John Williams is one of the honorees on a PBS special for 2018 Lifetime Grammy Awards.
LenHazell53 comments on Oct 5, 2018:
Williams is very good, but not one of my personal favourites, much of his reputation is grounded on Star Wars and many of his later works are repetitious, notably the Harry Potter theme being a simple retread of the Hook soundtrack. However his influence on the likes of Danny Elfman and Hans Zimmer is undeniable. So congratulations to him and to coin a phrase "Thank you for the music"

I would like to your help on our "new" website domain Humanist.
LenHazell53 comments on Oct 5, 2018:
1) what do you think about allowing a religious person to say "I'm also a Humanist"? I would probably advise them that they are confusing Humanist with Humanitarian 2) what questions should we ask new Humanist.com members that we currently don't ask on Agnostic.com? Do you understand what actually means to be a humanist? 3) If we want to promote civil discourse, what things should members pledge to do (e.g., never dehumanize people even if disagree with them)? If the members ARE actually humanists this should be totally unnecessary.
What does "agenda driven" mean? Could you please give me an example sentence?
LenHazell53 comments on Oct 5, 2018:
In general terms it means that an action is performed with the aim of contributing to an over all effect, even if that is not obvious at first. For instance stirring up public unrest about immigration, may be portrayed as protecting an indigenous culture, when in reality it is a politically agenda driven act to create civil unrest and dissatisfaction with government so as to provoke a general election.

In the UK "Lifesavers" are marketed as Polo mints. Prior to 1929 they were called Lifesavers here too, but never took off eventually disappearing in the late1920s. In 1939 Rowntree sweets manufacturers of York acquired the licence and changed the name to Polo mints dropping all but the peppermint flavour and launched a whole re-brand, to great success as a pocket sweet and breath freshener for adults. Fruit Polo's were introduced in the sixties but have never had a great deal of success, and until the introduction of spearmint flavour in the 1990s there have been no other variations.

The existing/non existing Universe
LenHazell53 comments on Oct 3, 2018:
Wow, some big assumptions here If we accept the idea that our universe came into existence as a result of the big-bang! **No one has ever said that, the so called big bang was not the start of the universe, it was the point when all existing matter in the universe began to expand out ward, it was not an act of creation it was a change of form. Some theorise that before this event there had been a “big squeeze” and that the universe goes through a continual and perpetual cycle of expansion and contraction.** We must accept also that, that was the time when space and time was started to exist. **No we don't, it is* likely * this is the case, since matter in motion in space creates measurable time, and time requires measurable space in order for motion to occur and matter when subject to time moves, it would seem matter, motion, time and space are all mutually reliant and self perpetuating. It is possible to describe this mathematically, but without actually observing the moment of universal expansion it is not yet a proven fact, simply the best theory we have at this time. ** Following that logic, **What logic? You have offered only speculation.** it can be easily assumed that, the expanding wave of existence is what we perceive as the time passing. **Anything can be assumed, proving it is the challenge, However you have suddenly leapt from talking about the universe to the subject of existence as if they are the same thing. The universe exists, but all things that exist are not the universe, only infinitesimal parts of it. As dark matter and dark energy theory have shown in recent years, large parts of the universe do not exist in the sense that we understand existence to be defined and are in fact subject to a whole other set of rules. Like wise Atomic theory has shown a larger part of the universe, those spaces inside of atoms between the nucleus and the outer electrons are actually empty space, there is no existence in there. Time as you and I have discussed here is largely definable as a measurement of motion, the effect of energy upon matter, our brains have evolved to rationalise this in to a practical concept by the act of measuring.** We must live within that breaf(brief?) wave.. We called the present! So.. . Nothing in the past.. Nothing in the future. **I pretty much agree with you here, other than in defining the passage of time as past present and future. These are purely conceptual terms, our consciousness applies to our movement through the rigours of matter in motion. **
Is it okay to be human but to feel like a stray dog? Asking for a friend.
LenHazell53 comments on Oct 3, 2018:
Learn the difference between being alone and being lonely. Being alone can be a fine experience, loneliness is a state of mind you can learn to cope with it as basically it is just a phobia. No friends at all is a better situation to be in than constantly tolerating the company of poor friends and users.

