I am writing a speech for college students,on how unimportant prayer/religion are to our modern society. Do you know any peer reviewed articles on this subject?
Do you have access to a university library, or even a local library, online? Most libraries have databases you can access to look for research on any given topic.
My suggestion is, instead of saying "prayer/religion IS unimportant," you start with the idea that prayer/religion SHOULD become unimportant, and give reasons why. What are the benefits of choosing to think independently? What are the various dependencies that blind faith enables? What has religion, and religious fervor, cost the world, both in the past and in the future?

Ooops hit the wrong button as usual! Just wanted to finish by reiterating that saying "religion, prayer, etc., is irrelevant," is going to be a tough sell. And anyone who is a believer (doesn't matter what religion) will immediately get defensive. But saying it SHOULD be irrelevant seems to me to be an easier, less confrontational, point to make.
Try to do one without mentioning god, prayer, religion or church to show them how irrelevant they are today.
