What transformed me to becoming nonreligious was distinguishing between myth and reality.

I have considered the pros and cons of life without religion.

Pros:

  1. No guilt about things outside of your control. Look at the neighbor’s wife and think she’s hot? God damns you to hell … or not because you realize that biologically, we men often find women attractive, even if we’re not married to them. It’s not a sin. Just try to keep your eyes to yourself, but seriously, you’re not going to hell.
  2. You can feel really great about all sorts of things that your church will tell you to feel bad about. Get invited to a gay wedding? Go and have a great time without fear of lightning smiting you. Want to have a beer? Have a responsible time drinking that beer because God literally doesn’t care. Not interested in children right now? Contraception is your friend.
  3. Sunday mornings (or Saturdays, or Fridays, or whatever) are all yours.
  4. Tithing? Yeah, no. Investing and donating to charity
  5. You can be friends (no, really) with members of other faiths. EVERYONE is a member of another faith (except the non-believers!)
  6. Science is something you can go along with or be skeptical about. Either way you’re OK. But if a new fossil suggests that humans are more than 6,000 years old, you don’t have to feel guilty for thinking it’s real.
    Cons:
  7. Your friends and family might not want to associate with you if they’re very devout.
  8. Lots of people will tell you how wrong you are, how you’re missing out, and how you just need to go to their church/temple/mosque and you’ll see the light.
  9. Running for public office is kinda hard - people still really distrust the non-religious.
There are many others, but these are the ones that come to mind. All in all, I really enjoy not having a religion. I don’t have any existential crises or doubts. I just live my life, try to be a good person, and let other people worry about metaphysical mumbo-jumbo.
