This old ad.... Did you ever have picnics like this?๐Ÿ˜€
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 5, 2020:
My mom worked in a restaurant that made fabulous fried chicken. The few times we had a picnic she could get the chicken cheaper from work than from the Colonel. However, other times I have the Colonel, but not for a great number of years.
So true.

What did your adult child(ren) thank you for doing while raising them?
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 4, 2020:
My children thank me for always making time for them and being there. I was a stay at home mom, I had time to take them everywhere they needed to go and time to hang with them. I always stayed up til they went to bed, I'd usually hear what was bothering them about 9:45 pm. I pushed them to step out of their comfort zones, and with one of my kids I literally marched her right out of hers, it was for her own good and turned out to be a turning point in her young life. She had gotten in HUGE trouble (police involved) and our pastor friend said she could come help out at a parents/caregiver night out for people caring for mentally handicapped older children and adults. She DID NOT want to go in, and I hauled her ass up there and turned her over to one of the leaders of the group that we knew. When I picked her up she was SO excited! She had the best time of her life. She discovered she has a heart for challenged people. Now that the other two are mom's themselves, they know what being full time with babies and toddlers is like.
So, I heard on NBC that they think this is the end of caucuses in Iowa. What do others think?
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 4, 2020:

My parents generation has now all passed, and a few of my first cousins as well. My mom was the first of her generation to pass on, she passed at age 45. I internalized very young that tomorrow is not promised and today is all you have. Every day I try to tell people that are important to me how much I appreciate them because I might not have a chance to tomorrow. Yes, this aging sucks. I can't change my past, though we are never truly done mourning it, but I will honor my past by applying the lessons I have learned from it. I wish you peace, and I want you to know I have learned much from you here on Ag. com and I appreciate your presence here, and in the world. I am better for having known you. Know that you have touched lives and made a difference.

HippieChick58 comments on Feb 2, 2020:
Seriously, if I had really understood my ex's antipathy towards animals I'd have run far and fast. He grew up with a dog, but he did not want to be a pet owner. We had pets, and he was marginally tolerant towards them, but definitely did not "like" them. He only liked the service they could provide him. He would walk the dog because he was a great ice breaker to meet neighbors. But he hated feeding or cleaning up after them, and didn't want them in the bed ever. My cats think I AM the bed.

I didn't mind so much she got a bird, I DID mind where she wanted to eat it. I had to call for reinforcement as I was in no shape to deal with it. How old is too old?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 27, 2020:
I grew up not especially religious, default Xian because we weren't Jewish or Catholic. As an Army wife the chapel community offered lots of support and other young moms for friendship and companionship. I bought in for a while. I always had that WTF moment, but I needed support, especially far from home with small children. It was also keeping my marriage together. When I knew positively that the marriage was dying I also took a hard look at the Xian concepts, and realized that was a whole bunch of what was wrong. My ex is still sucked into that especially conservative xian crap. I tried to maintain the church connection as a single mature female, but most churches are not welcoming of single mature female adults. That was awakening. The movie ZeitGeist and a few other helpful sites, and I hung out my atheist flag. My adult kids said "about damn time." As for your folks, old habits are really hard to break, and they likely find comfort in their beliefs. Also check what reinforcement they're getting. Faux News is especially toxic.

Why energy drinks are worse for you than coffee of soda pop
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 24, 2020:
I have never been a fan of coffee or any sodas. I don't deal well with carbonated beverages, never have. I used to drink the 5 hour energy drinks but decided they were too expensive. I do drink gallons of water a day, I figure I'm getting extra steps with the potty runs. If I need the pick up I pop caffeine pills. Sometimes I have coffee with enough cream and sugar I can gag it down.I had an overdose of caffeine at a very bad time once, I went over 36 hours without sleep and an ER trip, I had a really erratic heartbeat not to mention it mimicked a panic attack. Lesson learned.I tend to avoid anything with ingredients I cannot pronounce, and I have a big vocabulary. As close to the way it comes from nature is my motto, consume less from factories. I think it is healthier and saves a crap ton of money.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 24, 2020:
I remember as a child (age 9 or so) our old Tom got really dirty. Dad told my youngest older brother, younger sister and I to give him a bath. Yeah right... So we found the old baby bath, partially filled it. Sis grabbed the front feet, I grabbed the back, and brother lifted the cat into the tub. Poor old Nikko! Once we got him in the tub the three of us got him washed up. He was pretty used to be manhandled by kids, we were 3 of 6.

That reminds me of the old question, "what would you do today if you knew it was your last day alive?? How do you know it isn't?" Make your peace with everyone around you, apologize where needed. Tell those you love that you love them, forgive those that have hurt you. Resolve your regrets and be thankful when you wake up in the morning. Ever since age 45 I have been thankful to still be here. My mom died at 45. I am now 62. I tell my kids all the time how much I love them and how proud I am of them. I cherish the time I have with the grands, my mom didn't ever get to meet any of her grandchildren. I don't think I bear any grudges towards anyone, however there are a whole bunch of people I don't trust very much, most of them I work with. I can live with that, if I died today they'd advertise my job within hours if not minutes. Always ask yourself will this matter 5 years from now. If not, don't sweat the small stuff.

OOOOHHHHH dear dawg! I did a chicken pox playdate of sorts... I knew the kid had chicken pox and we went to Thanksgiving dinner at their house anyway. My kids were almost 2, 5, and 9. The 5 year old was sick two weeks later. Two weeks later on Christmas Eve day the grandparents were visiting and we went to the Children's Museum in Seattle (it was packed!), and then to Ivar's for dinner. The oldest say"my belly itches" and I pulled up her shirt to find the first pox. The youngest got up the next morning and looked like she got hit by a truck. Poor little mite was so sick. Then she came down with RSV, then bronchitis, and then pneumonia. She had been scheduled for surgery (ear tubes) in February, but that got kicked back until she recovered. She was sick for nearly 2 months. Would I do that again, OH HELL NO! Chicken pox can wreak all sorts of havoc on children as well as adults. Lets just vaccinate and get avoid them all together. Chicken pox are most contagious the 24 hours before the break out, so can you imagine the number of children and adults we likely exposed? Oy vey. This was 1994, we've learned so much since then.

Ohhh FFS.
For a change of pace today I decided to visit a Unitarian Church this morning.

Is there a Humanist group nearby. The Omaha Humanists have a Sunday Secular book club that some consider a good substitute for church. We have other activities. I pulled this link up for you: https://americanhumanist.org/get-involved/find-or-start-a-chapter/

Does anyone know the exact year domestic cats forgot how to eat?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 12, 2020:
In all the years I have shared my home with cats I have always fed canned cat food in the morning, and dry available for free feeding throughout the day. My girls were started with Trader Joe's Tuna cat food. And then TJ stopped selling it. So I've tried the other TJs foods, and they did not seem to care for it. So I tried the Friskies from the grocery store, and mixed results. Miss Zelda eats anything and plays with the dry food. Miss Xena doesn't seem to eat any of the canned stuff, but will eat the dry, she also looks like she has lost some weight which is not a problem. The girls used to race me to the kitchen in the morning and dive into the canned food as soon as I set it down. Now they might race me to the kitchen, but they wander off when I set the food down. They're not starving so I'm not worried, but a bit annoyed with TJs.
I have never seen this before, anybody else?๐Ÿค”

It is not so much no one responding to my greetings, it is the greetings I get from what I suspect are scammers.
I enjoy the interchanges of thoughts and feelings with many others on this site.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
