I had many experiences over the years...worked for a manager that was clearly a sociopath and her cruelty was getting the best of me and I had to resign...when the owner spoke to me about it, he told me...’but she has never taken a penny out of the till!’ She had been there for many years. You are not being rude...it is more like instilling guilt, trying to insure that you get what you are owed. I can see that this situation is going to weigh heavy on you. You did something that you felt was necessary for the well-being of your dil, your son’s wife...and now the reality of that loan has hit you. I commend you for doing this, you came from your heart and not your head...I would most likely do the same under similar circumstances. If you are not accustomed to carrying debt, this makes it even more uncomfortable for you. Don’t let this sour your relationship with your son and daughter in law. They will always be more important to you, than that amount of money. What I would suggest is that you tell them how scared you feel about owing money, but that you wanted to be of help at a time of your dil’s illness. And, ask them to work out a REGULAR plan with you, on a payment schedule...something that they can afford and that you can count on. Then try and trust that this will come out just fine...please don’t try to guilt trip them about the money...that is not a good strategy to get people committed to repay money (or anything else). You did loving thing, and that you can believe in. So inform your son and daughter in law...to please consider that owing this money will be on the worry side for you, so their payments will be important.
