Just to get things started...…………

I'm currently in the middle of "The Witches" by Stacy Schiff. It deals with the Salem Witch trials of the late 1600's.

In addition to my general interest in the whole Puritan thing, I am a direct blood descendant of Susannah North Martin, who was hung in Salem July 19, 1692. Like a good number of those executed, she was a widow with money and land. That, more than anything else, seems to be one of the prime reasons that these people were put to death.

I read The Witches a few years ago. I thought Schiff did a good job on the subject. That's an interesting note about the widows with money. Our society often is intimidated by independent women.
