I am a retired university instructor of English language and literature, having spent the bulk of my teaching career in Asia and the Middle East. Overseas teaching definitely has a shelf life, though, so I now work on a semi-retired basis as a freelance indexer. You don’t get rich doing that, but the lack of any bosses suits me well.
Originally from North Carolina, I have lived in a small central Kentucky town for the last nineteen years. Life as an atheist in the Bible Belt can be lonely, so I was happy to join this site two years ago. Things are improving here in this town, though—it finally discovered the repeal of Prohibition a couple years ago, so now there are actually places to go and hang out at--you know, like what folks do in other parts of the country do.
My interests include travel (especially the road trip variety), photography, craft beer, and writing. I'm also kind of a foodie and enjoy cooking the cuisines I got to know while living abroad. I'd like to get back into oil painting, maybe a few classes at a folk school back in North Carolina toward that end.
I have been a widower since 2010, and at the time I joined this group, I had no illusions at my age that I would find further love here or anywhere else, so I was fully prepared to spend the rest of my life alone. I have since been proven wrong and am now living with a wonderful woman I met here on this site.
