I really feel like I'm going to drop out of college. I'm not making the grades I want no matter how hard I study. My dream is to become a dental hygienist but I feel like it's slipping further and further away from me.

Have you thought about going through a different way of study? Is it possible the way you are going about it isn't clicking with you? Have you been tested for some sort of learning disability or perhaps looked into different ways to go about it? If you drop without at least checking you might always wonder if there was something different you could have done to make it work.

Now if you really are done, I wouldn't fight it. I know I wasn't collage material. The pace and demands and structure is just too much. The number of people is also too much, too distracting. (Did that just scream introvert or what??) So I can safely say I get it IF that's the issue.

At any rate, you do what is good and right for you. If it turns out to be another route outside of college, or maybe just that you need a little more time before the rigors of collage, then so be it.

If school has always been a challenge for you, you may have a learning disability. Colleges have accessibity offices to help with that so you have more time to take exams, write papers, etc. If the problem is that you aren’t excited about the academic program, that’s important to identify. Maybe you aren’t challenged enough!

Funny story I want spent three years in college as a young man to be a dental hygienist didn't work out for me but I'm not a dental hygienist I found out at heart sometimes when the door closes you just have to either find another door or crawl through a window to be honest that is a wicked course the only thing I can suggest is that you either join a study group or get a tutor

Those there, and those profiting from what it takes to get ‘there’ have made it increasingly difficult to obtain the credentials to ‘be there.’ I wanted to be a cop, then I didn’t, so stopped college. No degree, but no regrets ..or debts.

You’ll likely find ‘explaining’ your decision to others is far more difficult than accepting it within yourself.. Follow your feelings, and if you’re taking this decision serious, good; that’s an indicator that you’ll continue to look for what’s right for you. Opportunities are out there, find your niche 🙂

Trust me....the problem may not seat on "how hard you try" but in THE METHODS YOU USE TO STUDY.
Many of my former students -now professionals- felt as you do.
Talk to a counselor.

As someone who's quit on a lot of dreams, you live to regret it, and it can eat you up a little bit--or a lot. Especially if you spend the rest of your life doing something you never wanted to do in the first place.

There are a billion reasons that the curriculum isn't tracking with you, and once you figure that out, you'll find it extremely useful. Some people need 'hands on' to get the information. Others need to 'see' the process... There are probably some really great tutorials on YouTube if you know what you're looking for. It was recommended that you work for a dentist--or even volunteer an hour or two.

Do you have friends in the class who will sit with you over lunch and chat about the course?

You are obviously discouraged. It is easy for us to say don't quit. It isn't our tuition money at stake. College is expensive, and not wanting to spend money without getting credit has a certain logic. But whatever you do, you owe it to yourself to investigate what it is that is the obstacle. That is the only way to help your next steps be productive and rewarding. And hopefully, you will find problems with solutions so that you won't have to quit. Definitely seek advice from others who know your field and the college process.

college do you have a counselor you could speak to, or perhaps approach whichever lecturer you like best and discuss how you feel and go over the problem areas on your course. It would really be a great shame if you gave up now, remember that this is your dream and that dream is worth keeping up your studies for. I am quite an old gal so I know what I’m talking about....just hang in there and remember anything worth having in life is worth fighting for!

My wife is a Dental Hygienist. area of study. Unfortunately the field is changing and now she is expected to services to the patients to make the she expected. If you don't mind selling along with performing all the dental procedures you have to learn than stick with it. She makes about $34 per hour in a Detroit suburb, with the potential of $44 once she is fully on commission.
