Even though I am Agnostic, I still feel the emotion of the Jewish community in light of this senseless shooting.

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.Years ago I discovered the cultural Jewish group at a Brights 4th of July picnic. At first I was confused but then was happy such a group existed. I heard that since the Jewish community stuck to itself over the Millennia it has become a separate tribe with the religious part only being one small section. My question is so what happens when a member gets together with a non-Jew. Doesn't that water down the cultural mores?

Same here. I took over the Jewish by Culture Group because many of us here see being Jewish as a cultural thing. We like some of the foods, music and non-religious celebration and mourning.

Well of course! First & foremost they are human beings. This week has been very upsetting, hasn't it? I feel more hopeless than ever.

i know we eschew religion, but i need nonetheless to point out that the pittsburgh muslim community has raised money for the families of the victims and offered to stand guard at the synagogue during services to protect the survivors from future attacks. we may not believe what they believe -- we may even think what they believe is silly -- but we cannot in good conscience tar muslims as a terrorist religion, or muslims as terrorists. there are terrorists who use the religion as an excuse, just as today's american christians so often do, but whatever the religions' problems are, that's not one of them. i almost cried when i saw the offer of protection. they called their jewish neighbors "family." it is easy to feel hopeless; i feel it a lot. but this gives us hope. it's not huge but it's something!
