As a cyclist / walker - I have developed a bit of situational awareness (self-preservation) about other cars as I do so. Find that extends even when I am behind the wheel of my own car.

I ride a mountain bike now, but when I drove, I dealt with those fools frequently on my morning commute. I would start slowing down, then resume speed. If they continued after several tries, I would lock my brakes up. No one ever hit me, ( I lived in the country and was ready with a deer crossing the road story) but it seemed to get the message across.

Was parked waiting for a client buying cigarettes at a gas station and was rear ended by an old fart in a metal V-8 who hit reverse instead of forward and gave it more gas when he went backwards. He straightened my spine.

I've never fully recovered from that one.

It depends on how fast traffic is moving and how dense the traffic is. If the traffic is dense and moving slowly,1 car length is okay. If less dense traffic moving more rapidly, 5 car lengthsapart is a safe distance.

I just want to get to my destination on time and safely! You have to watch out for others and drive around the ones that drive slower than the rest of the group

I always get the impression with people that tailgate that they somehow are trying to teach the driver in the front car a lesson. What they really are doing in most cases is just scaring an already nervous driver. I have some truck driver acquaintances that have told me something very important when driving always look a mile ahead so that you never get surprised by an accident construction etc..

Even at a stop sign, or a red light, you should be able to see the rear tires ahead of you make contact with the pavement.

I’m more of a two to three car length person. I’m into saftey. Too many people are shitty drivers.

I recently had to retake the tests, and the Oregon state handbook says it’s the law to slow down when people want to pass you. So I take that to mean that I should slow down whenever anyone gets too close to me from behind. Lol

A rude awakening when I moved to Arizona. I got t-boned by a minister who ran a red light. Saw all kinds of terrible drivers and then found out that you don't have to take driver training to get a license in Arizona. Then it all made sense. In Michigan we had to take driver's ed. of course Arizona is another planet

My ex boyfriend used to complain that I drive like a grandmother. I would reply by asking him how many accidents he's had (I haven't had an accident in over 20yrs and he's had three within a years time). He would immediately get on the defensive and say they all weren't his fault.

Driving is more than just driving. You HAVE to be aware of your surroundings. Defensive driving is just as important as offensive driving.

I drive a school bus more than my car, safety first. Before driving bus, I have not had a ticket or accident in 40 years except for the time I hit a deer.

I agree with you fully as most of my driving is in a work vehicle. I don't understand road rage. What I have is road frustration or maybe "road wonderment." In my personal vehicle recently I'm slowly driving into a Walmart parking area as I eat popcorn. A frustrated young lady leaving the parking area stops her car in front of me and motions with her hand at me through her windshield as if to say "come on, come on." Apparently she thought I'm too slow and should be driving up that lane faster. I think it's funny because there is nothing I am doing that would even be slowing her down. I'm not in her lane and all she had to do was get into her car and go.

Let me guess, German car? BMWs, Audis or VW golfs are the prime culprits on UK roads. Also their indicators don't work. They are non existent or late in changing lanes and in left turns (we drive on the proper side of the road).
I try just tapping my brake a few times. Not enough to slow down but just so as my brake light comes on. If that doesnt work then I slow down and give more distance in front of me. If they overtake then I always leave a greater distance because they will be start/stopping all the time.
I really irks me too and I want a bumper sticker that says "KEEP YOUR DISTANCE - EPILEPTIC DRIVING"

Depends what you drive. I rarely get arseholes gettin in my way. This is one of the tamer looking motors I've had, still working on it. Wobbly Skull going in back window and some graffiti work on the sides. And defense number two, sound. Had car race up behind me while in my armored Ford Transit and as he got within feet, my sound system kicked in with 2000 watts, two big speakers in back, by doors facing out, for use at parties and raves. He must have thought he'd hit me and braked hard and skidded all over the place. LMAO

While working, the company had sent any employee that might need to drive a vehicle to a defensive driving course every five years. I slow down to let others pass me. I give 4-sec space from the vehicle ahead of me. In a parking lot with multiple rows for parking, I will park so I can drive forward out of my parking place rather than back up.

Safety is a priority and I too give a wide berth. Mostly though, I walk, Lyft, bus or train. I live in Philadelphia and do not own a car.

I took a $200 a week pay cut to get a 7 mile (one way) commute instead of a 22 mile commute (in Denver). I save on travel time, gas money, fewer chance of accidents, less wear on tires and car, and the best part is less stress in my life!

I keep 10 car lenghts in front of me at all times.In 63 tears of driving there has been just one accident and that was a woman who drove out in front of me.She was charged with the accident.

If anyone has driven in Houston, it’s a cluster. It’s a massive city.. area wise and population wise. Compared to other large cities where mass transit is a priority, it’s the complete opposite here. There’s no benefit of a few cars length cushion in front of you. Be aware, be safe are my mottos

I leave lots of space between me and the car in front of me. The tailgaters make me angry not least because they are putting me in danger. Because of the space I leave, someone always comes up on the right and tries to turn left in front of me in order to occupy that space. I have them tailgate me even if I am right behind someone in traffic and they flash lights or wave me over as if entitled to my space. Last year I was involved passively in a road rage incident because I didn't pull over and let the guy pass me. I waved him back. He became enraged and pulled next to me and indicated he wanted to fight. I ignored him and he followed me for a while waving his arms and so on, so I called 911 and the local police from two towns tried to find him.
How many times do these morons bust a gut getting in front of me in traffic only to get stuck behind the person I was behind with a line of cars that stretches for miles?
