How do you manage to deal with theist people talking about God?
Sofabeast comments on Mar 4, 2019:
I depends on whether they are prepared to accept other views. Some I have encountered cannot deal with a non-Christian perspective. With those I tend to join in praising 'HER' when referring to their invisible friend. Then I make up some crap about mis-translations whilst putting on my 'superior English accent'. For those that try to convince me that their god did it, then I will use reasoned argument. For Christians there is always 'made in Gods image'. Just look at us (humans), what a FUBAR. Limited life span, fat, ugly, skinny, Autism, cancer, genetic diseases and other disabilities. The list appears endless. Why would a perfect being making a version of itself screw up in such a monumental way? For Islam, many of the arguments are the same, but I will autopsy Mohammed and suggest that his epilepsy affected his right frontal lobe with an Oligodendroglioma grade II tumour, changing to grade IV later on. This accounts for his bursts of hyper-intelligence and religious encounters. This are fairly common symptoms with these tumours in that location. It's something they can read up on. If he was the prophet of God, then he was only one of many thousands over the years. My wife suffered from this 'prophet complex' from time to time until medications sorted that out. - It's ok folks, she was an atheist and had an extremely high IQ (veterinary surgeons usually do) and understood what was going on. Sometimes I ask which god? Oh the one true god! Which one, there are so many to choose from.

DONALD TRUMP IS A LUNATIC!!! HE IS OUT OF CONTROL!! ANY COMMENTS?
Sofabeast comments on Mar 3, 2019:
You must be a Psychiatrist to diagnose someone being a lunatic, and if you are, then of course you may not comment in public about their medical condition. Stating he is out of control is subjective. He may well be completely in control, and that may well be the big problem.
Has Porn Become the Ultimate Passion Killer?
Sofabeast comments on Mar 3, 2019:
A mate and myself have debated the 'anal' intrusion into porn and sex between men and women. We cannot pin down when it started or importantly why. I cannot really see a good reason to indulge in anal when there is a perfectly perfect vagina to enter. What is more, an entry point that is designed to have a penis enter it. The anus is meant to expel, not receive. I wouldn't ask a lady (should I ever find one to be intimate with) for bum sex, it's simply 'nae right'. I don't think I would go there, even if offered. Porn can be a fun. My late wife used to enjoy it. We both preferred something with plenty of kissing and what appears to be attraction and interaction by the performers and at least a bit of a story that fills in our fantasies. Porn of course can be evil and violent or include socially unacceptable acts as well. Porn can just be hairy man arses and disinteresting lesbians who are just wanting to get the job done and finish work for the day.

Sofabeast comments on Feb 25, 2019:
I take it the USA has an ISIS bride as well? In a nutshell. If she is an American citizen, she must be allowed back in. That is because of a number of factors, including the law, the Constitution, treaties and international agreements. Then what intelligence can be gained from the questioning that she would be put through. It may not fell right, but the 'good guys' have to obey the laws.

It is good (in a bad way) to read this again. Bloody Brexshit has been delaying a recent Politics assessment. The trouble we had moving around Europe, buying things, and seasonal food. Still, I imagine we will get the duty free shops returning to the cross channel ferries.

Michele Fox, volunteer with Go Vegan Scotland appeared on Scotland Tonight on @stv.
Sofabeast comments on Feb 20, 2019:
I only saw part of the interview. But it appeared to be intended to be confrontational by STV. Now would I go Vegan based on what I saw? No is the simple answer. I don't eat meat every day, and I should try to cut down further but I am not convinced that a Vegan lifestyle is a good idea. However, to get back to the point, What I saw was the farmer attempting to debate, whilst the presenter was goading a fight. News programmes MUST be balanced in debate, otherwise they descend into being propaganda. Well done to Michele for sticking it out.

Racism is on the rise. Why do you think that is?
Sofabeast comments on Feb 20, 2019:
Racism it has been debated, is a political construct. Thus, governments and the people behind them will from time to time make use of racism to propel their agendas forwards. Race is merely a bureaucratic manner to catagorise people. Marx argued race is simply the class struggle and has been put together by the bourgeoisie to divide to masses against each other. The question is, is racism really on the rise? I'll look into that either later (I've got a chunk of Mein Kampf to wade through) or tomorrow morning (GMT) as this is my first subject at college.

