I remember my dad started locking the doors of the house when I was about 8. I don't remember if he ever locked car doors. I became vigilant about locking car doors when I lived on Army bases. You could be ticketed for leaving your car unsecured and your sponsor (military member) would have to have a discussion with his commander. I am careful to lock my doors where I live now. Most often they're all locked, I usually come and go by the garage with an automatic opener.
What are you making for Thanksgiving, if you celebrate?
HippieChick58 comments on Nov 19, 2018:
I am taking a dish to my daughter's house. It has sweet potatoes, cranberries and apples, topped with a bit of brown sugar and cinnamon mixed with coconut oil. Some of the guests at daughter's house will be vegan so they will be able to partake. There will also be turkey and other dishes, the host and hostess are not vegetarian or vegan.

Why Not Date Men That Have Already Grown Up? Not Everyone Has a Peter Pan Personality.
HippieChick58 comments on Nov 19, 2018:
I have rarely met a guy that gave me an urge to tell them to grow the hell up. In fact I can think of two that I have dated in the past 9 years, and it only took a few dates before we or I realized it wasn't a viable relationship. This guy above, yeah he's pretty, I can't say he looks grown up, just doesn't ring my chimes. Why would you continue a relationship ship with a man who isn't grown up? I generally feel that when I meet men they're telling me and showing me who they are. They are as grown up as they are going to get. If they aren't "grown up" enough or otherwise suitable for me, I'm not going to beg them to change, and I'm not going to change for them. I'm going to walk away (or run if he is bad enough). The only time you can change a man (or a woman for that matter) is when they are in diapers.

What are ppl having for Thanksgiving in the US?
HippieChick58 comments on Nov 18, 2018:
I had Thanksgiving with my family today. Oldest daughter and husband hosted, and they fixed turkey. I brought a dish that was really simple and delish. Sweet potatoes, apples, and cranberries, with just a bit of cinnamon and brown sugar, and coconut oil baked until tender. Thursday I have a second dinner with other family and a request that I make something vegan as several of the guests are vegan, so I will make that again.
‘Nothing on this page is real’: How lies become truth in online America - The Washington Post
HippieChick58 comments on Nov 18, 2018:
By Eli Saslow November 17 at 7:40 PM NORTH WATERBORO, Maine — The only light in the house came from the glow of three computer monitors, and Christopher Blair, 46, sat down at a keyboard and started to type. His wife had left for work and his children were on their way to school, but waiting online was his other community, an unreality where nothing was exactly as it seemed. He logged onto his website and began to invent his first news story of the day. “BREAKING,” he wrote, pecking out each letter with his index fingers as he considered the possibilities. Maybe he would announce that Hillary Clinton had died during a secret overseas mission to smuggle more refugees into America. Maybe he would award President Trump the Nobel Peace Prize for his courage in denying climate change. A new message popped onto Blair’s screen from a friend who helped with his website. “What viral insanity should we spread this morning?” the friend asked. The more extreme we become, the more people believe it,” Blair replied. He had launched his new website on Facebook during the 2016 presidential campaign as a practical joke among friends — a political satire site started by Blair and a few other liberal bloggers who wanted to make fun of what they considered to be extremist ideas spreading throughout the far right. In the last two years on his page, America’s Last Line of Defense, Blair had made up stories about California instituting sharia, former president Bill Clinton becoming a serial killer, undocumented immigrants defacing Mount Rushmore, and former president Barack Obama dodging the Vietnam draft when he was 9. “Share if you’re outraged!” his posts often read, and thousands of people on Facebook had clicked “like” and then “share,” most of whom did not recognize his posts as satire. Instead, Blair’s page had become one of the most popular on Facebook among Trump-supporting conservatives over 55. “Nothing on this page is real,” read one of the 14 disclaimers on Blair’s site, and yet in the America of 2018 his stories had become real, reinforcing people’s biases, spreading onto Macedonian and Russian fake news sites, amassing an audience of as many 6 million visitors each month who thought his posts were factual. What Blair had first conceived of as an elaborate joke was beginning to reveal something darker. “No matter how racist, how bigoted, how offensive, how obviously fake we get, people keep coming back,” Blair once wrote, on his own personal Facebook page. “Where is the edge? Is there ever a point where people realize they’re being fed garbage and decide to return to reality?” Blair’s own reality was out beyond the shuttered curtains of his office: a three-bedroom home in the forest of ...

My kids are not planning on Social Security, they have a strategy to save for retirement that is not dependent on the government or their employer. My kids are politically aware and active, they challenge authority and ask the hard questions. My kids don't recognize gender barriers or gender limitations. Their mom was in the Army, they think women in non-traditional roles is normal. They have never understood why sexual identities is such hard issue. They have always "known" that gender is not linear or binary. They will celebrate when marijuana becomes legal in our state, and they may be alive when that happens; I however might not be. They are so much more aware of what the government is doing than I was at the same age. I don't know what I did to raise these awesome people, but OMG I did really good.

The Children's Museum is outstanding!! We visited on Christmas eve day in 1993. We followed that with dinner at Ivar's; great food. During dinner one of the kids (age 9) tells me she doesn't feel well and her belly itches. She had just broke out in Chicken Pox. I'm guestimating we exposed about 1000 kids to Chicken Pox that day.

I "knew" it was coming, they have done it for years. But I was still pissed. I have now switched stations, and it will likely be March or so before I switch back to the one I left. In a well ordered universe there would be no mention or celebration of Christmas until at least after Thanksgiving, and IF I had my way it would be not earlier than December 1st. Don't even get me started on Black Friday starting on Thursday. NO, BAD. I do not shop for Christmas gifts on Black Friday. One year I broke my phone on Thanksgiving day and I shopped for a new phone on Friday, but that was a necessity. I don't see commericals at home because I don't have cable TV.

Until my girls started living with a male, I'm pretty sure they never did laundry or folded underwear for another person. I hated it!! Let the boys do their own darn clothes! Human Connection is fundamentally difficult.
HippieChick58 comments on Nov 12, 2018:
I am not someone who has lots of friends. I tend to like many things that are solitary, and I am not one for parties or big groups of people. I have a few good friends, my family, and lots of acquaintances. I generally have something in common with those who are friends, as it is for all of us. Many of my friends are females my age that sew, or have grandchildren, or read, or have cats, or are Humanists and Liberals. (I just read how boring my life is!) In my area, and in my age group, most of the single men are not liberal, or humanists, or (sadly) readers, or stitchers. I figured out a few years ago that finding a partner in my area is going to be extremely difficult. I'm OK with that. I'm not making an effort to look, but I do make an effort to get out of the house and participate in activities where there might be or are single men. I know some really great Humanists men, most of them are married and I like their wives too. So, I'm getting on with my life, if I connect with someone it will be a plus. If I don't, I'm ok with that. I'm not sitting at home waiting for him to show up, I've got 19 books and 3 quilts to finish, and grandchildren to spoil. Sometimes I don't know if I have time for a relationship, but I can tweak things a bit.
For sure that happened!

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
