I am horrified by these pageants. I think they sexualize children in a really disgraceful way. If you remember the Jon Binet Ramsey murder, when they showed photos of her without the makeup she wore in pageants, she was unrecognizable. I have no evidence, but it worries me that they encourage potential molesters to see the girls as fair game.

While I was putting a post together I like to include a picture. I did a browse of children beauty pageants and found the particular picture above among others. Of course for effect I selected the most provocative picture. Digging into the tag line of the picture this particular picture apparently involved...........wait for it..........padding the upper parts of their bathing suits.

Not much. Tends toward immoral and child abuse. Instills a false set of values and unrealistic expectations in these young girls.

I think you are going to find a mix of answers depending on where people are from...I don't like that they sexualize young girls with the make-up, hair, flippers, etc. But, I have also seen these young girls gain confidence and social skills and get involved more in their community in the South...

That being said, there are better ways to do this than a beauty pageant...so, I am going to say that I disapprove of them in general and I really disapprove of making tv shows promoting this.

Child abuse

I think they are a very Southern thing. They send a terrible message to young girls that their entire self worth is wrapped up in their appearance. They sexualize children and cost families who cannot necessarily afford it hundreds of thousands of dollars for dresses, travel, etc.
