After Shrubya's Iraq invasion, the pump meters on the wells were destroyed. There were articles about how it was taking forever to replace. Some journalists wrote of empty tankers coming into port that were not on the port registries, that nonetheless left with full loads. We loot at the end of a gun barrel. We're hoping to do the same with Venezuela. Nothing has changed.

I want to be the deepest, darkest chapter in your sexual diary.
WilliamCharles comments on Mar 30, 2019:
Have to admit being to being a bit surprised at some of the negative reactions based on it not being appropriate somehow in a singles/mingles/chat group? Because of the cartoon format? Because it is seen as too risque? Because if taken literally that it cannot be thought of as anything but offensive? I thought it prompted some interesting and fun discussion, both pro and con. Singles discussing various aspects of sexualty (in group appropriate terms of course) seems to be a no-brainer for a group where you'd want to get a feel for the mindset of people you might want to date, but then maybe that's just me. I usually excpect this much pearl clutching from the god-botherers, but it's easily just as possible that I'm incredibly boorish with an utter lack of self-awareness. Perhaps I should just go back to lurking with the occasional short little generic tidbits of approval or solidarity. Good luck to all of us in our individual quests to connect with that potentially special someone in meaningful ways.

WilliamCharles comments on Dec 22, 2018:
A point I think might be being missed here by some is what I wrote elsewhere regarding the whole debate over the MSM, so-called "fake news," and social media platforms. "It's why we (as a nation) can say we're outraged over supposed Russian meddling while being puppetmasters on a scale the public is largely oblivious to. It's how we can point fingers at other nations being the greatest threat to peace and murderers of innocent people with a straight face. Gatekeepers are the name of the game, and this becomes even more crucial as traditional sources of information are bypassed as being biased and unreliable if not outright propaganda predominantly. The most common challenging tactic of an opposing view is a blanket dismissal of a particular outlet ignoring whatever elements that are valid and deserve examination. Hence RT being panned as nothing more than an arm of Russian propaganda though journalists such as Chris Hedges do shows. It now gets a disclaimer for reliability whereas, for instance, the Washington Post or the New York Times does not. Whatever Rachel Maddow broadcasts is treated as somehow sacrosanct by some though any agenda MSNBC owners GE might have is not considered. The same goes for any of the other corporate owners of media outlets. It's not only Rupert Murdoch using his echo chamber to his own benefit. But yeah, ~5K of Russian social media ad buys gummed up the works for these multi-billion dollar empire conglomerates (not). Zuckerberg took their money, and is now taking heat for it. Mostly kabuki theater as the dog and pony show to further restrict content begins. 1984 meets Brave New World. Data mine as the metrics are perfected to pacify the masses, and ensure that the Ministry of Truth has final say as to the official narrative acceptable to disseminate." To pretend that speech you disagree with is an acceptable casualty when silenced ignores the whole point of free speech, or the strength defending it demonstrates.

"Looking at the rules as a whole, ProPublica reports that Facebook developed the rules in reaction to specific actors’, such as governments and users, complaints. At one point, the rules were open-ended, including a general rule that said, “‘Take down anything else that makes you feel uncomfortable,’” says Dave Willner, a former Facebook employee, in the ProPublica report. Wilner revised the current rules to make them more rigorous. The result, Teichman says, appears to be patchwork constructed not out of some top-down ethical determination, but rather a list slapped together over time. “Categories get this hodgepodge when they're just the result of being stitched together out of complaints people made,” says Teichman." https://www.wired.com/story/facebook-hate-speech-moderation/

WilliamCharles comments on Mar 21, 2019:
9/11 is the litmus test. So many of the things that reverberate to today are based on the unwillingness to demand full, open and transparent investigations of the attack, the crime scene forensics, and the apparent response failures. Anyone not in lockstep with the coming “payback” was a traitor, and anyone questioning the official narrative was a nutter. That the people so readily dismissing the skeptics, did not heed to call themselves to demand what the commission itself determined; that a proper investigation was needed to uncover the truth. Remember, the alternate explanation to deride conspiracy, was the supposedly comforting notion that incompetence, an unrelated type of criminality (the destruction of evidence), the desire to cover your butt, and a string of bad luck and/or remarkable coincidence, explained the seeming contradictions and that the right enemy had been targeted anyway, so no time to navel gaze as we needed to get our bloodbath up and running. My recollection is somewhat shorter as to what I saw and what we lost. I live in So Cal and commute to downtown LA, and have for over 20+ years. For *exactly* a day and a half (the same amount of time the air stays smog free after a good rain), the normally selfish and inattentive motorists drove in manner virtually unseen before or since. Over that two day period, they actually showed noticeable consideration and no longer drove oblivious to those around them, not caring who they cut off or didn’t let in or honked at for going too slow, or not getting out of the way fast enough… they treated the other drivers as fellow Americans that were also possibly traumatized or numb and that the default position might be that they would appreciate a random act of kindness from a stranger who might just cut another person a break for no other reason than they thought the anonymous person could use one. And then, as if it never happened in the first place, it was over. That was how long it took to revert back to type, and embrace dysfunction as normalcy. And that’s how we got to where we are today. There are some things in life that we can’t turn back the clock on, but tragically that is true even on those things we could turn back the clock on. We’re just not that smart or that caring, and I don’t think it’s overly pessimistic to say that we never will be. ~ LanceThruster

