Had a discussion about science and faith with one of my students the other day. Pretty much said faith has no place in science. The latter is based on tangible evidence, the former is based on presupposition, hope, and many emotions circulating the fear of death. She’s pretty deep, but she may need some convincing. I remained agnostic on the question of a benevolent being behind things, definitely not taking a firm stance on the absurdity of belief in belief.

it is true that faith has no place in science. whether it has a place outside of science, in one's personal, inner life, is the subject of much debate. it has no place in mine, and i do tend to see people of faith as ridiculous, not as people, not as a whole, necessarily, but in that one aspect. but in science? science requires not only proof but an active attempt to disprove theories.
