Magnus Carlsen of Norway retains the World Champion title in chess! He just beat Fabiano Caruana of the USA in rapid play to hold onto it. (They'd completely drawn the classical matches, all 12 of them.)

Just thinking of playing chess makes my head hurt.

I understand. For me, it's relaxing. I used it on college as a way to force myself to be able to focus. It helped so much that I graduated, which I'd argue I probably wouldn't have without it. But that's just experience, definitely not everyone's!

@PolyWolf I rather enjoy chess but there is so much thinking to do and these days I just want to chill most of the time.

12 draws! I'm glad I didn't follow the matches closely!

Don't let the result fool you. Both players had very real chances of sealing at least one victory throughout the game. Chess is not so much about the result as it is about individual pieces of brilliancy.

So close and yet so far.

I'm glad to see someone else is also interested in chess here.

Yes, Magnus was the deserved champion, imo. Maybe a little less dominant compared to two years ago, but he showed amazing calculation and intuition skills throughout the competition (especially in today's tie-breaks). Shout out to Fabi for his amazing fighting spirit as well.

Agreed! I missed the first two games today but saw some of the analysis on the chess.com stream on Twitch. Saw the third game, Magnus found some crazy moves, like when he played Qd6 I think it was toward the endish, when his knight was on d7. Just fantastic.

Fabi did play pretty well, and no matter what anyone says, the Rossolimo will forever be more interesting to me than the Italian game (which, if I recall, is primarily what Karjakin went into).

@PolyWolf Oh, you should definitely check out the first two games. Move 38 in the first match (Re7+) was what won the game for Magnus. Winning a tempo and preventing black's king to get into f3. Such an extraordinary move to find in a rapid game.

@Darius77 I definitely will, thanks!
