  1. House

And sgu? Where is sgu?

@Pedrohbds I feel like SGU was trying too hard to capitalize on the dark, gritty tone of Battlestar Galactica, and didn't have a clear idea of how to do it. It wasn't even a bad concept, but the plot seemed overwhelmed with darkness without enough substance to sustain it.

JasonNash, I really enjoyed SG-1, and I'm ambivalent about Atlantis. There were things to like, of course, but I always felt like exploration of Atlantis itself could have been a bigger part of the plot — but maybe that would have fractured the storyline too much. Farscape was great, too — lots of tough questions about philosophy and ethical dilemmas, plenty of action, trippy by times, suspenseful, great character development.

I would have to know the person and be aware of their tastes before I could make such a recommendation.

I assume I am recommending to someone with my exact taste....

  1. Breaking Bad (this is an easy number one, all others in no particular order)
  2. Mad Men
  3. Game of Thrones
  4. The Office(I can see the same stuff over and over and giggle every time!)
  5. Star Trek Next Gen (I want to be as cool as Picard!)

Deep cut bonus
Freaks and Geeks (brilliant show, ahead of its time. Only one season, but I often wonder what happened to Lindsay after following the dead that summer)

Yes.. Picard is highly recommended as a role model. 🙂

I'm sticking to fiction here, so no competition shows, so-called reality programs, no science or how-to shows, etc.

Older shows

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer (comedy, action, drama, romance, all well done, something for everyone, bear with the first season though)
  • Picket Fences (drama, ethics, some humor, very smart)
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation (science fiction, humor, action, ethics, philosophy)

Cartoons

  • Rick and Morty (science fiction, philosophy, comedy)
  • BoJack Horseman (comedy, drama, all the feels)
  • Archer (comedy, action, absurdity)

Recent shows

  • Westworld (science fiction, philosophy, action, suspense)
  • The Good Place (comedy, drama, ethics, loads of fun)
  • Black Mirror (anthology, surreal, philosophical, horror)

Shameless
Lost Girl
Seinfeld
30 Rock
WKRP in Cincinnati

Hah!! Name drop time.. I child minded Anna (Lost Girl) when she was a preteen. It was really odd to watch her as an adult acting.. I wasn't a fan of the show.. found the writing. hmmm.. lacking.. to put it politely. But enjoyed tuning in once in a while to watch Ms. Silk strut her stuff ( and yes Silk is her real name not a stage nom de plume). I haven't seen her in person for many years but she was a real gem of a youngster. I can only imagine she is as giving a person now as she was then🙂

Haven't watched "new" tv series for a while just kind of lost interest with other things to do,... watched a few episodes of Riverdale out of curiosity as to what they would do with the characters.. checked out Black Mirror for the story lines dealing with how Tech is affecting society.

All things considered I think these 5 have some value beyond pure entertainment 🙂

X-Files ( first 4 seasons), The Office, MASH, Reboot (animated), and Schitt's Creek ( Canadian)

1

Blue planet-1&2
PBS-Nova (science);and Frontline(social issues)

My favorites are probably Dexter and IT Crowd. Some that haven't been mentioned very much (from Netflix streaming): Atypical, Wanderlust, Broadchurch, Longmire, Grace and Frankie, Nurse Jackie

0

Twin Peaks, Seinfeld, Night Court, Fernwood Tonight, Barney Miller
