At about the same time as I discovered this site I closed my Facebook account. The main reason for that was that I was on Facebook under my real name and had been "found" by a number of people that I used to know years ago. I accepted their "friend" requests because I didn't want to seem rude. However I didn't want to stay in touch with them, either - I don't share their interests or obsessions. So then I opened a new Facebook account under a false (humorous) name, thinking that it might be useful for communicating with people I wanted to be in contact with (as opposed to feeling obliged to). Anybody else have a similar dilemma? Do you still find any use for Facebook?

Same here.

I have had no problem using my real name anywhere. I didn't use it here because I didn't think when I filled out the information and thus became 'evidentialist'.

6

I actually have two accounts. One with my maiden name, one with my married( now divorced) name. So I keep my close friends separate from my relatives... especially the religious ones, teehee!

5

You can put those people on IGNORE.

It helps me because I don't feel obligated to reply when a post about how "people don't understand the Bible".

I've done my time trying to "rescue" the brainwashed.

I just use facebook for the messenger app and to find quality memes.

But I like this site because I can be anonymous. For people like me who like to discuss controversial philosophies and issues, it's easy to become a target for political extremists and uncivilized provocateurs.

Yeah, I can see wanting to remain anonymous. I was in an abortion debate group on Yahoo and this crazy old prolife lady put quite a bit of time and effort into finding out my identity and posting it. I thought she was going to try to mess with my medical practice, but she didn't. After that I figured they'd find me anyway so I just use my real name.

less but I still have people I like to be in touch with there

I have a real love/hate relationship with facebook. It is a great way to keep up with people and find out about local events, but it creeps me out that if I Google something or search it on Amazon it suddenly starts showing up in my facebook feed. Ya know, that whole big brother dystopian nightmare scenario. There are a lot of sources I follow, but have been going directly to their sites instead and getting out of facebook more and more. Weaning...

I use facebook for keeping in touch with friends who are scattered all over the world. I don't really care if people 'find' me. I find it's a good way to keep up with what friends are doing, without having to write emails, etc. The only peeve I have is men I don't know anything about (some, it turns out, have been fundamentalists) using it as a dating site and "friend" requesting me, only to start messaging me with unsolicited sexual messages.

3

I use FB mainly for Messenger and phone calls. Once in awhile, I do look at content, but most is just political crap now.

3

I mostly use it to keep tabs and use the messenger with my kids. Also joined some private groups that I use, like this one only not as nice.. I like it to keep tabs on people and be able to reach out, but rarely do. I've unfollowed many people who's comments I don't care to see and adjusted my chat so most peole can't see when I am active. There are a few I wish weren't on my list but they generally don't bother me.

I have been spending less and less time on Facebook. I only use it because some people and organizations I care about use it for communication. The conversations here have been far more enjoyable. Except for the one Badger who was butt hurt over a past relationship and kept pestering people with responses that had nothing to do with those people's posts.

Badgers. Spiteful little bastards.

Gotta watch out for those damn, dirty Lil Badgers.
Haha

My fb is usually private. I use it to get pictures of the g'son who lives elsewhere. I use messenger way more often and message my kids daily.

3

I only use FB for contact with my family.

I've changed mine 3 times. lol

I have gotten away from caring to talk to many on fb, I mainly use fb and Instagram to keep in touch and up to date with musicians. I still interact with others on it and have thousands of pics saved there. I don’t think I will delete it, however the conversation is not as stimulating as it is here. Still, here I don’t want to junk it up with endless memes or whatever else you may find there. Maybe a couple here and there lol

I'm on FB under my maiden and married name, I keep in touch with some HS friends and some of my political groups. I have friends from when I was a church member and either they accept me and ignore my postings, or they're ignoring me. I don't care. I am who I am and I am out there. I have a game on FB I'm kind of addicted to, but i spend far less time on there now. If this site ever puts up an addictive game I will have to quit my day job.

I did away with facebook... no other names used. People are nuts on Facebook. I got a sister from hell and distant family that can go to hell.

It was my last High School reunion that brought in a ton of folks I didn't really want on my FB page, But felt obligated to allow in. (Duh - live and learn). As I've discovered whether they changed or not - I've either blocked or not.
I don't mind people holding opposing views to my own. But if they're rude to others? That's it. I just won't tolerate it. And they are going to know who I am by my posts - so they have that option to block me.
I had a former classmate all up in my face about "How can you hold that view? You grew up like I did!" (Small town and Roman Catholic). Well I went off and learned new things - and I was never a small minded bigot to begin with. I still read her posts with my mouth hanging open in disbelief - but I think knowing that there are people with such opposing views - despite similar upbringings - is a good reality check.
That being said when FB gets on my nerves? I head here!

I use FB all the time - I live on it. It combines 90% of my personal communications with about 10% of my work communications and allows me to network with entomologists across the world. The Groups are particularly powerful as they allow disparate communities of individuals to come together to inspire and help each other. I admin about 15 groups and contribute to a lot more, helping to mentor people on identification of insects etc.

1

I used to add them just in case they had changed then deleted them when they hadn’t or if they just simply didn’t interact with me . Have also ignored friend requests from people I don’t like the way I see if is I’m probably not gonna see them in real life do why worry

1

These days I use it mostly for my work folks. Some messenger. I post nothing of me there. All of who I am here.

As for me, I'm a closeted atheist, I can't really express my opinions or thoughts [related to religion] on my main account so I created a dummy account and joined a group of atheist/agnostic on FB to interact with fellow atheist and to learn more and share what I know, but most of the time I just read the posts and comments. Sometimes it feels weird logging in on my main account.

1

facebook I like only because I have a network of amazing people with shared experiences that go back 28 years. It is a way to stay connected with these people that help me move forward in life. Agnostic is a new way to add and build upon that, although I do not have that real face to face experience with anyone here, and my experience with my FB community happened way before social media obviously. I see it as Pros in both columns .

1

I still use it. But the people on day Facebook are people that do share common interests with me.

1

I have 3 Facebook's because I hate deleting large quantities of people. Too much effort. I also use aliases because I don't want stalkers.
