Would you say being an Athesit is a position you can really stand your ground on?

? ?

yes

@Johntnix2 - Poking fun, that if you "Athe[]sit" you may still "[]stand" on your position.

I have also renounced Christianity but I am a non-atheist. To each his own, and welcome.

Welcome to the asylum. Enjoy your stay.

Congratulations on embracing logic and reason over superstition and delusion.

Wow. I don't think I've ever formally renounced my Catholicism. I think I sidled my way out of it, is more accurate.

Congratulations, especially if you transitioned directly to atheism without the half way house of agnosticism along the way.

Be sure to place your soul in that jar by the door. (Thanks)

Not fond of the term "atheism" as Atheist is not really an "ism". ism is defined as "a distinctive practice, system, or philosophy, typically a political ideology or an artistic movement." Not accepting the faith (belief without evidence) assertion that a god exists hardly qualifies as an ism.

Thats the best concise argument for why not to use the label atheist Ive ever heard. Usually people are just mistakenly denying it because they interpret it as too definite of a declaration, representing positivity that there is no higher power possible.

Im a very literal interpreter of etymology so I see it as without theism; the -ism in the word doesnt apply to me, because the self contained meaning of the word is that Im rejecting theism, and that word is the only reason an ism appears. So its sort of a self referencial, meta problem, but it would be helpful if there were a word for "lack of isms" altogether lol.

@Wurlitzer This observation was inspired from a talk given by Matt Dillahunty.

that is a very limited definition of "-ism." dictionary dot com widens it: 'a suffix appearing in loanwords from Greek, where it was used to form action nouns from verbs ( baptism ); on this model, used as a productive suffix in the formation of nouns denoting action or practice, state or condition, principles, doctrines, a usage or characteristic, devotion or adherence, etc. ( criticism; barbarism; Darwinism; despotism; plagiarism; realism; witticism; intellectualism )." i think atheism is, going by that, a perfectly fine ism, and if i have to label myself with regard to my disbelief in any gods, that is the label i choose.
