Hi all. I'm new here and I had planned on keeping to myself with my views so that I didn't come across as pontificating to make my personal point. When I found this site I was so happy that I would be surrounded (hopefully) by folks who had evolved or progressed to the same sphere in which I exist. My journey with religion/Jesus/god started as most children raised in a Christian home. When your mom tells you to say your prayers, you happily comply because she promises that god hears you and will answer them. Fortunately, my dad was mute on the topic and my mother wasn't at all extreme but her influence was ever so strong. Of course I believed in GOD all through my childhood, feeling that I was being "watched" daily by the man in the sky. I rarely remember going to church so we weren't forced to do that either. Fast forward to my adult years....attending college and being challenged intellectually was my break through moment. I had questioned the existence of a higher power but wasn't able to allow it in my head because everyone else believed in this nonsense so I thought I better too. Then it happened; I had to write an essay on the topic of why one believes anything (general). The discussion followed in class and I answered my own questions....the reason we believe anything is because of our indoctrination by our care givers/parents which is the strongest influence in our life. The catch is; they are PEOPLE raised by other PEOPLE. They know NO more if there is a god than I do so whatever they told me, I believed. Aha! I was free. I could finally live my truth without guilt. I came out of the god closet soon after and have since felt a sense of wonder about why folks need to cling to the belief. I don't judge them and I certainly don't care if they do or don't believe. I figure if it is serving a purpose in your life, that is wonderful for you. What is it about god that you believe and why? Why can't you just be a good, loving human being without worrying about someone watching or approving of you? I know I'm going to die and be gone. I don't have a problem with that. IF by chance I am wrong, then I will go where ever the others go b/c it is my understanding that God is all forgiving. So, I plan on doing the best work to improve human relations while I'm alive. Can you share your journey with me? I never get a chance to discuss this issue with anyone because it is such a taboo subject and I don't want to start in on religion bashing in a group of friends. Thank you for letting me share here. God bless you! (couldn't resist) 🙂

Welcome and, as others have said, please feel free to share/discuss/question. We all have different backgrounds that have had different effects on who we are/were. That diversity strengthens us as a community and helps in our growth. I am sometimes envious but always very happy to hear of people who didn't have religion as the core of their life, especially in childhood. It seems as if it makes it easier for them to ponder about religion and its effects without having to first segregate their minds from the associated strong emotion and feelings everytime.

I liked your comment, but you realise this is an agnostic site.

Uhoh. Im atheist. Well, atheist pagan. Do i need to be agnostic instead?

@Ringo6

Don't tell people to lighten up.

I've had my fill of theists on this site, disguised as atheists... Only to start proselytising later because their whole purpose is to convert atheists.

I've seen it happen.

@Ringo6

There you go. Freedom to say what we both like.
