Oh no. I'm not heading down the defeatest rabbit hole. I understand the reality of the world, and do what I can in my work and personal life.

What do you do to effect/affect the the change you want to see?

(Edited: I have a hard time with affect and effect. No really, I over think it every time. I appreciate the call for correction.)

I talk about politics.

Every day we wake up to the voice of the ruling class, albeit filtered. It's why the ruling class own the media. So I try to fight back a little.

@Stacey48

Thank you for that.

I would like to see the return of civility, decency and integrity. So I try to be a good example to promote the cause.

I volunteer at a free breakfast program and at a homeless shelter.

Show love, reason and kindness. Speak out, speak the truth, protest, resist, and vote.

Carole, every time I see a post of yours, I think it's going to be THE Carole Kay!

@Secretguy Lol! Think of me as the new THE Carole Kay! 😀

@Secretguy Sheesh! You could give me a like. 😀

@CaroleKay I'll give you a "heart".

I contribute to political causes, I vote and donate to charity.

effect not affect

I make people laugh. It's good for them and better for me. 🙂

You MAKE them laugh, is tickling involved? I think we'd change the world if we tickled everyone in congress until they peed their pants.

@educatedredneck My services are not required as they have been laughing all the way to the bank for quite some time.

Let’s see now: on the religion front, I’m a member of FFRF, American Atheist and my favorite charity Foundation Beyond Belief. Someone mentioned ACLU, so I will look into that as well. On the political front, I joined up with my local Indivisible resistance movement to be out front and vocal, for example, the march tomorrow. I have the 5 Calls app on the phone to contact my state representatives. It has been a tiresome and emotionally draining 1.5 years but we got to keep on keeping on.

PS. You were right in thinking “affect”, however, “effect change” is a verb phrase that belongs together and is most appropriate here. Hope that helps 🙂

PS2. Now you have an extra “the” on that line you have to fix 🙂

First, the way i was taught to differentiate between affect and effect is that the one starting with 'a' is an action.

As for the substance of your post, i have been an activist for over 50 years, and started by handing out leaflets for a local Liberal politician in my late teens. I became more involved gradually but i always had the passion to contribute to positive change as i defined it. I marched in many protests, helped organize more than a few, and eventually became a leader as i moved into my 30s and 40s. The fact that i worked for a daily newspaper for about 15 years helped me do what i was committeed to changing.

But as i moved into my 70s, i seemed to have less energy than i needed to be on the front lines, also believing i could affect change through social media, leaving the front line stuff to those younger than i am. I help all i can but always in the background these days.

I believe that if we all do what we can, we can create a better world. We can all be change agents if we choose to be. But positive change won't happen until we reach that tipping point where enough people care to do something about injustices, inequities, divisiveness, and the rape of our planet.

@Stacey48 Thank you for your kind words. They make me feel good. When there are so many negative models out there bombarding us, like our politicians too often, i try to show that there are preferable options. That's why i personalise, trying to stay away from preaching or intellectualising. Most of the time i succeed, i hope. hahaha Thanks again, Stacey

I discuss and vote. I fuck up those two words occasionally myself. ☺

2

That meme very well sums up the human problems we all face.
I VOTE.
I strive to NEVER do to anyone what I would NOT want done to me.
I too have a hard time with those 2 words and have to give them careful thought.

@Stacey48 YES. But I can effectively deal with the affects of both.

2

I meditate a ton and try to focus on my own emotions while acknowledging I cannot control what others think or do.

From there, I think of what impact I can have on other people...but I've mostly ruled out murder and rotten tomatoes.

1

I try to educate those who want to learn.
Like with "race", for instance.
There is really only one race, the human race.
The rest was created to divide people that aren't "just like them".

I am that awful person who turned off the alarm, rolled over, went back to sleep, and didn't attend the ICE protest this morning. I feel so guilty.

1

The effect that one's affect has on their outlook can affect their demeanor. I just made that up. At one time I had it down but now I'm like you, I have to toss it around a dozen times..

I think you are on the right track in doing what you can. Gandhi said it best:

Damn so true, i wish i could post this on my Facebook page lols,

@Stacey48 im not surprised by that Lols

@Stacey48 some can be totally pointless and annoying

You stick to your principles, treat all fellow human beings with respect regardless of creed or colour, try to show kindness and tolerance even in the face of provocation, help those less fortunate, be a good citizen, respect the laws of the land especially when visiting other countries, protect the weak, look after our environment, don‘t hunt and kill wild animals. Even though it may seem like an impossible task to make this world a better place, knowing this life on earth we are living now is the only one we will ever have must be an incentive to try to make it happen.

@Stacey48 You are more than welcome. I’ve been around a while and have had a long time to form my opinions.

1

I vote and contribute to worthy causes. And, as I did on 08, if there is a candidate for President that's worth it, I will work for the campaign.

1

Literally, the only thing a person can do is live their made purpose. That is all a single person is capable of doing with any success; reality is so much bigger than a single person.

@Stacey48

Yeah that's consistent, I don't have a problem with that idea.
