Why Disney's Coco SUCKS

No, not because it glorifies superstitious beliefs. In fact, the afterlife theme can be interpreted in an very atheist way: We can live on after our passing if we are treasured memories of the living.

SPOILERS in reasons on why Coco is a poor story below.

1: Bad story structure
On the surface, it appears that Coco does follow the Campbell Hero's journey, however, the hero Miguel does NOT grow. All that happens is Miguel learns some facts, but his passion and direction does not change. Miguel SHOULD NOT be the hero of the story, rather, the direct family members of Coco herself should be the protagonists because it is them who had to grow and go on a journey to discover their faults and overcome the central conflict.

Speaking of which,

2: Stupid and Annoying Conflict
Coco's family ARE TOTAL ASSHOLES. If they were not so petty and demonized Coco's father and his music, the story's main conflicts will not exist, Coco would not be suffering from Alzheimer's, the central injustice would have been exposed, and Miguel would be able to live his passion from the start.
Seriously, these people are the worst! They condemned their own family for two generations and created so much suffering, WHICH THEY CAN WITNESS. And because Coco's immediate family was not the story protagonists, they were not given a decent arc, and they still feel un redeemed at the end of the story, leaving much dissatisfaction.

3: Cheap Disney twist
Okay I get it, Prince Hans is the bad guy, everything that happens in The Last Jedi is a shallow twist, so why expect any different from Coco? Because IT IS BAD WRITING and should not be the backbone of any story. The problem with the story twists in Coco is it appears that the story itself is built around the twist like a cheap daytime soap or lousy YA novel. The result is major plotholes, the unlikely and un relate-able conflict, and serious eye rolling when the twist is revealed.

My solution: The story should have been focused on Coco's mother, who had to team up with her estranged husband to rescue their great great grand son who has stumbled into the spirit world on the day of the dead. To return Miguel to the living world, they need to obtain the blessing of the villain, which would be difficult and dramatic.

But nooooooo, Disney must make a child the Hero, and make him a Mary Sue, because that makes kids love the movie.

And yet, oddly enough, I still enjoyed it. "De gustibus non est disputandum."

yeah there are many aspects of movie that can be enjoyed. but the story depth and quality is a far cry from pixar's golden age
