Would you rather date someone with opposing political views or opposing religious views?
No views whatsoever if possible...?
I could sooner date a liberal Christian than a conservative.
@PalacinkyPDX totally agree. I was married 22 years to an atheist conservative. Total nightmare.
One need look no farther than Jimmy Carter. One can argue how effective a President he was, but I believe any one who doesn't see what good moral deeds he has done is way off base- heading toward right wing political party before country. At near 90, yes he may teach Sunday school fairy tales; I used to teach Beowulf; he spends his weeks raising money and working to eradicate the African Guinea worm and has nearly done so. He still helps build houses for habitat for humanity.
@Beowulfsfriend agreed!
Neither. Flat out. I'd rather be single forever.
@pinklotus18 I 3rd it. The hell with making my life miserable just to "have" someone. Blech
I wouldn't date either.
I'm not looking to argue with someone all the time.
Religious. I've successfully done that in the past. But political ? - especially now ? After "it" has been in office a while, and we know what he's about ? NO - never happen.
I cannot even conceive of being in a relationship with anyone who supports the current occupant of the White House. I can accept differences of opinion on fiscal policy, foreign relations, and military policy as valid differences of opinion, but I refuse to become involved with someone who supports racism and fascism.
The problem is that these are only 2 of a myriad of reasons I wouldn't go on a 2nd date with someone.
@schway At my 'stage of life' It wouldn't make any difference. That mistake was made with my first wife.
Religious views. catholic girls will do ANYTHING when they get opened up.
atheist here.
Anything? May need details here!
I couldn't date someone with either. I answered all the questions on e harmony years ago and it told me to go back and change my answers that they didn't have a match for me! ?
Hahahahaha. Awesome
That's like making me choose between being punched in the face and kicked in the nuts
I take punched in the face.
Neither would bother me, unless the person I date is trying to convert me. That being said, if a person supports Trump, that is a sign that we are not on the same wave length. A Trump cultist is a lot different than a real Republican, so he is the exception to the rule. Trump is an anti intellect, anti science, infantile, spoiled, ignorant, unstable baby man, and anyone who admires this disgusting mess, would have nothing in common with me, and we would probably end up as enemies.
Don't hold back, WW, tell us what you really think! LOL
Neither. Not going to happen. I have standards.
Thank you. My thoughts exactly
The mode of thinking is so bizarre with both that it spills over to everything else. Never happen!!
I think the two generally tend to go hand in hand. However, if they are able to separate religion from politics, I’d probably go with opposing political views, provided they could behave like a rational human being and be respectful of other viewpoints. The minute they start talking about how certain minority groups don’t deserve the same rights as the white patriarchy, I’m out, though.
Oy. We're going to have to set some definitions here. I would date a theist, provided that they were a sane and respectful one. It might even be fun, because I still find the concept of religions interesting. I don't think I would be able to handle a conservative or libertarian of any religious stripe. Religious fundies are right out though.
A lot of the time, the two things go hand in hand. If we have opposing religious views, it's almost a given that our political outlook will be somewhat different. If I didn't know about the person's politics, I'd give the opposing religious views a chance, cuz I have done that before and sometimes it works out. If both things are out of whack, it's not worth the time.
Neither. I'd try to introduce them to each other and see how that works out.
If I had to choose, I could deal with opposing religious views more easily. I actually broke up with someone who believed OJ was innocent. I only go so far with the degree if stupid I must deal with. Politics incites heated emotional reactions in people, me. Religion: not so much. (unless inserted in politics)
All religious views would be opposing to someone who doesn’t believe in any kind of god. If it was just a date or two I could cope with it, but a long term relationship I think would be nearly impossible. As far as politics are concerned, yes I think I could live with that as long as we kept off the subject at home.
These days they are the same thing???? I'll pass. I would rather have a root canal ?.
Opposing religious views, no question at all. I'm happy to compromise with a religious person and respect their views if they'll respect mine. I am absolutely not willing to compromise with far right-wingers, and they most certainly won't respect my views so I could not respect theirs even if I didn't find those views abhorrent..
