i guess i've always been of the true drop-out generation & will remain that: never into striving for a career, keeping a job, accumulating material wealth. it shows, or rather: i've nothing to show for it ? but a flexible, open mind & an empathic & rebellious heart. what more could i have asked for in life?

Yes, some who the FSM caused me to change from a school mathematics teacher to a database programmer. I have also contributed to the open source software area.

Never had a calling. Or else I ignored it.

You may or may not find something that you really like to do, but a "calling" requires a Caller and a callee. If there is no personal God (even if there is a God or god) calling you to do one specific thing in life, there is no such thing as a calling. Not only that, but historically, a calling only referred to a "calling to the priesthood." Earlier than that it referred to a calling to discipleship. (Remember the scripture "Many are called, but few are chosen.) Then over the years it gradually transmuted into "one's calling in life."

Yes, my calling is to understand reality: psychologically, culturally, environmentally and physically. Coincidentally, the information is useful for finding a job.

I agree. Mostly. I think that the idea of "calling" is problematic because it diminishes the joy of everyday work. I think as a human, it is possible to find some amount of enjoyment in every productive activity, however menial or trivial.

But unfortunately, our profit-driven, competitive economy intensifies them so that they become soul-sucking. And the resulting value system tends to look down upon certain type of work, and we are told that it defines us, not the other way around.

I am lucky in that I totally enjoy what I do for a living. I just want to be able to do less of it though. 🙂 Because no matter how much you enjoy a thing, when it becomes too much, it becomes, well, work. 🙂

Couldn't agree more.

And then there is this.

Yes. It's not a terrible thing to not have a "calling." There's work I like enough that I can do it, and there are other things I love to do that I may or may not get paid to do. Saying you must have a calling is like saying, "I have to be special or I'm nothing" -- which is ridiculous.
