What about divorce?

As a partial transmale, androgyne, demisexual person, I just don't care if people are into polygamy.

I don't seem capable of jealousy, used to think threesomes would be great, as long as someone with whom I was previously bonded was involved.

I also seem to be amoral..seeing sex as a body function. No big deal.

However, I do know that most cis, hetero females are VERY territorial and would never share their spouses.

I don't have a problem with it, but I can't get/keep one partner, so small steps.

Lol

Ditto!

yep

As long as all participants are willing adults, it shouldn't be anyone else's business.

If two, or three, or four+ people are in a happy relationship with full knowledge of the other partner(s), more power to them.

It's alright with me as long as you also allow women to have more than one man around the house, too.

@irascible Actually the term for that is polyandry.

No way, no how!

I have trouble handling one woman. What kind of insanity would cause me to want two?

3

I have no issue with it

If all parties are autonomous and freely entering the arrangement, then OK.

But I don't think that's what's happening in the FLDS church. Little girls are raised to believe that they MUST marry whoever the "prophet" chooses for them. They don't have a say. And one might think, "they could just refuse, leave the church, run away." But can they really? They are imprisoned by their beliefs and cultures. They are taught that leaving would doom their soul for eternity. Is that really freedom? Is polygamy for FLDS girls really entered into freely?

It's not for me, but I agree, "if all parties are autonomous..."

I see nothing intrinsically wrong with polygamy, what negative stigmas that are attached to it are, frankly, cultural. Where it is culturally acceptable it appears to work just fine. Conversely, where it is deemed unacceptable, infidelity is endemic, suggesting that for a sizable proportion of the population, monogamy is at best, an unrealistic expectation. Obviously polygamy isn't, and shouldn't be, for everyone, yet I am uncomfortable with the idea that such an important, personal life choice should be imposed upon people who would, by people who would not.

Sounds to complicated to me !

It's not my cup of tea and I don't know enough about the dynamics to make an informed comment.

Mark Twain said that he went to Utah in the 1835, to specifically argue the then Mormon practice of Polygamy. He said (paraphrasing) that after a few weeks there, all the polygamous women he met were so unattractive , he was inclined to give all their husbands a reward. His wording was much more .. umm, eloquent [deseretnews.com] Of course, in the 1800's, there was no social security, welfare services etc, so any single woman ( and there were plenty of widows) was at the mercy of society in a big way. At least the Mormons didn't ostracise or mistreat unmarried women like [dailymail.co.uk]

Origami is pretty neat...oh, polygamy....I had a lawyer friend go through the reasons why polygamy is such a problem...we don't have a legal system that weighs the rights of multiple partners...so can a second wife sue the first wife for custody of the a child the first wife gave birth to? Things like that is where polygamy becomes a problem, whether it is consensual or not...personally, it is up to the people what type of life they want to live...but if they aren't protected by the law, that does become a problem.

Why is it always one male and multiple females - many of them under-age? Here's a thought experiment: What if the world all of a sudden became matriarchal, and men were subservient to women. Would society be different?

(I may make this a separate thread if encouraged...)

I know of a woman living in polygamy with two men. Works for them. (not religious motivation).

I'll take 2

Legalise it for consenting adults.

Monogamy is there to avert violence. If polygamy is allowed then some males no longer have access to sex and as a result conflict will ensue. Waring cultures use polygamy because they expect many of the males to go off and die and the promise of multiple wives makes the offer tempting. Even if you're one of those "free love" people and you believe in sharing partners then you must account for people who are innately disgusted with sharing wives and you must understand that there is a ver strong evolutionary reason we have that feeling of disgust built into us. It is to prevent disease.

I'm not certain humans (especially the male species) are naturally monogamous.

@Alicia_J There definitely is a pressure for them not to be monogamous but as a policy to avert violence we have chosen monogamy and produced civilisation from it. one argument I've heard from polygamists is that it was widely accepted in the tribes before the roman conquests but its pretty clear that they were violent and there was enough infighting to prevent real progress being made

Monogamy doesn't actually seem successful at preventing violence, IMHO.

Monogamy is more likely derived from selfish genetics, EG keeping your own offspring healthy and successful and not those of competing males.

We don't need to bow to evolutionary or social pressures; we can use reason instead.

@arnies "we can use reason instead" is how people end up supporting eugenics programs, careful where you tread man, replacing sexual selection with reason has taken people to many dark places.

@Gabriel I simply mean selecting your mate or mates using your own ability to reason.

@arnies Read kant, my dude (or don't bother and just watch youtube people talk about him)

@Gabriel Making the step from selecting my own mate to eugenics is quite the leap, wouldn't you say?

I studied philosophy in school, and I enjoyed it. However, philosophy and philosophers often make things sound reasonable when a reasonable person would find otherwise.

Also, listening to people talk philosophy on youtube might be useful if you actually know the works being talked about; it is today's soapbox and while useful for some things, it can lead you astray.

I was talking about domestic violence in monogamous relationships, and the freedom to choose my own mate.

Not the government, nor the church, or even my peers.

I am open minded

"Polygamy: the practice or custom of having more than one wife or husband at the same time.". A lot of folk are presuming this is only a male, female plus female proposition. It's not. This does work for some people but they have to "Work the relationship" and I think I just quoted Anita Blake. (a fictional character).

Free Will. I know the case of my Bi daughter living with her BF and GF together. At the end... boy was odd man out. I had done some crazy things in the past but all among adults. I can't let her mother know because then my daughter's behavior will be seen as purely my genes. Not that there was anything wrong but... like me... she been greedy. The key to me is to understand it is not going to last forever. It is just one more experience to enjoy and endure. FREE WILL. "Greed is Good"... not everyone can handle their greed. For those that can and act upon it... I Salute You. Feels good isn't it?

If it rocks the boat of all involved, why not?

But polygamy, understood by all and enjoyed by all, is very different from deception.

If EVERYONE INVOLVED is happy, yes - but don't use polygamy as an excuse to 'play around' if your partner believes you are monogamous, and that was the basis of your relationship with them.

Polygamy, traditionally in our country, as practiced by Mormons, is one man with multiple wives. Polyamory is very different. It could be four women living in the same house all in a romantic relationship with each other and no men. There are multiple combinations of how a polyamorous relationship would work. And yes, you are right, in polyamory, there is not supposed to be any sneaking and deception involved.

I am happily in a long term relationship with a woman (20+ years with children) and have been very open to also finding my male "beloved." I am bi and she is very supportive and not prone to jealousy. I know very few poly folk and would like to meet more people successfully navigating a triad. Integrity, honesty, and respect are key... its the logistics that i wonder about.
