There’s much to agree with in the professor’s observations here. And consider this, it’s only the foreign policy part. Our disassociation from reality is just as profound on the domestic side of the house, perhaps more so.

p-nullifidian comments on Dec 23, 2021:
All this bullshit is over 150 years old. It’s almost low hanging fruit. Scientology, for example, has clearly “improved” on the inherent insanity of religion, but any so-called religious faith contains elements of a break with reality—something beyond the natural. Religion requires that we suspend our disbelief regarding the natural chain of cause and effect, buy into the narrative that is being sold, and insert some sort of miraculous, if not supernatural, element! This abhorrent fact was clear to Robert Green Ingersoll, “The Great Agnostic,” who so poignantly observed in the late 1800’s: “Every religion has for its foundation a miracle—that is to say, a violation of nature—that is to say, a falsehood.” In other words, every religion is based on lies!

Heck, this one got me thinking... Is intelligence really simply an accident of evolution?
p-nullifidian comments on Dec 19, 2021:
Success may be defined in a number of ways. Homo sapiens have arisen to the top of the food chain, however we have only been around for maybe a few hundred thousand years—a small blip in the history of our planet—so it’s probably too early to claim success for our species. There can be little doubt that cleverness conferred a survival advantage, but will it be enough in the long run? All the intelligence in the world may not save us from our own self-destructive behaviors, or perhaps the next comet or meteor that extinguishes nearly all life on the planet. And putting on my political science hat, intelligence is not necessarily the best quality in a democracy, particularly when the majority of the electorate do not value intelligence as a positive attribute.

p-nullifidian comments on Dec 18, 2021:
“Nature, so far as we can discern, without passion and without intention, forms, transforms, and retransforms forever. She neither weeps nor rejoices. She produces man without purpose, and obliterates him without regret. She knows no distinction between the beneficial and the hurtful. Poison and nutrition, pain and joy, life and death, smiles and tears are alike to her. She is neither merciful nor cruel. She cannot be flattered by worship nor melted by tears. She does not know even the attitude of prayer. She appreciates no difference between poison in the fangs of snakes and mercy in the hearts of men. Only through man does nature take cognizance of the good, the true, and the beautiful; and, so far as we know, man is the highest intelligence.“ Robert Green Ingersoll, “The Gods” (1872)

There’s probably only one person on the planet whose ego gets a bigger woodie over such an “award!” There was a time in US history when CEOs did not seek public attention (some still don’t) but that all changed with the so-called celebrity CEO. From Jack Welch to Lee Iacocca to Steve Jobs to Jeff Bezos and Elon musk, four unknown reasons, our society fawns over these egotistical jerks as if we needed them. Well, we really don’t, and the sooner we realize that the better off we’ll be! The world doesn’t need assholes in order to grow and improve. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. In his excellent book “The No Asshole Rule: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn’t,” management science professor and author Robert I. Sutton observes, “Winning is a wonderful thing if you can help and respect others along the way. But if you stomp on others as you climb the ladder and treat them like losers once you reach the top, my opinion is that you debase your own humanity and undermine your team or organization.” Sutton summarizes his research with the following statement that most of us probably have said at one time or another, “Life is too short to put up with assholes.”

Boebert knows how to pander to her base, the vast majority of which is rural western Coloradans. The most controversial thing about her Christmas picture for her constituents will be her son’s wearing of a Green Bay Packers hoodie instead of a Denver Broncos one! I have no idea when Christmas portraits with an entire family holding guns became a thing, but if you’re going to allow your children access to weapons, you sure as hell better be responsible gun owners and teach firearms safety!
This was my experience.
p-nullifidian comments on Dec 7, 2021:
An excellent quote! It was my discovery of Robert Green Ingersoll that prompted me to go back and read the Bible one last time, a chore that finally and convincingly sealed the deal on my unbelief. “All that is necessary, as it seems to me, to convince any reasonable person that the bible is simply and purely of human invention—of barbarian invention—is to read it. Read it as you would any other book; think of it as you would of any other; get the bandage of reverence from your eyes; drive from your heart the phantom of fear; push from the throne of your brain the cowled form of superstition—then read the holy bible, and you will be amazed that you ever, for one moment, supposed a being of infinite wisdom, goodness and purity, to be the author of such ignorance and of such atrocity.“ Robert G. p-nullifidian comments on Dec 7, 2021:
I have not seen anyone advocating “forced” vaccination. If such a policy were attempted it would seem unlikely to be upheld by the courts. Bodily autonomy is bodily autonomy, whether we’re talking about abortion, suicide, or vaccination. Individuals still have the right to refuse to be vaccinated, however the group (society) also has the right to take reasonable measures to protect itself from the spread of the disease. Such measures would include mask mandates in public places and disallowing full participation for those who remain unvaccinated. People who willfully ignore public health guidance and engage in risky behavior cannot be allowed the same privileges that the rest of us enjoy. And as an employer, I have the right to protect my team and my customers from anyone (employee, vendor or customer) who refuses to comply with our workplace safety policies. I see no inconsistency in bodily autonomy here.
