One of the problems we face when we allow a group (pick a group) to define the moral high ground in any way, a young woman lost her internship with NASA because of swearing on Twitter in a series of exchanges because of an escalation of the original argument. My response to that is, bullshit. And here's an article that expresses my reason for taking that stance:

Since we have had a number of interesting responses to this, I now include the following:

If you take a high-profile job, especially a government job, and get into stupid arguements with strangers on FB, you probably need to get a tad more judgement...

I second the call of bullshit.

NASA is publicly funded by about half a percent of the US budget and is subject to government oversight. It is also not entirely necessary to exist as its primary function is space exploration. Together this means that public perception of NASA is under constant scrutiny and therefore closely upheld.

My personal opinion is that NASA should be making sure that they are presenting the best possible image to the public and I trust them to know how to do that better than I. They didn't let her go because of a moral implication, they let her go because she publicly told a senior engineer and prominent member of NASA to "suck her dick and balls" on Twitter. There's a difference between trying to enforce your morality or protecting the public image that has direct ties to your budget which impacts everyone at NASA's job.

I have always agreed with this. My ex not as much

Cuss words have been around for a long long time...they are expressive of how you feel about a situation if you are the cussive...lol...I am a reasonably intelligent individual but I still cuss to put a point across...It is not derivative but an everyday usage of language that at least 75% of the worlds population uses in its many varied forms..

No one group gets to define morality.

IME people who try to claim moral high ground are usually huge hypocrites. Moral high ground is something others bestow on honorable people or groups, it takes years to build and can be destroyed quickly. The biggest problem is honorable people will buck the system and then be heavily scrutinized and even criticized without merit.

IF you have something worth saying , say it . If all you can do is spout words that do not advance your view point , you are only attempting to control the conversation , when the truth is , you have nothing to say , but you just want to keep the other person from continuing with an intelligent point of view . You've already admitted , you lost the argument . It is NOT a sign of intelligence . It is a sign of a childishness .

Arguing in the face of the research? 🙂

@evidentialist Do you remember when research proved doctors were recommending cigarets to their patients ? Do you remember when research provided a pill to prevent morning sickness - only babies born after their pregnant mothers used it , were born minus parts , like arms , legs , eyes , genetila , fingers , or toes ? Do you remember research that taught for many illnesses , the proper , "cure," was bloodletting ? "Research ," can and has been ,"influenced ," by the attitude of the researchers . Did you know that in ,"researching," which cigarrets college students preferred , the cigarret companies paying for the research , sent people to the colleges prior to the research teams to hand out packages of cigarrets to all the students . Then when a researcher asked the students what they smoked , if the student didn't have a preference or answered they didn't have a preference , they'd go by whatever brand they had in their pocket . Surprise , surprise . If you look on the internet , you can find someone who has already said whatever you want to read . Believe in space aliens ? Believe in God - him , her , them , or it.? Pick one . You can validate what ever you want .

Strongly disagree. Can't get your point across using words few people understand without looking up...an intellectual realizes this using some common sense. Speak to the lowest common denominator not the average or highest

@maxhyde I doubt I've used any words , the people on this site wouldn't recognize . Nor did I recommend using ,"big ," words . I said instead to use words that actually had a meaning , in relation to the topic at hand . Nice diversionary tactic . But the topic was swear words , not intellectual words .

@Cast1es i wasnt really speaking about your language at all so apologies if you thought it was about you. Just disagreed with your point.
Swearing is used for emphasis because most people notice it. That is all. I do it way more than necessary and don't care if people think I am an idiot with no vocabulary skills. I have always spoken this way and it isn't likely to change. Not caring much about what others think of me is as much a problem as a solution so that kind of just balances itself out.
When necessary I can limit usage but I try not being in that situation. I prefer much more informal discussions and how content is delivered is less important to me than the content itself.
Like breakups, there is probably a better way to put it but the content being delivered and understood is more important than the grace or tact of the delivery...for me. My wife was nearly the polar opposite

True, the punishment didn’t fit the crime but it’s worth noting that the gentleman she told to fuck off didn’t get her fired and is working to help her rectify the situation, so he seems like a fair, understanding man. The problem happened because her friends kept tagging NASA and escalating the situation for her and I’m hoping he succeeds in helping her unring that bell.

That he does. As for NASA's response, it was still unwarranted and even if the situation is rectified, which I hope it is, there will remain a blotch on the record.

@evidentialist I think he specifically mentioned his goal being to make sure it didn’t leave a mark on her record either. I hope he has the power to get that done but as far as I heard it was his earnest intention. I don’t really blame NASA that much either, if I personally hired someone and then saw them being disrespectful to one of my company’s senior members and everyone was tagging my company’s name next to a lot of unsavory/unprofessional comments I’d probably cut bait too, but it’s obviously as unprofessional and reactionary as the comments themselves were, seeing as how it was not a personal matter of attack. This unknown older man shows up and tells her to watch her language when you’re celebrating n full of piss n vinegar n anyone’s gonna tell em where to shove it. Does anyone know if NASA actually has a language policy in place on campuses or any kind of public agreement their employees and interns enter into that binds them to any conduct code officially? If they do have a strict policy that she had supposedly already signed that’s the only time the guy’s admonition would have been slightly warranted/helpful, otherwise it was just a big misunderstanding that he shouldn’t have poked into in the first place. My grandfather worked for Bendix systems contracting as fuel specialists and technicians for NASA during the Apollo program but it was the 70s in Cape Canaveral so I guarantee they didn’t give a fuck n all sounded like dock workers at the time. Anyways, space is cool, science is cool, cursing is cool; mixing them all under committee rule is not.

@Wurlitzer -- I've done some subcontract with them and ... well ... yup.

Actions have consequences. You have a choice of your actions, you do not have a choice of the consequences of your actions. Choose wisely and intelligently. Strive to do or cause no harm.

@jlynn37 -- In this case the punishment does not reflect the crime. If that were the case, Trump would not have come close to a nomination based upon things he says and does and his presence on Twitter. Perhaps you can explain to me what harm is caused or done by telling someone to fuck off or something like it. Enough so that a person's entire future is shot down because someone didn't like what was said.

@evidentialist Your opinion is noted as is mine.

@jlynn37 -- That's fine, but what informs that opinion?

@SamanthaAustin well said...she showed very poor judgement!