Where Did the Universe Come From?
LenHazell53 comments on Sep 26, 2018:
Existence is, because the natural state of affairs demands it to be so. The alternate is non existence which is an impossibility, since non existence is the absence of all existence, like cold and dark this is only a concept, there is not an actual thing, as that would negate that which is being described. It would seem that if quantum mechanics is correct, existence require measurement and perception, therefore existence requires life, they are mutually dependent and sustain one another, both require time in order to be observed and to observe, to be and to move and to be measured doing so. Therefore the question is moot, the universe is, it cannot not be.
Action in France on affirmative action to protect women from wolf whistling and assault.
LenHazell53 comments on Sep 26, 2018:
Physically assaulting a stranger is a crime, it does not matter what the motivation was, if it was intentional it is assault. It can be dealt with by personal means, verbally or physically (I know from experience some women can pack a hell of a punch) or you can call the police and quite right too. However Now as to the other part of the alleged crime, if some one calls me fat ass on a bus, I am not going to call the police and waste their time, I'd think what a dick, and leave it at that. It's not nice but it is the irrelevant rantings of a drunken buffoon. Frankly the police have better things to do (or should, though I am sure a lot of "officers" would far rather deal with a wolf whistler, than a machete wielding bank robber and so love these new "crimes") 21st century policing as predicted in 1993 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlyMZNURdmc

LenHazell53 comments on Sep 25, 2018:
I find this statement to filled with false equivalencies and logical fallacies. To take the first example, a trap requires prey, since a trap need not necessarily be used to capture, it can indeed be for the purposes of deception or execution for example. How does this concept of a trap equate with fate? Fate implies a degree of predestination, though not so unalterable as destiny itself. Therefore fate is not a trap more a funneling force, a guidance. Likewise freedom of choice does is not indicative of compulsion any more than heat is indicative of cold, only a given understanding of compulsion such as as a simile for an act of tyranny. The second stanza seems to be attempting to draw some esoteric maxim, that verges on the eastern mystical concept of the holistic self, being superior to an objective or even subject life view. Drawing from this the contention that ego is a false or at least social construct that allows negativity to become a guiding force in consciousness. This is inherent nonsense. Finally relying on the two previous points the conclusion is drawn that reality has an inherent though random interconnectedness that is both at once ordered and chaotic, thus indicating that the order of the all is in fact a serendipitous accident. It is much simpler to simply agree with Friedrich Nietzsche that order emerges from chaos naturally. How the conclusion is drawn that there is no "I" without there being an "other" or no "here" without there being a "there" to compare with, from the given contentions is a mystery to me, especially when followed up with a direct contradiction "here" is "there" and "self" is 2other". Proceeding from the premise that I think there for I am aware of the proximity of thought, is a far better starting point than this contrived mess.

What was the worst book you ever read and what made you dislike it?
LenHazell53 comments on Sep 25, 2018:
The worst book (in my opinion) I have ever read and the book I have disliked the most are two different things. The worst book was a Sci-fi Novel called Mantis (AKA Eat Them Alive) by "Pierce Nace" Mr Nace as far as I am aware never wrote anything else again and that does not surprise me. 160 pages of a deformed lunatic, cover in shit (literally) using his platoon of giant praying Mantis to visit revenge on the Texas gangsters who cut off his willy for screwing them on a drug deal. It really is as bad as it sounds, and has the writing style of a petulant 5 year old fantasizing about what he wants to do to the kind in the playground who stole his lollipop. I have never seen the words "and then" used so many times per page. The Book I disliked the most was Dodger by Terry Pratchett, mostly because ti was disappointing, and tragic, written when he was very ill and one of his last works, it abandons his style all together, is not a discworld novel, is not funny and perhaps was a last ditch attempt at literature, but fails miserably (in my opinion) reading it was like watching a once brilliant friend, descend in to slow and undignified death.