It can be argued that there disparity in income is not only natural, but necessary for society to thrive. Friction appears when there is a disparity in happiness and fairness between the haves and have-nots. Once this hits an unacceptable level all that is needed to light the fire of revolution is a spark. The rich must be prepared to give up some of their excess spoils to prevent the violent removal of all of their treasures.

Sofabeast comments on Feb 18, 2019:
Labour down by eight MPs! I wonder if Chuka's 7 will increase their number and overthrown the evil Servalan... Theresa May. To be serious, though. I consider it likely that their potential of leaving had been discovered my Momentum who were then going to drop them in it with Corbyn. That way, he'd just bump them off one at a time replacing them with party liners. This way they get to give a voice to the middle or road politics that makes the British system work. Given some extra support from other more like minded politicians, they could form a new consensus party on similar lines that makes the SNP work. Corbyn has so far been an utter failure at being the head of the opposition and therefore is almost an equal to the Catastrophic Theresa May in the Brexit fiasco. PS, in case people didn't know, a Labour MP died over the weekend.
Regarding The Mantra “Therefore God Exists”.
Sofabeast comments on Feb 18, 2019:
Rene Descarte came up the idea of God the perfect being and therefore must exist etc. John Locke countered his argument by enlightening him that since he (Descarte) found there was no God, he had to come up with an idea to cover his fear of death and that he had wasted so much time believing in something that was not there. Hobbes agreed with Locke on this point.

Is love meaningless?
Sofabeast comments on Feb 15, 2019:
Scientifically speaking, what love is exactly remains unknown. What is supported by investigation is that there is a broad panoply of effects which are categorised under the label of love. Attraction whether familial, sexual-sensual, emotional or physical produces reactions that can last a lifetime. Is it meaningless? It has to be an evolutionary adaption, so no, it must have meaning which is possible we interpret in a subjective way. I have been, and really still am deeply in love with my late wife. As for Romeo & Juliet, yes they were stupid. There were other options available, and their characters would have been Catholic, and thus, gone to hell. At we know that bit is wobble nonsense! At the moment, it is all subjective.

The book was written by men, and sometime after the events. Then translated into lots of different languages with changes as understanding of dead languages becomes ever uncertain. Then consider the expanse of space. "If you think it's a long way to the shops, that's nothing compared to space" (Adams, D. Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy). What if God is busy with other creations? There are over seven-thousand million humans, he's got to be quite busy making interconnected plans for each and every one of us. Then why make so many of his children atheist? What about all those humans who died before God was invented? Did they get to heaven? Bringing new life into the world, then stamping it out again and all at faster than light speeds! Imagine the millions who are praying to him every moment of the day, no wonder he never answers!

How do you feel about assisted suicide at the end of your journey in this life.
Sofabeast comments on Feb 4, 2019:
I am in favour of it. However we must be careful about its use and abuse. Firstly, our life belongs to us, and therefore cannot belong to another person or society. Secondly, having seen this from my fathers perspective and that of my wife, who both died at the end of illnesses. He had had his time and wanted to go on his terms with family and friends around him having a good laugh, his music and probably a drink or five too. Instead he had to starve himself to death, waiting for his body to finally fail. Due to commitments I couldn't be with him at the end, I was nursing my wife through chemotherapy a 1000km north. So that wasn't nice for me or him. Then with my wife, she asked me some years before her untimely death to 'finish her' when the time came. I refused, but at her end, she changed her mind and wanted to live, she didn't want to leave me. Instead the NHS had to dehydrate her to death. She passed during the early hours of a Sunday, but her cognitive functions ceased on a Thursday afternoon. Just the last part of her brain stem operating the automatic functions. As a veterinary surgeon, she had put to sleep many 'furry family members' when their time came, she understood that at that point, it only serves to cause pain to family and friends by keeping a dead body alive. Choice and dignity.
Lest we forget the Cold War Those of us who lived through the Cold War remember what it was like ...
Sofabeast comments on Feb 3, 2019:
The Oligarchs existed before the fall of Soviet Communism, the new world merely allowed them to become open about it and to never fear being shot by the state. Today they just have to bribe their way out of it. If managed properly, Russia would become the premiere superpower and economy. But as always the elite farm the proletariat like mushroom - keep them in the dark and feed them shit. Putin's Russia is currently in a precarious state. What it needs is another Cold War to boost their failing economy. And someone just stupid enough to be easily made to think they doing the right thing. And Trump is more than stupid enough for that role. Russia will need to borrow money to rebuild its Nuclear arsenal so that the world remains at peace. Now there is threat of war, that will happen. As they re-arm. The USA will need to do the same. Both arms dealers will make money and the world can tremble for a few decades just in case it gets out of hand. Putin can play his hand that Trump won't live long enough or remain in power to deploy his new toys and whoever follows him will be stuck on course. This buys Russia time, and like chess they are in it for the long game.
Lest we forget the Cold War Those of us who lived through the Cold War remember what it was like ...
Sofabeast comments on Feb 2, 2019:
I was a back-room 'Cold-Warrior' towards the end of the Cold War era. I knew full well that if shit hit the fan, my call up papers were in the office safe. Next stop BAOR (British Army of the Rhine) and short haircut and some camouflaged clothes followed by a Soviet PoW camp if I'm lucky! If I stayed where I was, I'd be turned into a black shadow on the floor as the Rooskies nuked where I worked. To be serious, once the INF agreement is out of the way, then we could descend into a real shooting war as future tempers become frayed leading to someone doing something stupid. Perhaps we should also follow the power and money. Who stands to benefit from this? Was Trump just doing his Russian masters bidding? Could Trump have simply been out-manoeuvred by the far more skilled Russians, causing him the pull out thus, making the USA the bad guys? What this can do, is give Putin an excuse to carry out power grabs along his border states by political intervention and then direct invasion once a destabilisation of the EU has happened following Brexit.

