I think you misunderand the gravity of this. Nestle convinced many women in poor badly educated areas that formula was healthier than breastmilk. Consequently many stopped breastfeeding or never started. These being poor places, when the families ran into financial difficulties, many babies starved to death when their mothers would have been able to produce breastmilk for free. One of nestles many horrible crimes in pursuit of profit.

OpposingOpposum replies on Jul 7, 2018:
@Bobby9 that's an entirely separate issue. Let's take for example my "Uncle Jim". Had 4 kids, all of whom went to college, got jobs and only one of whom had kids. Uncle Jim has 2 grandkids but us disappointed that he doesn't have more. When he goes to Wal-Mart and sees some Guatemalan lady with 4 kids, he's jealous. His kids have told him one of the reasons they decided to remain childfree is because its not financially feasible for them. Why is it, he wonders, that this poor woman can afford kids but his kids can't? The lady must be on welfare! Is uncle Jims assessment of the situation simplistic? Does it ignore a hundred other factors? Yes but he's looking at the limited data he has and drawing conclusions. Uncle Jim is a composite character of many folks I know. It's a common story. These people are sad and angry that their kids have to move so far away for decent jobs, that they have few if any grandkids, that sending their kids to college like they were told ultimimately meant that they "lost" their families.(this has a lot to do with these folks ire against higher learning and academia) Immigrants make a convenient target for them to blame that doesn't tax their brains with too many variables.

@TiberiusGracchus no I am addressing the basic concepts on which you BOTH base your reasoning. You stated " embryos and fetuses are humans in an early stages of development" @Jlangston "dislikes" the idea of abortion. You're both implying that something is inherently wrong with abortion. That is the idea which I will fight until I'm literally dead as it is the idea which is most responsible for the argument for control of womens bodies by anyone other than the woman herself.

This is literally why women have been fighting you all for forever. You demand control of our lives and bodies then call us unreasonable and overly emotional for objecting.

A) abortions and contraception are not as easy to get as you seem to think. Particularly if you are very, very poor. Plan B is 50$ last time I checked which is more than 7 hours of work at minimum wage. Not to mention doctors visits and a missed day of work. That medicine makes some women deathly ill. Absolutely no birth control method is 100 percent effective. Even abstinence can be screwed up by rape. Many women in states such as Kentucky and Oklahoma have to travel across the state, be traumatised and tortured by groups of protesters AND pay just to get an abortion because those places are down to one or two clinics that privide the service for the entire state. Trust me if men had to listen to this crap they'd be outraged too. When's the last time you heard a man being asked to consider the life of his life threatening tumor because, since it has all the markers of humanity, it is a human? All arguments against abortion boil down to the premises that A) a fetuses life is more important than the life of its mother or her well being and B) women are not capable of making decisions about their bodies and must be policed so that they don't go destroying the whole human race, one abortion at a time.

@TiberiusGracchus. You and Jlangston both like to toss little bits of opinion into your comments then cry" strawman" when called out on them. An embryo is not a human it is a potential human in the same way the sperm and egg are potential humans. Furthermore embryos and fetuses depend on their mothers bodies for their existence. They cannot survive other than by being in a womb. There lies the difference between a human and a potential human. Frankly when YOUR health and future are at risk from pregnancy then and only then will I listen to your opinions. Men are not More Adult than women and I am sick to death of the attitude that all our decisions must be run by some man who "knows better" to be validated. The fact that you people don't even see your own biases is profoundly disheartening. I give up. None of you are worth engaging. You will never listen.

My fury comes from people who know nezt to nothing about the effects of pregnancy and child rearing always trying to put restrictions on the choices made by the people who are actually involved in and affected by these decisions. No one but a woman and her doctor belong in that office making life changing decisions. There is no way any legislation could account for the millions of variables involved. The attitude that a woman and her doctor are somehow incapable of coming to the correct decision without some "guidance" is deeply patriarchal and infantilising

@Jlangston70 but only with your caveats in place to make abortion rare. I am really really tired of the inherent judgement of such statements, implying there is something "wrong" with having abortions performed while giving lip service to being pro choice. This is particularly infuriating to me, personally. I have an ABORTION, that terrible, terrible act. My fetus had died and I was in extreme danger of going septic and dying with her, leaving my two year old son motherless. Whether the danger is physical, emotional or economic the threat is always very real and its not anyones business to sit in judgement on decisions women make about their own bodies and own lives.
