I have started to replace ‘I am sorry’ with ‘thank you for understanding I.
brentan comments on Dec 19, 2018:
I might be tempted because I'm pretty sure I'm somewhat autistic. But really, what the heck would I apologise to the 'neurotypicals' for when they are steadily reducing civilisation to ashes? I don't know what your 'weakness' is but you need to tell me why your weakness is perhaps pathological and everyone else's is justifiable.
Some things you have to experience for yourself to truly understand, not everything can be ...

brentan comments on Dec 19, 2018:
I heard that men learned to exploit other people's vulnerabilities after learning about his own. I think that's also the reason why education didn't teach us to appreciate each other through understanding, but rather to dislike each other more.
This is beyond outrageous. How is this not unconstitutional?
brentan comments on Dec 18, 2018:
That's a dreadful human right's violation!

"The planet is fine, the people are fucked" ---George Carlin
brentan comments on Dec 17, 2018:
I think the planet is ok but could be better. We're about as good as we can be because it's not that long since we were apes.We have become very inward-looking animals and self-critical. With our comfortable lifestyles and high-falutin religious values we are always focussing on how better life might be if we were closer to moral perfection. We should appreciate that in the luckier parts of the world, life is very good.

The gilets jaunes can't say what the protest is about because of political correctness so they claimed it was about the price of fuel. The French government can't say what the protest is about because it might inform the public about political issues so they claim it is about extremist thugs.

brentan comments on Dec 12, 2018:
No, I don't. I hadn't heard of them. I had started turning the light on early in the afternoon to try to inject some brightness into these dreary Irish winters. I must check out light boxes online and see what they look like.

We get sentimental/guilty around Christmas but the new year will be the same for homeless people.
This sums up rather well a heated conversation I had with someone on FB.
brentan comments on Dec 10, 2018:
I think a lot of people think it means they are not just right, but righteous to boot.
Having an especially hard time right now.
brentan comments on Dec 10, 2018:
I'm sorry to hear this and I can empathise to a certain extent. I have a feeling you'll be in a large group here who will find the Christmas season a challenge. Many of us won't have many others to talk to over this period so maybe we can be of some use to each other. Be strong!
Uh Oh, William Barr [patheos.com]
brentan comments on Dec 10, 2018:
I was reading about Trump's family since they came to America, yesterday on Wikipedia. I was reminded of Michael Corleone in one of the Godfather movies telling a senator 'We're all part of the same hypocrisy, senator'. I dread to think what the public will do when they finally wake up to the fact that they are being encouraged to do right so as to clear the field for those who want to do wrong.
A good interview with Jordan Peterson.
brentan comments on Dec 10, 2018:
That's Marian Finucane, one of our Irish media veterans. She's not the worst by any means. I think she was really out of her depth and it helped in a way, because she was forced to ask all the 'stupid' questions. That might have been very helpful for people, like Marian's listeners, who probably had no idea where Peterson was coming from.
Just a thought.
brentan comments on Dec 10, 2018:
Our government always told us that, especially when there were no jobs.
Obviously, I wasn't paying attention..... what's with the "baby it's cold outside" thing?
brentan comments on Dec 10, 2018:
We used to refer to a certain lager popular with women as 'a leg-opener'. There was a very predatory attitude back in the day which was acceptable. It was your job to get sex and her job to stop you. I think this is the big question now: is trying to get a woman drunk so she will be more agreeable to sex the same as spiking a drink or using date-rape drugs?
Christmas is coming, happy holidays !

Poor you! And poor Dad! That's a lot of sorrow. I'm glad life is better for you now.
Do you watch America Unearthed on the History channel?
brentan comments on Dec 10, 2018:
It's so difficult to separate fact from fiction but The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail was a fascinating book! It must be 30 years since I read it, but I think the gist of it regarding modern times is that a Jesus will come from a French family who are descended from Merovingian kings who got their royal status by being descended from Jesus and Mary Magdalene.
"When overseas you learn more about your own country, than the place you are visiting.
brentan comments on Dec 10, 2018:
You have a great opportunity to compare and contrast. You get to see that countries have things in common, such as decency and flaws, and you get to see how different people do different things, and more importantly, why. I didn't end up choosing one culture over another but learned to appreciate both.
Impecunious.
brentan comments on Dec 9, 2018:
It sounds like the name of a Roman goddess. Gilbert & Sullivan were great fun!
I'm watching a video on quantum mechanics and consciousness that I think you will find thought ...
brentan comments on Dec 9, 2018:
That certainly forces you to think! It is very interesting. I'm intrigued by the concept of panpsychism and also that consciousness and matter might be expressions of the same thing. I wonder, though, would quantum mechanics inform us about consciousness or just help us understand the neurophysiology of the brain.

