Does anyone else assume when they're talking to someone new that they're a right-leaning, uber-Christian with whom you will have no connection? Or is that a symptom of living in the Buckle of the Bible Belt?

Not paranoia if it’s true.

@fiferguy You just proved.

Nope, with the exception of a few acquaintances I'm surrounded by liberal Christians. We're in agreement about most issues except the existence of a god.

2

Yes, but I live in Louisiana. If I make a political statement in front of strangers (or among friends whose political views are unknown), I keep it about a specific issue and not about the party or even the politician (beyond their support/antagonism of the issue at hand).

I don't think all right-wingers are bad. Does being agnostic mean you have to be left wing? I'm a middle-of-the-road agnostic with left leaning tendencies but have plenty of Christian and conservative friends. In a relationship it's probably less important to share the same beliefs and more important to respect each others individual beliefs. After all, everything changes with time.

Not at all. And I agree for rational, fairly moderate right wingers. The problem is we have far more extremist right wings here that can’t or won’t have rational discussions about anything.

I agree. However, the left can be just as stubborn. My most liberal friends judge me more than my most conservative which I find very odd. I think the dems have become the moral dictators which I guess if you have to have a dictator I'd rather it be a liberal. The problem is they don't give me a chance to breath. It's like you have to be an activist or your not up to par.

Nah I don’t assume anything unless they bring it up or show it in other ways...and I’m in the middle of the US also so know I am in the political and religious minority.

It's a reasonable way to go into any new acquaintance. Especially in the South.

2

No. The opposite unfortunately.

There are some people on this site who seemed to be OK, only for them to prove otherwise and reveal a right-wing douchebag true self. It's disappointing when that happens.

Thankfully I don’t feel that way. However, I live in NYC, so that’s probably why.

I honestly couldn't tell you, I live in the NC mountains, so...more or less almost everyone I meet IS a right-leaning, neoconservative, undereducated, Trump voting southern Baptist or Methodist who genuinely believes women, Blacks, Mexicans, and/or homosexuals are the cause of all the world's problems.

You can usually spot them because they complain about political correctness.

I don't assume it. But I do know that any bible thumper will find a way to bring up God in conversation fairly quickly. So I know soon enough lol. I have yet to have an atheist or agnostic bring up their lack of believe in conversation. ?

@sweetcharlotte , I completely understand. I'm sure the expression on my face would say it all if a neighbor asked me to pray ?. One of my pet peeves is when people know you're not religious but they keep pushing it.

2

I rarely assume anything.
But to honest, I don't really care if they are believers or not. As long as we keep it civil, and not try and convert each other I'm fine.
In fact some of my best friends are believers and we've been getting along for years. We just simply just talk, laugh, joke, etc. like I would around other non-believers. Although to be fair, most of my believer friends are not really religious at all. and they all understand things like Evolutionary Biology, Big bang theory, Physics. etc.In fact, other than being that a god exists, we pretty much agree about everything. Then again, I am very picky about who I am friends with.

I do when I am in Oklahoma, Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana

Oh and alabama

@Bigwavedave Don't forget Georgia.

@KKGator thanks oh yea and south kakalackey

@Bigwavedave both kackalacks.

@geist171 I know lol I didnt want to talk bad about nc. It's about a 50 50 state.

@Bigwavedave except when it comes to social infrastructure programs or teacher salaries, at which point we're floating just above the bottom of the barrel.

1

I don't think about it one way or another, and l live in Texas.

Mixed bag here in NC urban areas, but down east it's a safe bet.

And down west

@Bigwavedave you got some freethinkers around Ashville, but out around Lenoir, Hickory and Cullowhee, yeah you're right. Boone's cool.

@zeuser lol yep. There are institutions of higher learning in Asheville and Boone...

Nc has charlotte, rdu, Wilmington Asheville and Boone. All blue. Everything else drips crimson red

@Bigwavedave even the areas immediately surrounding the blue areas. Leave Asheville and head through Black Mountain, Old Fort, Marion, Morganton, or if you want to really see it head up the mountain to Avery, Mitchell, or Yancey county. Greensboro is a weird combination of baby boomer neoconservatives and post Gen-X lefties with a pretty heavy LGBTQ community (I thought people were gonna riot when they managed to pass Amendment One) so it sort of balances itself out somewhat.

@Bigwavedave a friend of my mom's who lives primarily in alaska came and stayed with us for a few months when I was living in Spruce Pine, and he was watching the news out of Charlotte (our area doesn't have local news, if you don't have satellite, its still bunny ears up there, we get stations from Charlotte or South Carolina somewhere) and he looked up at me and just said 'what the hell is wrong with the people in this state?' I responded with 'I mean isn't this how the news is everywhere?' He just sort of shook his head. 'No. Florida isn't even this bad.'

@geist171 we're worse than Florida? That stings.

@zeuser that's what I said. And this was DURING the whole Casey Anthony debacle.

Living in Texas, it is not an assumption.

It is when I go. ...πŸ™‚

@Bigwavedave Y'all come on down now ya heah.

@jlynn37 I covered Texas for my company for 5 years . Very successfully. I requested a transfer to the northeast. Best decision I ever made business wise.

@minhmeister I agree . I disnt say all. I just said I assumed anyone I met was. Except for austin.
