How effective are MPX vaccines? Katelyn Jetelina Vaccines will help control the monkeypox (MPX) outbreak. The bad news is that we desperately need more doses. And we don’t know how much the vaccines help and in what manner they help (prevention, duration of disease, severity of disease). By Shirin Ali In Kelley v. Heather Cox Richardson It’s been quite a day. It began with Axios sharing photos of what purported to be White House toilets with torn up paper in them. The notes on that paper appear to have former president Trump’s distinctive handwriting on them. LINKNovavax is here! Just not the silver bullet we need YLE 07/20/2022
Yesterday, ACIP—CDC’s external scientific advisory board—unanimously voted to authorize the Novavax vaccine (called NVX-CoV2373) in the U.S. This was big news for the small, underdog Maryland company who had a long road to authorization. After rigorous clinical trials, FDA and CDC scientific meetings, and more than 1 million vaccines already rolled out across the globe, it’s clear this vaccine is safe and effective. There are two ways this vaccine could potentially help us in the ...

LINKCOVID’s getting stronger and we’re growing more complacent
By Donna Brazile After returning from a trip home to New Orleans, I was diagnosed July 11 with COVID-19, joining over 89 million Americans and over 559 million people around the world who’ve received confirmed diagnoses of the disease. The actual number stricken is undoubtedly higher and keeps growing, as new coronavirus variants and subvariants spread.   The office of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced on July 10 that he tested positive. LINKCDC issues health alert warning new parents: What is parechovirus? What are the signs, symptoms in babies?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health alert last week warning parents and pediatricians the potentially dangerous pathogen is circulating in the country. The agency said it received multiple reports of infection since May and encouraged health care providers to test for it when patients present certain symptoms. The CDC said most of the reports entail the PeV-A3 strain, which is most commonly associated with severe disease. The agency did not say which states ...

Nutcases are coming out of the woodwork. 7/16/2022 by Yelena Dzhanova An Arizona man is suing the clinic that gave his ex-wife abortion pills — nearly four years after the termination. Mario Villegas and his then-wife went to get an abortion in July 2018 at a Phoenix, Arizona, clinic, ProPublica reported. LINKWhy the omicron offshoot BA.5 is a big deal
Once again, COVID-19 seems to be everywhere. If you feel caught off-guard, you aren't alone. After the omicron tidal wave washed over the United States in January and the smaller rise in cases in the spring caused by the BA.2 subvariant, it might have seemed like the coronavirus could be ignored for a while. After all, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated in December that nearly all Americans had been vaccinated or have antibodies from a past infection. Surely all ...

by Nicole Karlis The semi-automatic weapon known as an "AR-15-style" rifle has become synonymous with mass shootings in America. Katelyn Jetelina MPH PhD BA.5 has arrived. An estimated 10-15% of Americans will be infected. Unfortunately, hospitalizations and death will follow, albeit at lower rates than we’ve seen before.