He was probably the last Great American Hero. I'm not surprised he was promoted to the space program.
Something very bad happened tome this morning.
brentan comments on Dec 7, 2018:
Gosh, that must be no joke. It seems like you're a long way, at least psychologically, from 'smelling the roses' or sitting in the park. Something sure is wrong if you're letting telemarketers get to you. They might be shitty people but what an awful way to try to make a living. I wonder how the therapist goes about helping you to help yourself. Does he try to get you to focus on good things, or try to ignore the bad stuff, or something more complex? Also, is there a biological issue too? Maybe the meds need changing if you take them. I do, and I dare not go off them. I hope you find the way forward, or at least share what's happening here for a bit of fellow-feeling, if not a miracle cure.
What is an asshat in your opinion? Don’t google it damnit.

brentan comments on Dec 6, 2018:
Those are fine songs but I couldn't help thinking of the wonderful poetry of Springsteen's Thunder Road and 'the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGBXnw86Mgc The screen door slams Mary's dress waves Like a vision she dances across the porch As the radio plays Roy Orbison singing for the lonely Hey that's me and I want you only Don't turn me home again I just can't face myself alone again Don't run back inside Darling you know just what I'm here for So you're scared and you're thinking That maybe we ain't that young anymore Show a little faith there's magic in the night You ain't a beauty but hey you're alright Oh and that's alright with me You can hide 'neath your covers And study your pain Make crosses from your lovers Throw roses in the rain Waste your summer praying in vain For a saviour to rise from these streets Well now I'm no hero That's understood All the redemption I can offer girl Is beneath this dirty hood With a chance to make it good somehow Hey what else can we do now? Except roll down the window And let the wind blow Back your hair Well the night's busting open These two lanes will take us anywhere We got one last chance to make it real To trade in these wings on some wheels Climb in back Heaven's waiting down on the tracks Oh-oh come take my hand We're riding out tonight to case the promised land Oh-oh Thunder Road oh Thunder Road oh Thunder Road Lying out there like a killer in the sun Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run Oh Thunder Road sit tight take hold Thunder Road Well I got this guitar And I learned how to make it talk And my car's out back If you're ready to take that long walk From your front porch to my front seat The door's open but the ride it ain't free And I know you're lonely For words that I ain't spoken But tonight we'll be free All the promises'll be broken There were ghosts in the eyes Of all the boys you sent away They haunt this dusty beach road In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets They scream your name at night in the street Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet And in the lonely cool before dawn You hear their engines roaring on But when you get to the porch they're gone On the wind so Mary climb in It's a town full of losers And I'm pulling out of here to win.

brentan comments on Dec 6, 2018:
But, but, but....
Does belief in an afterlife adversely affect life on Earth?
brentan comments on Dec 6, 2018:
I think it affected my old religion the Jehovah's Witnesses. They have effectively given up on any efforts to clean up the earth: And the nations were wroth, and thy wrath came, and the time of the dead to be judged, and the time to give their reward to thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and to them that fear thy name, the small and the great; and to destroy them that destroy the earth.- Revelation 11:18.
I'll bet it's not in the book of fiction anywhere

Just heard the sad news that Pete Shelley of the band the Buzzcocks has died this evening at the age...
brentan comments on Dec 6, 2018:
I hated 80s music. Probably because I hated the 80s. I thought it was an utterly spiritually-bereft decade. Groups like Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet with their leather outfits drove me to religion! Now I watch the Top Of The Pops repeats on BBC Four and enjoy them like never before. For some unknowable reason, I really like The Cure these days, despite (or maybe because of) the nihilism.
Any of you out there firm believers in science, logic, and philosophy.
brentan comments on Dec 6, 2018:
