mcgeo52 comments on Feb 25, 2019:
@clarkatticus, your statement is seriously at odds with the facts. DWS did not resign as Chair of the DNC on the first day because she was having a bad hair day. She resigned because the emails proved she had help rig the primaries. And when the DNC was sued for running unfair primaries, they did not argue the primaries were fair. They argued that they were not legally required to run fair primaries. Not only did Bernie get screwed, but DWS,HRC, and the DNC screwed the entire country. My question, based on what I have seen on Agnostic.com and Facebook, is how many Hillbots will do their best to destroy Bernie instead of working to beat Trump?

Now Bernie Sanders has announced his intention to run in 2020.
mcgeo52 comments on Feb 19, 2019:
If you are blaming Bernie for Hillary's disaster of a campaign, you need to get your facts straight. In spite of the fact that Hillary did absolutely everything she could to alienate anyone who supported Bernie, his campaign staff and many of his volunteers tried to help Hillary. She basically refused their help and refused to listen when they tried to warn her she was in trouble in the key swing states. She was so damned certain that she was entitled to the Presidency that she also refused to listen to her husband when he tried to tell her that she needed to campaign in the swing states. Bernie would have beaten Trump in 2016 according to all of the polls. As long as the DNC doesn't rig the nomination to give us their Worst. Possible. Candidate. again, I'm not worried about Trump winning.

As much as I dislike Trump, I absolutely agree with this as far as it goes. I don't know if there will ever be enough evidence to convince Trump's die hard supporters that he has to go. But when his popular support is below 25% it would make sense to bring the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate. At that point we would either get rid of Trump or any Senator voting for him and running for re-election. Don't expect this to happen, and if it does it probably won't be until next year after the next round of filing and paying taxes under the Republican tax bill. The reason I don't expect it is that I believe Trump may well resign before then.

In 1984 Detroit was producing nothing worth buying. I bought a VW Rabbit GTI and my neighbor who had two Jeeps gave me a hard time about not buying American. I walked him over to his Jeeps, had him open the driver's door on each, and read the plate stating where the car was made. Both of them were from Canada. Then we walked back to the GTI to check it. The plate said "Made in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania". The fit, finish and overall quality of that GTI was as good as any car on the market at the time, including BMW and Mercedes. And it was a blast to drive. It was not that American workers were incapable of making a good car. And the VW factory was unionized, so you couldn't blame the unions. Detroit died because of bad management.
This is a fucking win? Boy brings my piss to a boil. Please see.

What was your most absurd first date?
mcgeo52 comments on Feb 8, 2019:
As far as the most absurd, it would probably be when I was doing graduate work in Environmental Studies. There was a young lady, an undergrad senior, in one of the 400 level classes. We became friends during the first few months of the school year and I invited her to go to the Holiday play being produced by the drama department at the end of the quarter. Shortly after I picked her up at her place she asked me to please not drive so fast. I may have been two or three miles over the posted limit, but it was nowhere near an excess speed. She explained that she would be much more comfortable if I would keep it down to about 5 mph under the limit. I knew then and there that this would be our first and last date. At the time I was widely regarded by friends as an expert on beating speeding tickets. But that just sets up the really absurd part of the date. We had finished a nice dinner and were almost to the campus when a Sheriff's car pulled up next to us at a traffic light. I pulled off the light and cruised at 5 mph under the limit to the next light, where I turned into the campus. When I noticed the deputy following me, I said, "We're about to be stopped." Sure enough, before I finished saying it I saw the lights and heard the siren. I immediately pulled into the angle in parking and the deputy pulled into the space on my right. He came around my car and asked for my license. I handed it to him but could not see his face because I was driving a small '73 Honda Civic and he was over 6'. I asked what the problem was since I knew I wasn't speeding. He said he was just checking who was on the road, and asked where we were going? I informed him we were going to the play in the campus theater. He wished us a good evening and handed my license back. My date asked, "What was that all about?" I didn't have an answer. Shortly before intermission there was a terrible pun in the script. It got quite a few groans, but I burst out laughing. My date looked at me and said, "It wasn't that funny." I replied, "That's not what I was laughing at. I'll explain at intermission." A few minutes later I told her I was laughing because I had figured out why we had been pulled over. It had taken a while but I had finally recognized the Deputy's voice. He was the same one who had pulled me over four times before, and the reason he stopped us was that I was diving so slow he thought someone might have stolen my car. That may sound far fetched, but the same Deputy taught a Monday afternoon Civics class at the local junior high. My sister was in his class; the first time he called roll he asked if she was related to me (McCalip is not a common last name? We have the technological ability to completely replace fossil fuel within less than four years with plant based fuel. Place organic material in a chamber from which the oxygen has been evacuated and super heat it. This process, known as pyrolysis, yields 10% gas, 15% carbon coke, and 75% sludge. The gas is a mixture of butane, methane and propane. We know how to process and use those gases. The coke can be burned to fuel the process (i.e., the process is exothermic unlike producing methanol). The sludge is indistinguishable from a medium light, sweet crude oil and can be run through most refineries. If you put the refractors (i.e., the pyrolysis units) at the refineries, you can replace crude oil pipelines with trains delivering the biomass. The only thing keeping us from doing this is politics. The only plant that produces sufficient biomass to make this feasible is the hemp plant, which only became legal to grow in all 50 states last year.

If you really want to secure the border, the wall is a bad joke. And since illegal immigration is at a 45 year low, I don't see the value of "solving" a problem that basically isn't there. Not to mention that over half of illegal immigrants enter the country legally and then overstay their visas. The wall does exactly nothing to stop that. If anything, it diverts resources away from addressing the real issue.

I have a general question for this group.
mcgeo52 comments on Jan 13, 2019:
You are asking a question based on three assumptions: 1) Trump is gone. 2) Pence isn't and becomes President. 3) The shutdown is still in effect. **IF** that is the case, Pence would probably agree to sign the bill passed unanimously by the Senate in December, and recently passed by the House. I would imagine that would be done in less than 24 hours. I emphasized "IF" because I doubt that will happen. I am almost certain Trump will be gone this year. I am also as certain that Pence will be gone first. Remember, Manafort has already confessed to colluding with the Russians regarding the election. Manafort was also the one who engineered the choice of Pence as VP, and used Pence as the point man in getting the Republican party platform on Ukraine changed. Pence was also the one lying to cover for Mike Flynn, and Flynn has been cooperating fully with Mueller. I doubt that Mueller has any desire to see two Presidents resign in disgrace back to back. As for point three, I doubt that the shutdown will stay in effect for more than another month, max. There will be far too much pressure on Congress to pass it and over ride Trump's veto. Plus, after Cohen's testimony on February 7th (if not sooner), Trump's base will begin to fall apart.

My assumption from day one has been that Mueller had access to any and every thing the NSA had, and has known the real truth the entire time. Mueller's life has been dedicated to fighting enemies of this country, and the majority of that has been fighting organized crime. Go back and read Mueller's speech on organized crime that he gave eight years ago. He had taken down John Gotti and the Gambino crime family. He knew what was filling that void. There are 800,000 federal workers not being paid. Figure that each of them strongly influences the votes of at least three other people (e.g., a spouse, a child or two, a sibling or two). That is 3.2 million votes, or enough to easliy swing a Presidential election. And then there are all of the government contractors who are also being hurt by this. That could easliy double the 3.2 million. The Republicans in Congress have no desire to be on the wrong side of that. Trump has put himself in a no win situation. If he doesn't give in on the wall, the Republicans in Congress will have to override his veto if they want any possibility of getting reelected. Once it is absolutely obvious that Trump will not get his wall, his base will begin to crack and leave him. At that point, he might as well start packing.

You may have some that actually had time to ripen before being picked. It's rare but it happens. I would wager that well over 99% of the people in this country do not consistently get properly ripened fruit and vegetables. One of my favorite things to eat is a properly ripened mandarin orange/tangerine. Unless you have access to a tree to pick them yourself, you have probably never had one. It will literally fall off the tree into your hand and the skin doesn't have to be peeled off, merely opened. Unlike the acidic taste you probably associate with the fruit, when properly ripened it tastes almost as sweet as candy. The "problem" with properly ripened fruits and veggies is that they don't have sufficient "shelf life to survive until they get to market and are sold.
Relax... it's all good.