Sofabeast comments on Jan 29, 2019:
Churchill made decisions based on his knowledge and social attitudes prevailing at the time. Right or wrong, they were made. Gallipoli was a military failure for a myriad of reasons. It was his idea, but he didn't plan the detail which ultimately let the adventure down. He talked SHAEF into an invasion of the soft underbelly of Italy during WWII, which proved a "tough old gut". He diverted food for an already starving population in region of India, (which caused at least a million deaths) to ensure Allied troops were fed and ready to defeat the Axis powers. He was an Imperialist, but then in 1939 the British Empire was the worlds No1 superpower. So, should we label him a criminal against humanity? It was his drive which saved the world from fascist domination. At this moment in time, it is fashionable to beat down old heroes and label them as evil, based on 'snowflake' criteria and values, so Piers Morgan has a point. But Mr Greer shouldn't be insulted in such a manner. People in power do some questionable acts.. For the Americans, George Washington carried out war crimes when he was a British officer and again as General of the Continental Forces. Judging the past with the values of today isn't easy. Study the evidence, and make up your own mind based on the evidence, not your emotions. As for Mr Morgan, the evidence is he is a fat, flabby wanker

Sofabeast comments on Jan 20, 2019:
Let us ask, What is rape culture? I have been brought up not to do or think rape is a good or normal act. All of the men I know or have known personally think this way too. Ergo, no rape culture where I live (United Kingdom). That said, the way that the mobile phone culture is evolving, sexual interaction at first meeting through words and pictures display a very direct sexuality becoming the the social norm. I for one, have never sexted or dick picted... yet! That said, I used to write erotic letters to my now late wife and she with me. These were thoughts of love and sex put into words using stories in effect. They were not 'wanna fuck' followed by a sexual image. However, talking with some of the young lasses at work on this very subject. They all replied that they expect sexting and dickpix. Partly because if you are in a nightclub, you may be unable to hear them, then there is gathering a choice of the available young men vying for their charms for the evening. None of this activity was perceived as at all 'rappie' to use their words. A tad shocking for us old-uns who had to go out and chat or be chatted up when I and the other mature ladies who were involved in the conversation were last single.

