Depression is a symptom with causes that vary, somewhat like anemia. Without knowing anything about a person, even a wild guess seldom hits the mark. I used to get depressed once in awhile. It was usually the easily identifiable kind called 'anger turned inward' unrelated to things like disability or addictions.

Anger happens pretty commonly as a result of frustration from unrealized expectations, sometimes exascerbated by ingratitude. I found one good remedy by accident.

Suffering depression after walking away from everything material connected with a marriage many years ago; I was riding a bus to work and was running late. Sitting there silently cursing the buses for always being behind schedule it happened!

The beeping sound! Whenever the bus was taking on a person in a wheelchair a little platform SLOWLY extended. The driver had to get out of his/her seat, wrestle the chair into place, secure it with a belt and then FINALLY resume driving! Boy was I pissed now being even later.. Suddenly while regarding that poor young soul bound to a chair, I felt internally embarrassed and really ungrateful. Would I ever in ten lifetimes switch places with him? Being merely late for work shrunk to insignificance. Loss of my car, house and the illusion of them being meaningful at all disappeared; especially knowing that I, unlike the other passenger, would be able to replace them soon. During the rest of the ride new eyes recognized others on that bus with physically apparent barriers that I didn't have.

It has stayed with me as a reusable remedy in times of frustration. I've learned that anger management is mis-named. Actually expectation management and gratitude management head-off necessity for it. That includes anger at self.

My case as mentioned was about depression not complicated by other issues.

I'm sorry I've been there. Talk to your Dr. And take care of yourself.

I am glad you are not suffering in silence.
Changing routine, exercise, socializing and prescriptions are all possible aids.
You're not alone.

I'm sorry to hear that, hopefully you will find this community to be somewhat helpful.

Hi Robert, I am sorry you are depressed. Hopefully you will feel better before long.

Depression is not fun. But not everything has to be, sometimes the little raindrops can be a gentle mood that brings quiet and eventually allows you to be yourself again. Relax, don't force yourself, and try to spend time on the things that bring you some good feelings. Like going to feed the ducks, or going for a walk.

did you know that over half of all long-term depressions are helped as much by by a regime of running and meditation than by antidepressants? Pills are often not the answer.

Antidepressants could be very effective. Ever since I stopped taking meds and worked on diet and physical exercise I find myself slipping into many mini depressive episodes. When I was on medication , that never happened. Drugs aren't always the answer but they're not the enemy either.

@Kojaksmom that is true, medication has its place

@Denker I am thinking about taking up drinking .

@Robert56 it’s not something I would usually advise for depression 🙂 alcohol is a sedative, it slows you down and while it gives a small high it’s very temporary, and before you know it you are hitting the rebound.

If you suffer from the types of depression I get from time to time, take solace in knowing it will pass. To speed up its passing, try to do the things that we know help depression. Even though you likely don't want to, DO get some recreation outside in the daylight if possible. Write out your feelings or have a heart to heart talk with someone who knows you well. If you're totally on your own, get out where there are people. Do a good deed, compliment folks, make someone smile... Hopefully you'll be feeling more like yourself soon.

Hi, Robert,

They say that CBD oil stops depression and also heals many serious issues, such as seizures.

Other stop gap measures..take a long walk at dawn to reset your thyroid for elevated mood and energy, eat fish, put a few drops of food grade iodine in your drink, also listen to upbeat favorite music since studies show it's as effective for raising the mood as antidepressants.

You can take 5-htp, magnesium, St. John's Wort-all found at WalMart, and cheap. Powdered Mexican Sarsaparilla (root beer powder) also raises the mood, and stimulates the body to produce more testosterone, if it's low.

Get a cuddly pet, watch funny Netflix shows, avoid highly processed food as the additives can affect people.

By the way, when you feel like dating, you earn website points, and help other members get to know you better, when you upload a recent photo of just you, write an informational profile that includes your hobbies and interests, and answer all the profile questions, since that's the first place many women look when they see a new member.

Also, the website uses your profile to find member matches, so the more details you include, the better the match.

You make comments and write your own posts to earn more points and privileges; for instance, at level two you can private email people. You get different perks with each level, and when you reach level eight you get an agnostic T-shirt.

...don’t know if you’ve come to the right place for advice.. But you’re not alone. Though, those of us giving personal suggestions can and may be ‘jumped on’ or ridiculed for describing what ‘works for us’ 😕 As we’ve only dealt with it, yet have no educational credentials..

Hang on, I’ve found it worth the effort. I’d just focus and continue digging. It helped having children, you’ve got to be there for them (whether it appears they want or need you).. If not, there must be an element of freedom allowing for as massive a change as necessary to shake it.

I’d describe my situation to professionals, they’d agree, and we’d both be sad! I’ll assume drugs of some sort can help. Well, if you’re here - you’re a worthwhile human being that I want to know remains among our ranks - so do all you can to recover and move forward, for the cause ~
