vanity press" for events... I've got some samples in my profile photos, mostly songs and poetry from larger fantasy and philosophical works.
How Important is Nudity?
DangerDave comments on Jan 24, 2018:
Hello fellow artist! Important? Not really. Preferred is more accurate, and that is in direct relationship to temperature. I don't care how warm the hot springs are...if there's ice all around my clothes stay on! So even before nudist resorts I was wearing as little as possible in my space, limited by consideration for current company. I mean if you're wearing it needlessly you're getting it dirty and you're going to have to wash it so...
What does evolution mean to you?
DangerDave comments on Jan 23, 2018:
Well, I have to be different so I should at least offer an explanation. I just wanted to say "Hi" Kitt and offer you an invitation if you're ever in Vegas for lunch, some sightseeing and possible some participation in my arts...see my prof pix...OH...and why I answered "Not Enough... ...I'd change this to "incomplete". Evolution is real, no doubt, but the science is still in theory stage. There are still missing pieces and some that just don't fit...VERY minor pet peeve time... I found it VERY difficult to believe scientists had "found" "Eve", or the very first genetic human woman conveniently with extractable DNA, with no idea of that of her mother, grandmother,... Now evolution as proven facts; inherited and mutated traits, natural and artificial selection, survival of the fittest; is just that. Its nonsensical to argue. But, for me, its even more nonsensical and inconsequential to argue who "Evo-Eve" was. We could discuss it over lunch...if you can drag me from explaining the roles I'd want you to portray...to me, that's the important stuff! And, if you read all that, it was a pleasure meeting you! https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/no-mitochondrial-eve-not-first-female-species-180959593/

Some of the "nicer" reasons I left the south, never to return... I don't have all the answers but then I don't have the questions, either. I know your daughters are grown and have dealt with these "blessings" in their own way but, if questions or concerns arise, answer to the best of your ability...otherwise I see no need to address what you must expect as an everyday occurrence. It was the hatred and intolerance of the xian culture of the "wholly" dirty south that made me leave. As a liberal, agnostic freethinking artist who expresses such qualities in my art I just didn't feel safe there anymore.

Welcome, be patient and be as active as you want! This is a new site and, at this point, its doing much better as a freethinkers' social media site over a dating site. Piscean poster child here so you'll see me randomly flitting around, sometimes not at all for days depending on my mood and current artistic projects...BUT I'm here for the duration...and the conversation!
Did you ever have a job that sucked the life out of you?
DangerDave comments on Jan 23, 2018:
In the cubicle again and, yes, it sucks the life out of me while keeping me...surviving. I passed on a better paying but much more "life sucking" promotion so everyone there knows my interests are elsewhere. It is just a job though...I'll see my way through it as I have many others.

DangerDave comments on Jan 22, 2018:
THANKS FOR POSTING!!! Good to see another counselor among us. My areas are educational, behavioral, addiction and performance arts therapy. Just from the crises I've dealt with intermittently I could tell I wouldn't want to be on the "front lines" as you are...thank you for your service as well!

DangerDave comments on Jan 22, 2018:
Hang around and you'll get to see the strife among nonbelievers...we have ourselves some real fanatics as well! There are a million possible reasons people may be hostile but, in the case of ideologies, very fragile egos rest on the "certainty" of being "right", even if its about things no human could possibly know. There seems no escaping it. Welcome to the human race.

DangerDave comments on Jan 22, 2018:
..."proof, only gossip"...do you ever watch "real" news? Hint: Fox is not really news. Faux: "fake" in French. Don't need to see a video. I get clear evidence every day that racist, sexist, xenophobic, greedy, lying buffoon has no business in the White House...except to benefit himself and a select few others.
What do you think is the common link in this "group"? Do you think it's dating, or theology based? ...
DangerDave comments on Jan 22, 2018:
The common link is we are unbelievers of one form or another, considering becoming so or just curious about. I'm here for all of the above but "dating" for me is finding act leads or models to represent my "mythos". One exception: I completely avoid the "debates" of "our" psuedointellectuals who want to harass others endlessly about opinions they call facts. None for me, thanks.
Where does the discussion of alien life fit in this forum?
DangerDave comments on Jan 22, 2018:
The first choice was closest for me though I believe little and think a lot these days. Given the extreme conditions in which life developed on our planet and similar conditions exist on countless planets its a near mathematical certainty. Any that'd be intelligent enough to create UFOs is another story. And fuuuughet the naysayers. You can talk about whatever you want here...welcome!

DangerDave comments on Jan 21, 2018:
Any, all or in any combination of the above? Those and a few others yet unmentioned. I'm an apathetic agnostic though...I don't care if any are "real" or not. I do play with them in my art, some examples on my wall.
What genre of Music to you most enjoy?
DangerDave comments on Jan 21, 2018:
Some I like, some I don't in all genres and my "female fronted fantasy" covers a lot. Here are some of the more theatrical samples... https://youtu.be/ekcsi21Coss https://youtu.be/2O2Aec2o-4w https://youtu.be/NnY8C77EQKU
If religion died out, how would we repurpose all the churches?
DangerDave comments on Jan 21, 2018:
I'd like a few, please. I'd want a selection of them ancient to modern, preferably with a trained staff for the homeless already in place. All working "front" would require period costume, be they staff, homeless or volunteer. The front areas would be a perpetual creative arts festival. Not that I've put a lot of thought into it or anything.

Hi. Here is a question: have you changed a cherished opinion you held based on new evidence? Can you...
DangerDave comments on Jan 21, 2018:
I have few cherished opinions. The latest I gave up was the "humans use only 10% of their brains" fallacy I first was taught in 3rd grade and have had it reinforced several times since including most recently the movie *Lucy*. I have to wonder if Morgan Freeman (who played the scientist, sometimes narrator as he does in several factual roles) still believes it. Though I discount man made religions, probably my most cherished opinion is "no one can prove or refute the existence of a god or gods." Since the answer is not forthcoming, I can rest easy with that one. Well, not really. My opinions on how to best integrate my new act lead are currently far more important...and mutable.

It has been weighing on me heavily, this last debate I was a part of here, in regards to the thread ...
DangerDave comments on Jan 21, 2018:
Apology accepted? hehe...no, I don't think you're referring to me. Hope not, anyway! I've experienced much the same, so much when I first came to the site I thought of leaving: being told what words I could use here or ANYWHERE, explained incessantly how I was already an atheist, being recruited to an atheist church bombing squad, how an atheist "lawyer" was preparing a defense...not for the bombers but for atheism as an ideology... I however remain unapologetic. I came here hoping for a united front of unbelievers and I have found it, including you, in those who are far more interested in assisting newcomers in their transition than debating...attacking them for whatever minor differences in beliefs they may have, usually those no one can definitively have the answers. I remain a positive member and a positive person. I avoid negativity and seek unity in our diversity. If I enter a debate it is of special interest to me and I come prepared with supportive facts or at least a well formulated opinion in the absence of the facts, fully understanding any debate is futile with someone presenting opinions as facts. For those, if they are too hostile or persistent, I report. There are a lot of people, some of our most "verbal", who should not be the first the new nonbeliever or fence rider should be exposed to...but usually they are. As I see it we have far more pressing political, social and ethical issues than to debate, and attack, incessantly over questions none of us as "mere mortals" can possibly answer.
