When I was attending college they had what was called an FTE or full time equivalent student. Budgets for departments and programs were based on FTEs, as was the pay for some adjunct faculty. I think we need to bring the concept of FTEs into the employment statistics. Two 20 hour per week jobs would be rated as 1 FTE job. Four 30 hour per week jobs would be rated as 3 FTE jobs. This would give us a much more accurate picture of employment.

mcgeo52 comments on Jan 5, 2020:
It comes down to three questions: 1) Did Trump break the law? 2) Are we a nation of equal justice under the law? 3) If Trump broke the law, was it serious enough to warrant impeachment and removal? TL: DR Yes, yes, and yes. Full length answers: **1) **There is no question that Trump asked the Ukrainians to announce an investigation into the Bidens in exchange for the release of the military aid. That was documented in the summary of the call released by the White House, and has been confirmed by statements from various members of Trump's administration, as well as sworn testimony before the House, and recently released emails. But was this a violation of the law? Per 18 USC 201( b ): [Whoever --] ( 2 ) being a public official or person selected to be a public official, directly or indirectly, corruptly demands, seeks, receives, accepts, or agrees to receive or accept anything of value personally or for any other person or entity, in return for: ( A ) being influenced in the performance of any official act; Trump, a public official, corruptly sought the announcement of the investigation, something of value to him and his campaign, in return for the release of the funds. In short, he absolutely violated the law. **2)** If we are not a nation of equal justice under the law, we are well on our way to being a dictatorship. **3) **Does Trump's crime warrant impeachment and removal? Per Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution: "The President, Vice President and all Civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, **Bribery**, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors." Remember 18 USC 201( b )( 2 )? The title of that particular section is, "**Bribery** of public officials and witnesses". The Constitution is clear enough on this point that I agree with kmaz, any further discussion is not even close to debatable.
Wow.

A fairly influential group of Mormon women have issued a statement calling for a fair trial with witnesses. While they addressed it to the Senate in general, they specifically called out their three (as they put it) "co-religionists," Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), and Tom Udall (D-New Mexico). That would be three of the four Republicans necessary to change the rules. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) has indicated that she is not happy with the idea of a trial with no witnesses or evidence. If any of those four break ranks, it will be interesting to see who joins them.

McConnell won’t allow witnesses in Senate trial because they could mean conviction [dailykos.com]
mcgeo52 comments on Jan 1, 2020:
McConnell may not get to call the shots on this. Four Republicans breaking ranks and voting with the Democrats on rules changes would make McConnell pretty much irrelevant. At that point McConnell can sit down, STFU, and cast his one vote on each of the Articles. Schumer, as Minority Leader, can bring a motion to change the rules and there is nothing McConnell can do to stop it. As President Pro Tem of the Senate, Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) will preside over any procedural motions, including rule changes. Chief Justice Roberts will preside over the actual trial. Two changes to the rules are all it would take to end Trump: First, there has to be a fair trial with witnesses and documentary evidence. Second, there has to be a secret vote. And all it takes is four Republican Senators with a modicum of integrity, who are willing to put country ahead of party. Believe it or not, it might not be that hard to find them. A group of Mormon women just published a request for a fair trial with witnesses. And while they addressed the entire Senate, they made it very clear that they were talking to their (as they put it) "co-religionists" and named Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), and Tom Udall (D-New Mexico). These ladies, and the Mormon Church, can make or break the careers of these Senators. That would be three down and one to go. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) has voiced great displeasure at the way McConnell has said he is going to handle the trial. She may be the fourth. And the longer McConnell screws around, there will be just that much more coming out about Trump. There may be more than four Republicans who break with McConnell.

‘Trump is terrified’ and ‘addicted to conflict’: Psychiatrist Justin Frank on the ...
mcgeo52 comments on Dec 24, 2019:
# ‘Trump is terrified’ and ‘addicted to conflict’: Psychiatrist Justin Frank on the president’s mental decompensation ## Written by Chauncey DeVega / Salon December 23, 2019 Donald Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives last week. He is now the third president to be impeached, and will be the first to run for re-election after impeachment. Neither previous impeachment involved the blatant corruption of foreign policy seen in Trump’s apparent plot to extort the president of Ukraine into aiding him in the 2020 election. In the days following Trump’s impeachment new evidence of his wrongdoing has been uncovered. On Friday, a Freedom of Information request by the Center for Public Integrity uncovered documents showing that almost immediately after Trump’s July 25 shakedown conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, military aid to that country was stopped. The Washington Post reported last Thursday that officials within the Trump administration were concerned that on matters regarding Ukraine and Russian interference in the 2016 election, the president has been following the personal dictates of Vladimir Putin. This is further evidence that Donald Trump is doing Putin’s bidding, and working to advance Russia’s interests over those of the United States. Donald Trump may be stained by another singular “distinction” as well. Because Republican senators have already promised to ignore any and all evidence against Donald Trump — ensuring that under no circumstances will he be convicted and removed from office — Speaker Nancy Pelosi has not yet forwarded the articles of impeachment to the Senate. If the Republicans refuse to put service to the country and the Constitution over partisan loyalty, then Trump may be impeached for all time, but neither convicted nor acquitted. At the exact moment he was being impeached, Donald Trump was giving a speech at a campaign rally in Battle Creek, Michigan. He followed his usual routine of violent threats, lies, hate-mongering and other repugnant behavior. He raged at Pelosi and the Democrats, calling them “traitors” involved in a “witch hunt” against him. He implied that his opponents, such as the late Rep. John Dingell, a Michigan Democrat, will burn in hell. Trump has recently become obsessed with toilets and human waste, and has trained his faithful to engage in a scatological call-and-response routine. None of this should be surprising. Trump previewed his reaction to being impeached in a hate-filled and threatening letter to Pelosi last Tuesday which leading mental health professionals have described as “psychotic.” Dr. Justin Frank is a former clinical professor of psychiatry at the George Washington University Medical ...

Eventually the establishment types saw what he was accomplishing and started to join in. He won his third term, running against a candidate backed by both the Democrats and the Republicans, with three quarters of the vote. That is why his slogan is, "Not me. Us." He really means it.

Really bad reporting. She says that Mississippi's health care cost is 16% of median income while Massachusetts health care costs 8.4% of median income, which she says is about half that amount. Sounds really terrible until you run the percentages against median household income. Mississippi: $43,529 x 16% = $6964.64 (7% higher) Massachusetts: $77,385 8.4% $6500.34 Almost twice? Hardly. While 7% of a large enough number can be significant, it is almost within the margin of error.
