I’ve tried internet dating on and off for 7 years with limited success. I have found people to be very materialistic and always looking out for a better offer.

I’ve always felt like a bit of a round peg in a world of square holes and have generally sought out people of similar age and interests who would openly identify as left of centre, and still Ive had the same results. My faith in these platforms and people in general is dwindling, despite my general optimism.

Does this resonate with anyone else?

I'm best f2f. Online is horrible!

Online dating has yet to work for me, but I cling to the idea because I'd rather someone get to know me before having to look at me.

That’s fair. I am on here because I lead such a busy lifestyle I rarely get in to social situations. I’m happy to meet F2F and am generally a gregarious person but I live over 90mins away from my home town and have a child who is dependant so my options become limited. All the best though with your journey ?

Yes indeed. The difference is, for me, on previous sites, conversation started & within 24 to 72 hours demands were being made for my phone number or for some type of sexual encounter online or IRL or dude ranger was knitting booties & trying to buy a dog.

I can count on 1 hand, with fingers left over, the # of times this did not happen.

Fortunately, on this site, things tend to be very different. Great conversation, realist expectations, I'm just put out that everyone is so far way.

I hear you there. No one I can see is anywhere near me and if they are they have not been active for months. I guess I will have to be patient, not that I’ve ever been impatient ?

@Julesjah I keep thinking I should visit Australia, then I remember you've got spiders so big they hunt birds.

@SallyInStitches And that’s the thin edge of the wedge. We have the most venomous snakes in the world and the most Veneto is, jellyfish(most toxic animal on the planet), octopus, sea snakes, and Stone Fish, Cone Shells and then there are the Salt Water Crocodiles and the Sharks...it’s a wonder we Aussie’s make it to puberty ?

Not really--I've had really good luck here & it's the only one I've tried. One thing though, the guys were not people who I'd look at their profiles & think I had much in common with them. But after talking for a few days I was surprised how many values & interests we shared. They also happened to be a lot younger than I am, so maybe you could consider people outside you own age range?

I sure understand about the materialism. Wonder if you can include (or exclude?) something in your profile to weed those people out & send them looking elsewhere before bothering you? I even consider being overly concerned with how someone looks a form or materialism & it's one of the reasons I don't have a photo in my profile. I'd rather they contact me because they're interested in something they read on my profile, or think we might be compatible emotionally. If they ask to see a picture I'm happy to share one or two.

I hope you meet someone nice here! Good luck!

Hey thank Carin, great advice. I do however believe in being seen. Regardless of how immaterial we are we are always attracted visually to people. I have many female friends, older and younger who I have friendships with but there is no sexual attraction with. I also believe that in most, but not all cases, visual attraction is almost instantaneous. I was a chef once an an old adage still is true to me beyond the realms of food and that’s that we eat with our eyes first, and after all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so what so I think is beautiful will most likely not be the same definition as everyone’s else.
All the best. J