One other aside (I keep remembering pieces that stuck), was he asked about if you learned a potiontial sexual partner had AIDS, that wouldn't you agree they in that instant became a person you dhould never have sex with. He said that God's moral absolutes instruct that sex outside of marriage is frought with a danger indistinguishable from sex with an AIDs infected woman. I thought that was sad to demonize a person having contracted a disease, and assert that that status in his mind precluded that person from ever engaging in sexual relations ever again. Certainly openess about one's condition and effective and proper precautions are required, but he used so many examples that seemed a throwback to far less enlightened times. It didn't matter if it were civil rights workers, or hippies, or minorities... if they determined it was in their interest or merely pleasure to give you grief, you were going to get it. Even the catchphrases have a dark undercurrent. "You ain't from around here are you?" "You in a heap a trouble, boy." Now, there's dogwhistles when some things ought not being spoken too publicly.

"Why does the spread of hate speech matter? Hate speech is a hot-button issue for Facebook users who get upset when they flag a post as offensive but Facebook says it does not violate its rules. On the other hand, Facebook has upset users by mistakenly identifying posts as hate speech and taking them down. For example, Facebook had to apologize to a black activist and author after failing to distinguish between the people spreading hate speech and those condemning it. How worried is Facebook about the corrosive effect hate speech can have on the Facebook experience? It's working on ways to stem the flood of hate speech. For example, some Facebook users were surprised recently to see “Does this post contain hate speech?” listed under every post in their News Feed. "This was an internal test we were working on to understand different types of speech, including speech we thought would not be hate. A bug caused it to launch publicly. It's been disabled," Facebook said in a statement." https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/talkingtech/2018/05/15/facebook-having-trouble-fighting-hate-speech/611702002/

The nature of shadow bans and the power of algorithms to control the free flow of information can be quite pernicious, particularly as they quite often operate beneath the surface and below the radar. The ability for government moneyed interests to do this to greater effect and with less accoutability will only increase. That makes it imperative to discuss the many ramifications now. :----: "Murray closed by adding a very brief comment of his own: “There is no room to doubt the evil nature of the expansionist apartheid state that Israel has now become. Nor the moral vacuity of its apologists in the western media.” Since this was, of course, a damning statement about mainstream ‘news’ media in The West, these mainstream ‘news’ media, including Facebook, can be expected to dislike that — and they evidently do. On April 25th Murray headlined "Blocked By Facebook and the Vulnerability of New Media”, and he reported: This site’s visitor numbers are currently around one third normal levels, stuck at around 20,000 unique visitors per day. The cause is not hard to find. Normally over half of our visitors arrive via Facebook. These last few days, virtually nothing has come from Facebook: What is especially pernicious is that Facebook deliberately imposes this censorship in a secretive way. The primary mechanism when a block is imposed by Facebook is that my posts to Facebook are simply not sent into the timelines of the large majority of people who are friends or who follow. I am left to believe the post has been shared with them, but in fact it has only been shown to a tiny number. Then, if you are one of the few recipients and do see the post and share it, it will show to you on your timeline as shared, but in fact the vast majority of your own friends will also not receive it. Facebook is not doing what it is telling you it is doing – it shows you it is shared – and Facebook is deliberately concealing that fact from you. Twitter have a similar system known as “shadow banning”. Again it is secretive and the victim is not informed. I do not appear to be shadow banned at the moment, but there has been an extremely sharp drop – by a factor of ten – in the impressions my tweets are generating." https://russia-insider.com/en/media-criticism/top-uk-journalist-craig-murray-blocked-facebook-after-criticizing-israel/ri23351?fbclid=IwAR18EDuyaDSrosL6LjEP8T4g4v3FBkKhZad3WUZHB8BST_wdr1mJG9tge3s#.Wv-sf0L82Hs.twitter

And this. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7Lh93e21DAc My guess is that the Russian collusion claims will amount to little (we should know soon). I have no doubt that Trump helped launder money for the Russian mafia (with the knowledge and help of his sons and Kushner), and that Putin is aware of same which certainly would provide some leverage. But a handful of nutty Facebook ads from a little web startup looking for business (memes like, "Vote Trump, or Satan wins") is not what derailed Hillary and her massive campaign warchest. The Hillbots I encounter roll their eyes dismissively anytime the argument/rationale of "both sides" is put forth, most often to justify or minimize some reprehensible behavior by the right. This is quite often valid. But what is important to me, far beyond any case of "gotcha!," is pointing out the reality of "both sides" lying to us. It is most predictably assessed in terms of the extent of the lies ("Trump lies all the time on things both critical and trivial, whereas lies from the left are not so egregious, and besides are an integral part of the political game"), in addition to the reaction to them based entirely on if they are by "your team" or not. To paraphrase Malcolm X, 'I am for truth, no matter who is telling it.' As rationalists especially, so should we all.
