Trump Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop Meeting in Private with Putin | Vanity Fair

Two questions! (1) Has any other American leader ever met in private with leaders of any foreign nation? If the answer is yes then Vanity Fair can go STFU! And EAD! While they’re at it. But if by chance the answer is no then why is it such a fucking problem other than y’all having ...
jerry99 replies on Jan 30, 2019:
@48thRonin Turns out that no, presidents do not EVER meet with foreign leaders without State Dept & US translators present, especially foreign adversaries like Putin. Reason being to have corroboration for refuting any claims and to have State Dept staff aware of what's being discussed. Only this particular shitferbrains president thinks he's entitled to make whatever secret deals he likes without any constraints. The rest of your comment sounds like typical Trumpist bullshit so I'm not interested in anything else you have to say.

Nancy Pelosi just pulled a major power move on Donald Trump's State of the Union - CNNPolitics
Cutiebeauty comments on Jan 16, 2019:
I can't see the article.... Just some sort of menu....
jerry99 replies on Jan 16, 2019:
(CNN)Sometimes the best power moves in politics are conveyed in the most mundane language. "Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29," wrote Speaker Nancy Pelosi to President Donald Trump on Wednesday. Make no mistake: Pelosi's decision to disinvite Trump from delivering his "State of the Union" address to Congress is a total power play designed to remind Trump that a) Congress is a co-equal branch of government and b) his willingness to keep the government shuttered until he gets money for a border wall is going to have impacts on him, too. Just in case you missed that message, Pelosi delivered it again in an interview with CNN's Ashley Killough. "This is a housekeeping matter in the Congress of the United States, so we can honor the responsibility of the invitation we extended to the President," said Pelosi. "He can make it from the Oval Office if he wants." What Pelosi is saying there is, essentially, this: Look, Trump can give a speech if he wants. But we are not giving him the platform of a bipartisan session of Congress to do it unless and until he reopens the government. (House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland went a step further in an interview with CNN's Kate Bolduan Wednesday afternoon, declaring that "the State of the Union is off.")

Manchurian candidate aside, I doubt that he's an actual Russian agent, but I think the odds are pretty good that Putin has some damaging info on him and that he has a serious financial dependency on Russian oligarchs.

I looked up this story -- appears that it's mostly true. Here's what Politifact says: It was Trump’s contractor, not Trump himself, who hired 200 undocumented Polish workers to demolish a building to make room for Trump Tower in Manhattan. Trump said he didn’t know. The lawsuit sought $1 million in damages, and a judge ruled that Trump had to pay $325,000 plus interest. But the case was appealed and before it was retried, Trump settled the case out of court, so it’s unclear how much he ended up doling out. https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/feb/25/marco-rubio/marco-rubio-says-donald-trump-had-pay-1-million-hi/

The other thing to consider is that this has gone way beyond whether a wall is a good idea (it isn't) or how much it's going to cost (way too much) or if it's even feasible (it isn't). The other thing is whether we want to allow an autocratic ruler to make decisions without any checks or balances. We don't live in a monarchy or dictatorship -- we live in a society with elected representatives and with an elected executive who can only make decisions within the scope authorized by Congress. Allowing Trump to have his way on this would be a terrible precedent and we'd be saying we're okay with an out-of-control leader who is able to do whatever he likes.