Sofabeast comments on Jan 17, 2019:
We are all products of our socialisation process, which can go some way to answer why she never seems able to interact deeply with human beings. The lady's not for 'understanding' should be her catchphrase. Following her massive defeat on Brexit and close run thing on Confidence, She should have stepped down as PM. She has demonstrated that failure is always her main option. At last she seems to be attempting what should have been done at the start - involving all the other parties, but even then she still seems to be preaching and not listening. Death isnae any fun, so I'll try to give you a little uplift on the subject. I'm off down to England/London for a funeral of the last major old man of the family. And we plan to have a hoot of a time. He has put money behind the bar of his local pub for his family and friends to enjoy. We will tell tales and celebrate to fellow. No black unless it's sexy - he got that from me. So in your terrible sorrow, find the fun, find the good, shed some tears and have a laugh. Three years ago I lost three people between October 11th and Christmas eve, only one from old age. A wife two friends, two close friends and a contemporary cousin. At my wifes wake, we played Cards against humanity - she'd have liked that. Big hug lass, and a kiss for your forehead. Tony
Last week I visited a tea shop & tried a few new kinds of tea! What kinds of teas do all like?
Sofabeast comments on Jan 4, 2019:
For me the best tea is Belfast Brew, from Suki Tea, Belfast Northern Ireland. It's loose leaf. Otherwise I go for various teas from Twinnings

Good to see America trying to catch up. Please keep at it.
I'm new to this group so wanted to show off my mini that I painted and sculpted the base that I'm ...
Sofabeast comments on Jan 3, 2019:
Very nice. I don't sculpt, but I do paint. In fact I did it professionally 1995-2012 painting many thousands of figures and models. Now with eyesight failing, I just do it for myself. I hate getting old! By the way, love the fox.
Does anyone Destiny 2 here?
Sofabeast comments on Jan 2, 2019:
Remind me again soon. I've not played for a while though
Not doing this again .

I'll be going to bed early-ish. I'm working in the morning. Like yourself, I have thrown myself into work. This is my third year alone, apart from our daughter. So far, it has not got easier, in fact for me, it has been the worst. First year, busy and local support, second year we had just moved house after being made homeless. And now here we are. Go to keep going though

Humans have been attempting to quantify the 'soul' for thousands of years. Perhaps it is the internal observance of self. The amassed wisdom of the ages still has not been able to say exactly what it is. When we die, what happens to the self? Is it gone? Changed into what? I felt that the 'soul' of my beloved wife departed about two and half days before her body gave out, but then I wasn't thinking clearly At the opposite end, where does it come from? My late wife said she felt 'the soul' appear in our daughter at about twelve weeks into pregnancy. Is that the point where there is enough neural activity to support some sort of self conscience? Let's be honest, we don't know. We each have a subjective view of ourselves.

Once the vote for Brexit was confirmed, then Camoron should have insisted on a government of unity, where an all party coalition government handled the Brexit. And yes, too much for one person

Sofabeast comments on Dec 19, 2018:
We will need an early general election after we either Brexit or suddenly remain. Then we can rebuild Cabinet consensus government. It will be beyond my lifetime before the debacle sorts itself out. Cameron has split to people of the UK and a 'Civil War' has happened. The drive for Scottish independence may well win out (I met Alec Salmond in my local Co Op the other weekend when he was buying up the cheap deals, and blue tracksuit bottoms with shabby shoes how the powerful have fallen) should they win, it will be 'Call me Dave's' fault. Of course if another referendum is called and it goes to remain, even with a decent majority then the divide is still going to be there. I watched a news item from Germany today. Their take is the UK must stay in or else sink. If we leave, then the crash on the pound will cripple our ability to import goods, kill the NHS and cause world wide recession.

I’m 18 years old and confused about my sexual orientation.
Sofabeast comments on Dec 19, 2018:
Our basic default is bi-sexual. Most of us will never act on this, as we tend to be strongly socialised out of those feelings from an early age to the point of becoming heterosexual. So try not to worry, and be happy whether you find love with a man or woman, or maybe both.
So, I have a question on which I would like to hear other's thoughts.
Sofabeast comments on Dec 19, 2018:
When I get time, I'd like to discuss this more deeply. I'm a student of social sciences, and this will come up as part of my curriculum. As I'm short of time right now. I'll put it this way. It is 'natural' but not nice, not acceptable. We are social animals who live by rules, norms, qualities and traditions. However, what is pedophilia exactly? In the UK it is sex with a person under 16. But in some countries the age of consent is 14. So would two consenting 15 year old partners who have sex abroad come back as pedophiles? Then there is the truly evil aspect where adults have sex with children. As animals we'll screw anything, but as I have said, we have rules. And they change. If you watch Game of Thrones you will see that teenagers are wed and bed reflecting the social norms of medieval Europe and the Middle East. But not children. Right, back to the last assessment before Wintermass
