Do you trust that what you believe to be true, is true? Do you investigate all of your beliefs or do you just go with what sounds correct?

I see a lot of people are claiming that they verify information before they accept it. I'm politely calling bullshit on most of you, most of the time. We're regularly being told things, from friends, news, internet, and the radio. I think some of what is said is probably not true and yet we don't have the time to research everything. There is no doubt we all accept a certain amount of false information on insufficient data as being valid when it's not, and we do this more often than we want to admit.

Until I investigate I keep on back burner.

Everything is predicated on the assumption that the universe is comprehensible and that we have the capacity to understand it. We cannot be certain of this, but from all appearances we exist in a stable universe where the physical properties are consistent and our experiences are reproducible. If the universe isn't comprehensible, then the issue is unimportant because without the scientific method we can know nothing at all with confidence and can judge nothing as valid or not. So, assuming that premise is correct, everything else is a matter of observation and testing to become more confident in what I think is true of the universe, human nature, politics, religion, economy, etc. I cannot be an expert in all things, but I trust in experts' consensus to increase my confidence and rely on their explanations to provide me with a better understanding of the topic at hand. Even if I cannot fully grasp the concepts, I want as strong an understanding of the principles as possible so I have a better shot of identifying specious claims and logical fallacies.

I read, I study, and I think. I don’t assume the truth. I try to find it.

That's were the Agnostic factor comes in.

I just get on with the very real things

Good thread of other ways of thinking.

When I was reading a lot of philosophy and some psychology, I reached a point where I was starting to question everything, my senses even. Our senses are flawed but if it gets to the point of questioning our instincts, which are there for our protection, then it gets flaky. Maybe you didn't intend your question to go that far, so I'll say "yes" I will investigate beliefs and usually it gets to where your sources are limited and you have to draw the best conclusion.

Research as far as I can. After my ability runs out I trust those who make a living investigating things and being held to account by their peers.

every thing that matters .....YES

You know how they say 'one answer brings two more questions'?

Yes, I try to investigate my beliefs and I learn a lot in the process, but as my map of knowledge grows, my awareness of my sphere of ignorance grows even faster!

Someone , I think it was Alan Watts put forward a good illustration of this. Knowledge is like a camp fire. The larger the fire the larger the surrounding darkness of the things we realise we don't know.

We should always examine what we believe for substantiation, rationality, and morality. Do we? Not always.

I used to. Even though I haven't been religious for a long time, it's still easy to take for granted all our society has. I was 30 before I started questioning what I ate, what I was putting in my body. It's still so hard but it is getting easier as more and more people ask the same questions. I have found everything is up for questioning, the history we are taught in school, the society norms which are expected of us. Nothing is sacred!

I research pretty much everything, sometimes I hit a wall in my understanding, like I have with quantum physics but even physicists say if you think you understand quantum physics then you don't. In cases like this I go to multiple reputable sources and see what professional opinions are and then I say "I don't know" but I'm glad someone's working on figuring it out.

There are beliefs --- and there are beliefs. The mundane beliefs serve a purpose for our species and thus are acceptable. They help us navigate the everyday maze we call life and avoid cognitive overload. Beyond that, no beliefs are acceptable and I hold none.

I did for awhile untill it dawned on me that prayers are not getting answered. That the world is a one in a million planet and there's more like it out there. People are nuts. They believe that man made religious artifacts have power. That a preacher says he's talked to god and god told him. It almost knocked me to.my knees when I finally realized all this religion is crap. I'm more aware of things than ever before. I just want to spit that I felt guilty for not going. What a waste of energy.

On important issues or if I see something in a newspaper or facebook news that is significant I will go deeper and look up the references if possible, even download the research papers if they exist. Often I see a story headline and when you read up on it yourself, find out that they exaggerated and that the correlation was only say 0.52, but the way the headline was printed you might have thought the correlation was more like 0.95! Journalists!!

That's why I like reading Snopes. com. to get a general idea as to what kind a BS is doing the rounds today.

The best we can hope for is agreeing what is true beyond a reasonable doubt using the objective evidence available to us. There can be no certainty without omniscience.

Since joining this site I've started researching some political articles.

I investigate (within reason) and try not to get too attached to any of them.

I' m pretty well the same. Not to get too unattached to any one thing, it frees up more my love for everything.

Although my honesty needs a better filter system.
