Cleaning up after humans. See a harpoon skewer space junk in orbit [cnn.com]
davknight comments on Feb 16, 2019:
Space junk is a big problem. As of 2000, there were an estimated 250,000 pieces of space junk in orbit around the Earth. Most space junk is in the form of nuts, bolts, wrenches, etc. But some of it is in the form of larger pieces of metal. All of it is dangerous to space craft and satellites. Keep in mind everything in orbit travels at 18,000 miles per hour. The bigger problem is how to get rid of it. One design, still on the drawing board, is for an orbiting 'vacuum cleaner', that will 'collect' it. But that's still tears away from being tested.

What happened after death
davknight comments on Feb 14, 2019:
I fell through the ice when I was a kid. I awoke 3 days later in a hospital. I have absolutely no remembrance of anything that happened in between. No 'tunnel of light'. No 'pearly gates'. No nothing. (Maybe I wasn't "dead" enough?). All I remember is saying "I'm hungry!", and after the doctors got done marveling over my 're-awakening', the nurse brought me a bowl of tomato soup, a tuna sandwich, and a carton of milk. I haven't been out on the ice since. And when I still lived in Michigan, on very cold winter days, I'd get this craving for tomato soup, and a tuna sandwich!

Those walls of theirs certainly aren't going to keep the sans culottes, or the sans domiciles out, if the pooh ever really hit the fan!

Is it okay for an atheist to sing sacred music?
davknight comments on Feb 13, 2019:
Did you know many Christmas carols were actually taken from 17th-century London brothel greeting songs? When you entered one of these establishments, the ladies would sing welcome songs to you. One ditty, we now know as"Hark the Herald Angels Sing" once had very different, and 'naughty' lyrics. The holy rollers lifted the melodies, and changed the lyrics.

davknight comments on Feb 13, 2019:
Norse longhouses in Iceland had rooms attached to one end, with potty seats attached to each wall. The 4-6 seater privies were situated over a stream, which ran through the house at that point. The upstream part was where you got drinking and cooking water from. The downstream part carried away waste water. Both adults and children could use the loo together. And of course, both sexes as well.

The Wyoming Army National Guard used to have a bad habit of crashing their helicopters into the Colorado Rockies. And in response to the question 'are we alone?', I used to say: Supposing some night, an object from above crashed into your neighborhood? The devout would immediately get down on their knees and pray. The atheist would say 'ahh, there aint no UFOs!', and go back to sleep.. The agnostic would say 'Let me get my flashlight, and let's go down and investigate this phenomenon. But I got five bucks it's a helicopter from WANG! And upon approaching the crinkled-up wreckage, and seeing the letters W-A-N-G painted on the side, would say 'See! I told ya so!'

White people can't be terrorists! [youtube.com]
davknight comments on Feb 12, 2019:
'Terrorism' is simply the State's euphemism for poor man's war. And all people are capable of it, if forced into a situation that compels them to react that way. I say 'react', because it is usually a reaction to State terrorism of some kind. The word 'terroriste' comes from the French Revolution, when cells of assassins were out hunting Royalist leaders. As a euphemism for poor man's war, we can credit that to Nazi Germany, which ordered that all mention of European resistance fighters describe them as "terrorists".Bureaucrats that failed to do that were summarily arrested, and imprisoned, or worse. This is the origin of the saying that" One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter".

All we felt in the cab was a minor thud. When we got out to investigate, the owner of the car-- a Pentecostal preacher--came running out of the KFC he'd been in, and started hollering, and cussing to high heaven! It was pretty funny! I'd never heard a preacher cuss like that in my life! (The Mercedes was squashed like a pizza pie!).
