Technical people - Who knows about SatNavs? Mine keeps cutting out completely in the middle of a drive. I've bought a new cable but no difference - anybody know what it could be? Do I need to "reboot" it or something? Or fork out for a new one? Or have I just worn the damn thing out - do they get tired/overheated?

You should just use Google maps on your phone.

Mmm - I don't have enough data.

@GoldenDoll in 2018 it is important to get unlimited data plans as much of what we do to make our lives easier, such as navigation, relies on being connected to the digital infrastructure. SatNavs are unreliable and cannot provide the extra creature comforts awarded by programs like google maps.

@GoldenDoll additionally, having extra hardware in your car can lessen the comfort of your vehicle. Since you are already bringing your phone with you, it would be one less device necessary for travel if you exclude your satnav. Just my 2 cents.

@Bagger_Vince I agree with you completely. But I also like paying £5 a month for my phone, and most of the time that suits me just fine. Unlimited data deals in England are over £30 a month, and I'd rather spend that money on another holiday. When I first started driving to Italy from England 20 years ago, I used maps. Maps made of paper. MAPS! Can you imagine? And it was all fine. And my car isn't comfortable to start with, so a little satnav won't really make a difference. No doubt my kids will sort me out with unlimited data soon, but in the meantime, I'm keeping my data to myself. But thanks. Oh, and as for creature comforts, I'm fine too - I've got a dog.XXX

@GoldenDoll what's a paper map?

@Bagger_Vince Ha!

I had one that starting winking out on me and it turned out that I needed to update it buy plugging it into my computer. When it synced up it gave me a site to go to. But I must say that stand-alone GPS devices are obsolete compared to mobile phones now. Try to sync it for updates or chuck it if it won't work.

@Texasrunner OK - it has said it needs updating for some time now but I've always ignored it - I'll have to buy another cable to plug it in to the computer though! Don't have that with me.....How boring!

I know, I know - my kids tell me the same. But I'm a little old lady and used to a satnav. What can I say. I find all of this so boring I just want to push a button & go. And I don't have enough date for it to gobble up on my phone.

@Texasrunner Only a couple of problems there -

  1. I'm in the middle of nowhere in the fricking Italian countryside where the nearest bread shop is a twenty minutre drive away, so finding a cable will be a whole day deal, and a very long drive. Totally no chance of ordering anything off Amazon and expecting to be delivered here.

  2. I leave on my return drive to England in a couple of weeks, so we don't have time to send and send back anything, except probably a few thankyous for you ideas! But I will trek out to find a shop which sells cables (BORING! I could be lying by the pool reading a book!), and let you know if it works. Thanks for the link. X

Make? Model? What do you mean by "cut out"? Loses satellite link? Turns off completely? Have you checked the battery level indicator before it "cuts out"? If you use it on batteries, the batteries in all electronic things will eventually "age" or wear out. Most folks just use Waze or Google Maps on their phone these days.....

OK thanks, yes it could be battery trouble... It works for a while then randomly cuts out completely, and sometime randomly switches itself off again, sometimes I have to fiddle with the wire/connections/on off switch. Incredibly boring!

did you try it in another car?

That's a good idea - I thought it might be something to do with the connections in my car, heaven knows what's been spilt in there... All I have to do now is find a friendly Italian with a car who'll do a long trip with me, as it has only happened quite a way into a trip so far.....

@GoldenDoll any other nationality would do also. There is nothing stopping a Canadian from going with you. Lol

@Science-guy Not anything but Italians here. Middle of nowhere in the middle of Italy. A Canadian would have a bit of a trek....

@GoldenDoll ahhhh! Ok. Italian it is then! Lol.

Here's a link with reboot instructions, although you didn't give details on the brand.

Maybe your satelite took a dive and burnt up ?

Gosh, you're really clever.

@GoldenDoll
Thanks, I think so too ! LOL

@VAL3941 - I'm afraid sarcasm isn't your thing then.

@McVinegar
Yeah, illegal ones !

@GoldenDoll
You don't know me long enough to make that assumption !

@VAL3941 I have no wish to know you. But thanks for the offer.

@GoldenDoll
Wasn't offering, but thanks for declining !
